The Piano Trio in C minor Op.143 was published by Schott in 1826, but could have been composed much earlier for Ries's personal use in the London concert halls. It is an imposing work, whose gruff tone and serious purpose recall Beethoven's use of this key. The first movement is an impressive sonata-form movement extending to a length of almost 250 bars. It contains two strikingly contrasted themes, one aggressively assertive, the other of a more lyrical, tender character (parallels to Beethoven's thematic tendencies in sonata-form movements are once again clearly apparent). The Adagio movement, cast in the rich colours of A flat major (the tonic minor - flat submediant major key relationship recalls Beethoven once again) contains some moments of real beauty and musical insight. The piano is often centrestage, its florid lines and ornamental flourishes reminiscent of another of Ries's contemporaries, Hummel. The technique of connected second and third movements seen in this work is not new but was a trend established in the piano trio genre by Joseph Haydn in the 1780s and 90s. The oasis of calm and tranquillity created in the Adagio is shattered dramatically by the jagged arpeggio figure which launches the finale. This extremely fast movement - the metronome marking indicates that the music should be felt in two, not in four - is characterised by the tarantella topos. It is a tremendously exciting movement, whose swirling energy and frantic pace is only reined in at the final cadence. The present edition reproduces as faithfully as possible the text of the trio as transmitted in Schott's 1826 edition of the work, a copy of which is preserved in the Staatsbibliothek in Berlin. The metronome markings at the head of each movement derive from this source. The piano compass extends from E flat 1 to a flat 4, a range of just over six octaves. Pedal markings indicated in the source have not been included in the current edition since these are generally very instrument-dependent. Minor rhythmic inconsistences between different statements of the same theme have been retained (e.g. first movement, second subject, bb.51-52, cello and 188-89, violin), as have some differences in phrasing between successive thematic statements (cf. finale, piano bb.3-6 and violin bb.18-21). The style and notation of articulation and dynamic markings have been standardised throughout, and, where missing from the print, markings have been reconstructed from parallel passages. These are indicated by the use of dotted slurs or brackets where appropriate. The Piano Trio in E flat, Op.2 was published by Simrock in 1807 with a dedication to Monsieur le Comte de Browne, Brigadeur au Service de S.M.J. de toutes les Russies. It is a generously proportioned work in the usual three movements. The lengthy sonata-from first movement is prefaced by a slow introduction which begins on dominant seventh harmony (a nod perhaps to Beethoven's first symphony), slowly finding its way to the tonic by the start of the Allegro section. The brief development section modulates widely, including references to keys as distant as E minor and C major, while the substantially rewritten and varied recapitulation touches on both B and G majors. The slow movement, Andante un poco Allegretto , is cast in the key of C minor and features many solos and duets for the string instruments as well as further harmonic interest, especially in the central modulating episode from bar 46. The finale is a sonata-rondo design complete with all the usual tricks, including even a remote transposition of the refrain late in the movement to B major, a technique surely learned from Beethoven. The present edition reproduces as faithfully as possible the text of the trio as transmitted in Simrock's edition of the work, a copy of which is preserved in the Staatsbibliothek in Berlin. The piano part is most successfully realised on an instrument extending as far as c4, although since such instruments were by no means standard in the first decade of the 19th century, Ries has notated the part carefully to cater for instruments without an extended treble compass. Any alternative readings have been incorporated into the current edition exactly as they appear in the Simrock print. In an instance such as bars 298-309 of the finale for example, instruments with the extended compass should follow the small print in bars 298 and 309, and in between read the notes an octave higher according to the composer's 8ve marking. Instruments with a limited compass should play the notes as written, without the octave transposition of bars 299-309. The cello part contains several passages written in the treble clef. Evidence that these should sound an octave lower than written is provided by bars 74-80 of the first movement and 85-89 of the finale. In the first instance, awkward octave displacements