Mine is an actual setting of the Stéphane Mallarmé poem of the same title. Even though the entire poem is in the voice of the 'faun,' who is a male, albeit half human-half goat, I decided that because the poem is so beautiful and seductive a soprano voice would do the words justice. I divided the poem into five parts. 1. Ces nymphes, je les veux perpétuer ... 2. O bords siciliens d'un marécage ... 3. Tâche donc, instrument des fuites ... 4. The Chalumeau Concerto by Johann Friedrich Fasch (1688 - 1758) is one of the few examples of a piece written by a signiï¬cant composer for this instrument. In addition to being a piece written for an instrument in transition, the piece itself is from an era when compositional style was in great transition. The Chalumeau Concerto has elements that can be considered either late Baroque period or early Classical period just like the instrument itself. To add to the strange development of this instrument, two additional spellings are found on the original set of parts. “Chalumeaux†and “Chalimeau†can be clearly seen. The fascinating sound of ancient Greek creates a dialectic relationship with the modern international english language. All happens wihin a very interesting proposal for an avantgarde sacred music fitted for liturgical uses too. A considerable number of singers and of strings is required in order to create an adequate sound space and colour. Particular care is required by the intonation and the creation and substain of the right tone (which are perhaps the biggest challenge by the piece) but the entire music created by the phonemata and the training about it could be very funny and very precious and helpful for an interesting growth of a very fine Choir. The piece won the International Composition Competition Anima Mundi organized by the Opera Primaziale di Pisa in 2009.Stefano Maria TorchioItalian Violinist, Composer and Conductor, spent his education between Italy and the University of Music and Performing Art in Vienna, where he studied Orchestral Conducting with U. Lajovic and J. Wildner and Choir Conducting with E. Ortner and T. Lang. Further studies made Torchio in Violin, Composition and Organ at the Music Conservatory of Padua (his home town).He won prizes by international composition competitions like the Anima Mundi of the Opera Primaziale di Pisa, the A. Casella of the Accademia Chigiana of Siena, In memoriam... Johannes XXIII of Comune di Sotto il Monte, the MiniMusicDrama of Ovada and the Composition Prize of the Music Conservatory of Padua. He also participated by seminaries and masterclasses in Composition and Conducting with important Maestri like Z. Metha, F. Luisi, B. de Billy, S. Young, G. Andretta, A. Corghi, I. Fedele, C. A year ago I wrote a work for soprano and string quartet titled Gaspard de la Nuit on a set of poems by Aloysius Bertrand. Ravel's Gaspard de la Nuit is for solo piano, a set of tone poems inspired by the poems of the same A. Bertrand. Liegt es an ihrem Charakter, an der Landschaft, die sie durchfließen? An ihrem Wasser, ihren Fischen gar? An den Menschen an ihren Ufern? Es entsteht eine veritable Konfusion. Bei darauf folgenden Gedanken über Musik entdeckt der Komponist gewisse Analogien und stellt sich die Frage: Gibt es eigentlich geschlechtertypische Musik? Oder Instrumente? Typisch männliche Harmonien oder Rhythmen? Oder eindeutig weibliche Melodien und die Art, zu interpretieren? Dieser Frage widmet sich die 3-sätzige Komposition und mäandriert dabei tänzerisch im Bett der zusammenfließenden Ströme. Farbenreiche modale Harmonien bilden das Bett für weite Melodiebögen. Ein variiert wiederkehrendes Thema gibt die Richtung vor und erzeugt einen sprudelnd tänzelnden Sog in Richtung der Mündung: Tanzendes Finale! 1. Satz: Deux Charactères Im ersten Satz (Andante) werden die Rollen verteilt - die Sâone und der Rhône erhalten ihre Darsteller. Ein erster Blick auf das Ensemble lässt schon eine Tendenz erkennen: Holzbläser(inne)n übernehmen die weibliche Hauptrolle, das männliche Blech den Gegenpart. Die beiden Schlagwerker unterstützen solidarisch je einen der beiden Pole. Mag die Zuordnung auf der Hand liegen, so bleiben doch starke Zweifel im Schlussakkord des ersten Satzes. 2. Dialogues In kleineren und größeren Dialogen wird sich munter ausgetauscht und werden die Eigenschaften herausgearbeitet und weiter entwickelt. Aber es wird zunehmend auch kopiert und imitiert, gar boshaft agitiert und nachgeäfft. Man versucht sich gegenseitig zu überzeugen, fällt sich ins Wort, braust beiderseits zunehmend auf, es wird lauter und hektischer, immer lauter, zu laut, bis die Kommunikation erlischt: Man schreit sich schließlich nur noch an! 3. Dance de Conflusion Die entstandene Konfusion findet im dritten Satz der Komposition ein versöhnliches Ende: Lasst uns tanzen! So wird schlussendlich aus der anfänglichen Confusion eine Conflusion: Es fließt und tanzt zusammen, was zusammen gehört. The weather was magnificent in May. Our friends Seph and Roger met us there. Being long-time veterans of Paris, they took us all over the city: Le Marais, the Left Bank, Montmartre, Sacré Coeur, Père LaChaise cemetery, Avenue des Champs-Élysées, Jardin du Luxembourg, Jardin des Tuileries, Notre Dame cathedral, Eiffel Tower, the flea market at Porte de Clignancourt, the canal at Saint Martin, etc. Since the weather was so great we basically stayed outside the entire two weeks. My wife Kris said that we had to return next again to Paris to go inside the museums. So we did. The weather in Paris after Christmas was very damp and chilly. So we did indoor activities: Le Louvre, Musée D’Orsay, Palais Garnier, etc. We even attended a beautiful performance of Swan Lake by the Paris Opera Ballet at L’Opéra Bastille. I should also mention that on both occasions I met up with a former student of mine from Berklee, Joe Makholm. He makes a living in Paris playing jazz piano. Joe got us a gig at the Swan Bar in Montparnasse. On the first occasion we did it as a trio with a French bass player. I played flute. On the second occasion, we did it as a duo. Playing jazz in Paris? You can’t beat that!!! Early this year, Steven Lipsitt and I had a chat about my writing a new work for the Boston Classical Orchestra. My last work for the BCO was a piano concerto with Robert Levin as soloist. I told Steven that this time I wanted to write a symphony. He said, Sure. Go ahead. I told him it would be about Paris. He said he would put Mozart’s Paris Symphony on the same program. I said, Fabulous! Symphony No. 8 … City of Light (2011) is in five movements. 1. La Seine Presto, Moderato 2. Basilique du Sacré-Coeur Largo 3. Palais Garnier Allegro, Trio 4. Avenue des Champs-Élysées Allegro 5. Musée du Louvre Largo, Moderato This work is dedicated to my wife and muse, Kristin Beckwith.
