This work is a short waltz, written with the intent of sounding both pretty and soothing.As crazy as it may seem, inspiration for this piece came from its composer being passionately kissed by a girl at the cast party for a stage show, which he was in the cast of. She happened to be wearing blue face-paint at the time, and at one point, with her finger, she smeared some of it onto his face, leaving a faint blue stripe. He used music for his ambitions to better himself, including composing a waltz in exchange for a pair of shoes.He moved to Mexico City and soon became a well known musician and composer. At age 12 he was playing violin in one of the city's most popular dance bands. In his early teens, he worked accompanying well known singer Angela Peralta. Although he applied twice for entrance to the National Music Conservatory and briefly studied there, he was mostly self taught.Rosas led a large orchestra and a brass band that toured internationally.Rosas's best known work is Sobre las Olas or Over the Waves. This classic waltz has often been mistakenly thought by many to be Viennese, and frequently attributed to Johann Strauss II. It was first published by Rosas in 1884 when he was in New Orleans, Louisiana with the popular Mexican band at the World Cotton Centennial World's Fair. (It was later republished in Mexico and Europe in 1888, and 1891; these later years are sometimes incorrectly given as the piece's first publication date.) Rosas died in Surgidero de Batabanó, Cuba. Published by Thomas Oboe Lee (A0.869862). Dmitri Shostakovich wrote 15 string quartets. As a tribute to him and his glorious music, my 15th string quartet is dedicated to his memory. The first movement takes on a theme that Dmitri Shostakovich has used many times in his music, especially in his String Quartet No. 8 - the DSCH theme. Bach actually came up with the idea. In his Art of the Fugue, the letters in his name Bach is translated to the musical notes: Bb, A, C and B-natural. Dmitri did the same, but in his case the notes are D, Eb, C and B. My first movement begins with the 2nd violin playing an inversion of the DSCH theme: Eb, D, B and C. Then the 1st violin enters with the original DSCH, which is eventually followed by the viola playing the same DSCH theme, but submerged in a fog of harmony. The cello plays a pedal D … for Dimitri. The idea for the second movement Serenade came from his SQ15, second movement, where the 2nd violin and the viola play a fortissimo quadruple stop pizzicati. I coopted his 8-note chord but used only 6 of them for the ostinato pattern in my movement. Incidentally, the publisher forgot to add an alto clef for the viola part … The third movement in the Nocturne is a Largo in 5/4 that features the cello and the 1st violin. It has nothing to do with DSCH’s music, except for the title. The fourth movement is Intermezzo. Both this title and the previous Nocturne are from his SQ15. But the motivic idea is actually something I stole from his SQ4, third movement. In his case it is a repeated C and G in the 2nd violin and viola in 4/4 meter. I kept the repeated G in the 2nd violin, but I altered the viola part and changed the meter to 3/4. It doesn’t sound like DSCH at all. The fifth movement theme is also an idea I grabbed from his SQ4, second movement: A dyad of F and Ab in 3/4, repeated, in an andante movement. I used the same dyad, F and Ab, but slowed it down to a 6/4 and titled it Trauer-Marsch as DSCH did for the fifth movement of his SQ15. The idea for my sixth movement is stolen from DSCH’s SQ2, third movement, which is titled Valse. The 2nd violin and viola play a persistent pah-pah of the usual Oom-pah-pah of a fast waltz. That is what I used (not an uncommon device in all waltzes), but I altered the top line to something more interesting that just repeating the same notes. His waltz begins in Eb minor, but mine is in the relative major of Gb. The last movement is the Epilogue, as it is in DSCH’s SQ15. The only thing I borrowed from his epilogue is the opening chord of an Eb minor triad. The music that follows has nothing to do with DSCH. Mine is a slow, evolving set of chord progressions that sounds like a dirge: gliding through the waters on a gondola in the canals of Venice on its way to Isola di San Michele.

Tchaikovsky's Serenade for Strings in C Major was written with an ear towards one of his idols, a certain 18th century composer by the name of Mozart. The title and structure of the piece are taken from the serenades of the latter, though this is certainly Tchaikovsky's own particularly 19th century rendering of these older ideas. That it is a masterful work, is demonstrated by the fact that it still remains among the most performed and appreciated by the public alongside the serenades by AntonÃn Dvořák and Josef Suk. The second movement is a gracious waltz that updates the requisite dance movement (which in Mozart's time would have been a stately minuet) to a more contemporary dance form. In any case, the waltz is almost deceptively complex. The harmonic shifts are numerous and often sudden and always deftly crafted. The texture is somewhat of a departure from the previous movement in that there is a discernible lightness of touch in the waltz. This arrangement for string quartet (Violin I, Violin II, Viola, Cello) reflects faithfully the original and is suitable for classroom, repertoire and recital.

The Funk Scherzo movement is a dissertation on pentatonic subsets: major seconds, minor thirds and perfect fourths. The Bossa nova movement, although not pentatonic melodically, is full of chords derived pentatonically: chords stacked in fourths, for example. The last movement, Perpetuo moto, is most definitely pentatonic in its theme: an incessant repeating figure with explosive pentatonic flurries of major seconds, minor thirds and perfect fourths.In between the four movements I have inserted three interludes. Interlude I is an interlocking pair of waltzing pentatonic melodies for two violins. Interlude II is a solemn march on an Fâ€sharp pedal. Interlude III is a quasiâ€canonic descending scale that resolves into a big Gâ€flat major chord. It is my intention that these interludes provide a smooth and slithery connection from one movement into the next. Enjoy!!!The work is dedicated to Miles Davis. His 1963 LP/CD Seven Steps To Heaven is a seminal recording for all music lovers. It made a huge impression on me when I was a teenager in São Paulo, Brazil. I must have listened to it a thousand times. I know every solo by heart. Heaven is Miles’ domain.

Lanner, along with his colleague (and later rival) Johann Strauss the Elder, led the first great flowering of dance music specialist composers in Vienna. This wonderful curiosity is Lanner's homage to Mozart, setting some of his most famous opera melodies in waltz time, introduced by a medley of other Mozart opera hits. The finale, a waltz rendition of the overture to Die Zauberflöte, is not to be missed! The 3rd waltz includes a section where Lanner, a brilliant violinist, wrote out what sounds like the sort of improvisation he would have made in performance.