would result if this passage were played literally; in the second instance, some unacceptable part crossing between violin and cello would result from a literal rendition of these two bars. Accordingly then, all passages written in the treble clef should be transposed down an octave. The style and notation of articulation and dynamic markings have been standardised throughout, and, where missing from the print, markings have been reconstructed from parallel passages. Mendelssohn: Wedding March Mendelssohn’s Wedding March is so popular that it’s difficult to imagine a wedding without it. It seems like it’s been around for eternity. In any case, it was only 150 years or so ago that the Wedding March came about. It was performed in Potsdam for the first time in 1842, as a piece of Mendelssohn’s music for the Shakespeare play A Midsummer Night’s Dream. It was first used for a wedding in 1858 Mendelssohn Background Felix Mendelssohn (1809 –1847) was, by all means, a German mastermind composer, musician and orchestra conductor of the Romantic period. Consequently, Mendelssohn composed in the usual forms of the time - symphonies, concertos, oratorios, piano music, and chamber music. To summarize, his most famous works include his music for A Midsummer Night's Dream, the Italian Symphony, the Scottish Symphony, The Hebrides Overture, his later Concerto for Violin & Orchestra, and his Octet for Strings. His most well-known piano pieces, by and large, are the Songs Without Words. Artistic Standing Musical tastes change from time to time. Moreover, just such a change occurred in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. This plus rampant antisemitism brought a corresponding amount of undue criticism. Fortunately, however, his artistic inventiveness has indeed been critically re-evaluated. As a result, Mendelssohn is once again among the most prevalent composers of the Romantic era. Early Family Life Mendelssohn was, in fact, born into a prominent Jewish family. His grandfather was, notably, the philosopher Moses Mendelssohn. Felix was, in fact, raised without religion. At the age of seven, he was all of a sudden baptized as a Reformed Christian. He was, moreover, a child musical prodigy. Nevertheless, his parents did not attempt to exploit his talent. Early Adulthood Mendelssohn was, in general, successful in Germany. He conducted, in particular, a revival of the music of Johann Sebastian Bach, specifically with his presentation of the St Matthew Passion in 1829. Felix was truly in demand throughout Europe as a composer, conductor, and soloist. For example, he visited Britain ten times. There, he premiered, namely, many of his major works. His taste in music was. To be sure, inventive and well-crafted yet markedly conservative. This conservatism separated him by all means from more audacious musical colleagues like Liszt, Wagner, and Berlioz. Mendelssohn founded the Leipzig Conservatoire which, to clarify, became a defender of this conservative viewpoint. Mature Adulthood Schumann notably wrote that Mendelssohn was the Mozart of the nineteenth century, the most brilliant musician, the one who most clearly sees through the contradictions of the age and for the first time reconciles them. This observation points to a couple of features in particular that illustrate Mendelssohn's works and his artistic procedure. Musical Features In the first place, his musical style was fixed in his methodical mastery of the style of preceding masters. This being said, he certainly recognized and even developed early romanticism from the music of Beethoven and Weber. Structures The three instruments build differing structural patterns based on a 12-note row. The violin and 'cello often complement each other, but the piano rarely joins them and tries to pull the music towards a diatonic tonal language, eventually succeeding to end in G major. The movement is in arch form, the second half being based on the retrogrades of the note row. 2. Textures Most forms of sound textures are used, including col legno and sul ponticello for the strings, while the piano occasionally employs soft-headed timpani sticks both on the keyboard and the interior of the instrument. Again the movement is in arch form, with a central section incorporating a miniature scherzo, with a trio section parodying the palm court trio style with a tune of sickly sentimentality. [ This movement may be played separately under the title Einer Kleiner Alptraum - A Little Night... mare] 3. Metamorphoses The notes which will eventually become a Scottish folk tune are hidden either in the repeated notes or in the left hand of the piano, either singly or in harmony. After a neo- classical exposition, using a serial melody, progress is quickly halted by the use of some of the notes of the folk tune being arranged into the theme of Weber's Turandot which was used