Arizona Centennial Overture was commissioned by the Arizona Commission on the Arts as part of the Centennial Legacy Project to help celebrate Arizona’s centennial. There are three versions of the compositions, chamber orchestra, full orchestra, and band. The overture pays tribute to the unique blend of the various cultures that had a part in shaping Arizona into what it is today. This six and a half minute composition is divided into three main sections. The first section begins with fanfares that announce the celebration. After thirty seconds, the introduction fades into music that pays tribute to the pioneers that migrated to Arizona. The music has a rustic quality reflecting the pioneering spirit of the ranchers, farmers, miners, and merchants who came to Arizona seeking a better way of life. This section is intended to be inclusive as it is impossible to represent each culture individually in a short musical composition. The second section pays tribute to the various Native American cultures that are a large part of Arizona’s history and its present way of life. Flutes and percussion instruments are used in the beginning of this section to represent the Native American respect for nature. This quiet section evolves into a ceremonial dance that increases in intensity. Towards the end of this section one hears fragments of the pioneer melody as these culture come together. The third section is influenced by Mariachi music to recognize the Hispanic influence in Arizona. The first part uses an original rollicking tune with four beats to the measure over syncopation. The second part contains a lyrical melody with three beats to the measure accompanied by instruments playing accents that create the Hispanic sounding grouping of six notes into three groups of two alternating with two groups of three. A brief ending using the fanfares of celebration interspersed with figures from the Native American and pioneer sections brings the work to a rousing close. The score prints on legal size paper and the parts on letter.

Published by stanleymhoffman.com (A0.924854). This piece was composed for and is dedicated to the Vine Orchestra, Michael Mikulka, Conductor. His call for scores was for (if memory serves) works for chamber orchestra under eight seconds in duration. That is arguably the most unusual call for scores to which the composer has ever or will ever respond. Consider the resultant composition a novelty piece that is only six seconds in duration. If any orchestra performs this work, it is sure to illicit laughter in the audience even though, interestingly enough, the music itself is anything but humorous-sounding. The title is taken from the fact that the composer took the word decade and ran it backwards to get the main and only theme of the piece (E-D-A-C-E-D). Perhaps this brief piece will serve as the basis for a larger work one day. Who knows? It's an attractive little thing. In the meantime, enjoy! (PS: it is painful to charge more than $2.00 for six seconds of music, but if SMP Press ever prints an order, I have to make it worth their while, rather than costing them money.).

Abel was born in Köthen, a small German city, where his father, Christian Ferdinand Abel, had worked for years as the principal viola da gamba and cello player in the court orchestra. In 1723 Abel senior became director of the orchestra, when the previous director, Johann Sebastian Bach moved to Leipzig. The young Abel later boarded at Leipzig's Thomasschule, where he was taught by Bach. On Bach's recommendation in 1743 he was able to join Johann Adolph Hasse's court orchestra at Dresden where he remained for fifteen years.[3][5] In 1759 (or 1758 according to Chambers),[1] he went to England and became chamber-musician to Queen Charlotte, in 1764.[3][5] He gave a concert of his own compositions in London, performing on various instruments, one of which was a five-string cello known as a pentachord, which had been recently invented by John Joseph Merlin.[6] In 1762, Johann Christian Bach, the eleventh son of J.S. Bach, joined him in London, and the friendship between him and Abel led, in 1764 or 1765, to the establishment of the famous Bach-Abel concerts, England's first subscription concerts. In those concerts, many celebrated guest artists appeared, and many works of Haydn received their first English performance. For ten years the concerts were organized by Mrs. Theresa Cornelys, a retired Venetian opera singer who owned a concert hall at Carlisle House in Soho Square, then the height of fashionable events. In 1775 the concerts became independent of her, to be continued by Abel and Bach until Bach's death in 1782. Abel still remained in great demand as a player on various instruments new and old. He traveled to Germany and France between 1782 and 1785, and upon his return to London, became a leading member of the Grand Professional Concerts at the Hanover Square Rooms in Soho. Throughout his life he had enjoyed excessive living, and his drinking probably hastened his death, which occurred in London on 20 June 1787. One of Abel's works became famous due to a misattribution: in the 19th century, a manuscript symphony in the hand of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, was catalogued as his Symphony no. 3 in E flat, K. 18, and was published as such in the first complete edition of Mozart's works by Breitkopf & Härtel. Later, it was discovered that this symphony was actually the work of Abel, copied by the boy Mozart-evidently for study purposes-while he was visiting London in 1764. This overture would make a lively concert opener for a group with smaller forces, or work just as well with a large string section. In the opera itself (Il re pastore, The Shepherd King; 1775), Mozart's overture  segues directly into the opening scene of Act One. Other Mozart overtures that segue thusly have been arranged with concert endings, such as The Abduction from the Seraglio (arr. Anton Andre) and Idomeneo, King of Crete (arr. Carl Reinecke). Most of the music contained in this arrangement is Mozart's, including the existing material from the original overture, developmental material of that music, and a segment extracted from the opera's final section. The work is about six minutes in length and is scored for one flute, two oboes, two bassoons, two horns in F, two trumpets in C, timpani, and string orchestra. A NotePerformer3 audio file is available from the arranger, as are parts in pdf format. Theme and Variations for Er Hu and Orchestra The er hu is a two-string Chinese violin, which I heard during a visit to China in August 2006. I liked the bold tone very much and decided to compose a piece for it. The theme and ending are written in Chinese style using the pentatonic or five-tone scale. The six variations move into Western harmonies and a variety of rhythms. The world premier was held on February 10, 2008. Matt Springer was soloist with the San Francisco Civic Symphony. The second performance by Matt was with the San Francisco Composers Chamber Orchestra on June 7, 2008, John Kendall Bailey, conductor.. The audio clip is a recording of that performance. I said, Sure!!! He said it would be nice if I would consider a concerto grosso in which the principal players of the orchestra would each get a feature. I agreed that that would be a fine idea. So, on June 18th, 2017, I started working on it. And since I am on summer vacation from teaching I was able to finished the 557-measure work on July 2nd, fifteen days after I started. In 2018 just before I made plans to get the work recorded I made some revisions. One major change was that I cut the fourth movement out completely. It is now a mere 482 measures long. The work is now in three movements. 1. Introduction; Allegro 2. Presto 3.