by Hindemith in his Symphonic Metamorphoses . This pulls the music into a slightly more tonal frame work which becomes more pronounced after a reference to the theme of the slow movement of the Eroica symphony used in Richard Strauss' Metamorphosen. From then onwards, tonality, or rather modality, is established and the folk tune style is maintained with simplicity to the end, except for a miniscule coda reminiscent of the opening of the movement. O Come, All Ye Faithful is an English translation of the Latin Christmas carol Adeste Fideles. No one knows exactly who wrote it. One theory holds that King John IV of Portugal (1604–1656) wrote it. Another view says John F. Wade or John Reading wrote it. Nowadays, we usually attribute it to John Wade. It seems like Stonyhurst College in Lancashire owns the oldest manuscript. It is from the year 1751. Lyrics Frederick Oakeley, a Catholic priest in 1841, wrote the English translation. This translation is probably the most common in English-speaking states. To begin with, the hymn had only four verses. Later, the verses grew to eight. Music directors often cut various verses because otherwise, the song goes too long. Some believe that St. Bonaventure wrote the first Latin lyrics. Others hold that King John IV of Portugal is responsible. Yet even others think the Cistercian monks wrote them. King John IV His subjects called King John IV of Portugal The Musician King. He became king in 1640. In addition to performing the duties of a king, he composed and wrote as a music journalist. King John built an extensive music library. Unfortunately, the massive earthquake in Lisbon ruined the library in 1755. In addition to making his library, the king started a Music School that produced many accomplished musicians. Aside from his authorship of Adeste Fideles, he is famous for another popular choral setting of the Crux Fidelis, a prevalent Lenten hymn. Performance in Context Verses are sometimes left out because all eight verses would take too long to perform. More to the point, though, some of the poems may be unsuitable for whatever church calendar they are intended. The eighth verse deals with the Epiphany, so it makes sense to sing this on Epiphany Sunday but not on other Sundays. Similarly, other poems are used for whether the event is Midnight Mass or regular daytime Mass. Â

An epic choice for a recital or funeral.Fauré Background: In the first place, Gabriel Fauré 1845 –1924) was a famous French composer, musician, and educator. Furthermore, his musical ideas influenced numerous 20th-century composers. Therefore, historians regard him as one of the leading French composers of his time. Famous Works: Among his most famous compositions, by and large, are the Pavane, Elegie (op. 24), Requiem, Sicilienne, Nocturnes for piano and the songs Après un rêve and Clair de lune. Inasmuch as his early works are well-known and relatively easy to perform, Faure’s music seems to have become gradually more difficult during his later life. In other words, his later works are somewhat esoteric and complex. Early Home Life: Fauré was in fact born into a well-cultivated family. His aptitude for music became particularly clear early on - when he was still a boy. Under these circumstances, his parents sent him to a music institution in Paris. Consequently, the training he received there prepared him for a career as a church organist and choirmaster. Middle Life: It is important to realize that Fauré studied music composition with the French musical mastermind Camille Saint-Saëns, who became his lifelong friend. Fauré eventually graduated from college and earned a living as an organist and educator. During this period, he had, on the whole, little time to compose. He consequently became more successful in his middle age, becoming organist of the Église de la Madeleine and director of the Paris Conservatoire. However, he still needed time on balance for composing. Therefore, given these points, he withdrew to the countryside during the summer to focus on composing. Later Life: Fauré was, in the final analysis, recognized in France as the foremost French composer of his time. The French government held a national musical tribute particularly for him in Paris. The French President notably headed the ceremony. Elsewhere, on the contrary, Fauré's music was slow to become accepted, except of course, in England. Legacy: Historians often describe Fauré's music in general as a transition between the end of Romanticism and the beginning of modernism. As an illustration, when Fauré was born, Chopin was still composing. However, by the time of Fauré's death, jazz and atonal music, in particular, had come to fruition. Fauré, by all means, suffered from increasing deafness in his later years. Some musicologists believe this to be indeed the cause of the esoteric nature of Faure’s final works.

French composer Jacques Leguerney (1906-1997) has been recognized for hisoutstanding oeuvre of songs for voice and piano, mostly composed upon poems of theFrench poets of the Pleiade. After his death, the Leguerney Estate decided to allow thepublication of his instrumental chamber music. These works, many of which werewritten in his early years, are valuable contributions to the French chamber musicrepertoire, representing the 20th century from its early years through World War II.This Trio was composed in 1928, but not performed until December 3, 1932. Therespected French musicians Hortense de Sampigny (violinist) and Jacques Serres(cellist) gave its first and, as far as we know, only performance along withLeguerney’s friend and mentor, Thérèse Cahen, at the piano. The concert includingthis work was organized by the Société Musicale Indépendante at the concert hall ofthe Ecole Normale de Musique in Paris. A review, in the Journal des débâts, reads:“We do not know this composer. Judging from his composition, whose variegatedstyle reminds us of [Cesar] Franck, of Maurice Ravel and of Spanish dances, he mustbe quite young.â€The same month as this performance, Leguerney’s father, Marcel Leguerney, died. Atthis point, he interrupted his musical activity in order to take over his father’s businessto support his mother and sister. He was not able to resume musical composition until1940, when the outbreak of the war led him to close the business.This edition is based upon two autograph manuscript sources of the full score, as wellas copyist’s parts for the violin and ‘cello. His first completed sketch as well as hisfinal copy are in the Leguerney archives. The parts, made by a copyist, were obviouslyused for a performance, and contain suggested phrasing, as well as bowings (whichwe have not reproduced). We surmise that the violin and ’cello parts were used for thefirst performance. We also think that Thérèse Cahen must have kept her piano score,as the copyist's score of it was not found with the other parts.We have added rehearsal numbers, and corrected a few notational mistakes in themanuscript.We would like to thank Jean Libermann, cellist, and Marion Larigaudrie, violinist,for their advice in the preparation of this edition.

The origin of the tune was for a long time somewhat mysterious, as no other collector of folk tunes encountered it, and all known examples are descended from Ms. Ross’ submission to Petrie’s collection (1855). The title of the air comes from the name of the county located in Northern Ireland. The air was collected by Jane Ross of Limavady, County Londonderry, who heard it played by an itinerant piper or fiddler. The descendants of blind fiddler Jimmy McCurry assert that he is the musician from whom she transcribed the tune but there is no historical evidence to support this speculation. The tune was listed as an anonymous air, with a note attributing its collection to Jane Ross of Londonderry. This led to the descriptive title Londonderry Air being used for the piece.

It is also slightly inspired by Johann Sebastian Bach’s fugues from the Well Tempered Clavier and Muse’s song “Butterflies and Hurricanes†from the album “Absolutionâ€. It is meant to show the ups and downs of the relationship, especially how the more developed it got the more problems arose. It starts with a cloud-like scene meant to depict mild attraction. It then develops into infatuation in measure 21 as the main character gets to enjoy his experiences with his partner. It lasts for a little while as he finds newer and newer aspects of his partner that he enjoys. He then returns to a moment of stability with the restatement of the opening theme, and then tries again to get back into those moments of bliss. But this time something goes wrong. The character doesn’t quite realize it until it is too late, but a rift appears in the relationship. This is shown in the D Minor section, as the main character is sad and longing for things to go back to how they were, but is just stuck. After a while of trying different things, a settlement is reached and the two get closer again in the relationship, seen in measure 174. Except this time things are different, they are close to the bond shown earlier, except not quite there. This can be seen with the rearrangement of voices in regards to the melody, such as the cello having the melody except the violin in measure 190. Although the two try their best, the relationship once again reaches a rift between the two, seen with the reemergence of the D Minor section. They try once again to patch things up, but end up becoming unsuccessful and breaking apart. The final sections starting at measure 246 depict the sadness and anger that follow, before eventually reaching a resolution back into the home key of F Major.

In my adaptation of a work originally composed in 2002 for eight-voice choir, violin and violoncello, I was particularly interested in recreating the tonal spectrum of the three extended vocalises (sung by the choir) for the piano in my new version for piano trio. While the piano part had to accommodate the entire choral texture, the parts for violin and violoncello remained almost unaltered. This was however not a mere transcription: above all, I significantly expanded the ecstatic climax occurring towards the end of the version for choir, which expresses a vision of dawn breaking and the awakening of nature with its profusion of birdsong.
