During the spring of the Millennial year 2000, music director John Finney and the Boston College University Chorale premiered my Mass for the Holy Year 2000 for chorus and orchestra in Trinity Chapel at Boston College. It was a large work, close to an hour long in duration. It was a momentous occasion and I was extremely pleased with the performance by John and the BC University Chorale. Ten years later in anticipation of the 150th Anniversary of the founding of Boston College, I decided that I wanted to write another choral work for the BC Chorale. This time the subject would be something directly connected to the Jesuit identity of Boston College. I chose for text the poems of Gerard Manley Hopkins, S.J. (1844-1889). This Manley Hopkins project would come in two parts. Part One would be a private uttering of faith in God, and Part Two would be a public declamation of the same topic. The private utterance would be in a chamber setting. I decided on a song cycle setting for soprano and piano. The public declamation would be the choral work with orchestra for the Boston College University Chorale. 1. Part The First … THOU mastering me God! (2010) for soprano and piano The ten poems for this song cycle came from GMH's The Wreck of the Deutschland, Part the First. This 30-minute song cycle was premiered in Bapst Library on March 31, 2011. The performers were Megan Stapleton, soprano, and Diane Braun, piano. 2. God's Grandeur (2012) for SATB chorus and chamber orchestra. For this work I chose five poems by GMH. Pied Beauty God's Grandeur The Habit of Perfection Thou Art Indeed Just, Lord. Inversnaid Why did I choose GMH's work besides the fact that he was a Jesuit? I was very surprised and thrilled that his poems are so fanciful, imaginative and abstract in form and content for someone who lived in the 19th century. These abstract poetic qualities are the very things that a composer in the 20th and 21st centuries would find inspiring when they are seeking texts for musical settings. I did indeed find the sound and silences of GMH's words quite inspirational. Hearing music in those words came directly and quickly as I was working on the piece. I hope the audience will enjoy the work as much as I did when I was creating it.

Published by St Maur Music (A0.1007141). This song is an orchestral version of one of a series of ‘Fourteen Tolkien Songs’. A comment on the collection by an Oxford piano teacher: ‘For those who only know Tolkien via the recent blood-and-thunder films, this song-cycle by Charles McCreery will give a very different angle on the classic saga. Here we find a gentle and ethereal world, where rhythms lilt and words echo. The twelve songs, suitable for choir, evoke a dreamy, water-colour landscape with no harsh sounds, the tunes are singable and in a traditional style that Tolkien would surely have approved. Dr Julia Gasper, LGSM A general comment on Charles McCreery’s music by a violinist and composer in the USA: ‘Charles McCreery’s beautifully melodic, intricately textured compositions are infused with classical, romantic and folk idioms.’ Samantha Gillogly ‘Galadriel’s Song’ is appropriate for either women’s or children’s voices, and is potentially of interest to anyone who is familiar with the works of J.R.R. Tolkien. The three vocal parts and the individual orchestral parts can all be printed out separately at the end of the full score. On the front cover is a photograph of leaves in Wytham Woods, Oxford, and at the end of the full score is a photograph of the sea off Treyarnon Bay, Cornwall .

Published by Thomas Oboe Lee (A0.869867). Everyone knows L'Après-midi d'un faun, right? Well, in the case of Debussy it was a tone poem for flute and orchestra. Mine is an actual setting of the Stéphane Mallarmé poem of the same title. Even though the entire poem is in the voice of the 'faun,' who is a male, albeit half human-half goat, I decided that because the poem is so beautiful and seductive a soprano voice would do the words justice. I divided the poem into five parts. 1. Ces nymphes, je les veux perpétuer ... 2. O bords siciliens d'un marécage ... 3. Tâche donc, instrument des fuites ... 4. O nymphes, regonflons des Souvenirs divers ... 5. Tant pis! vers le bonheur d'autres m'entraîneront ...

The Acts of the Apostles (2009), an oratorio for baritone, chorus, congregation/audience, and chamber orchestra (piano, organ, strings-suggested minimum of 3.3.3.2.1),was commissioned by The Memorial Church at Harvard University. It is dedicated to Edward Elwyn Jones and theHarvard University Choir.The biblical books of Luke and Acts form a pair of documents from a single author and with a single audience (thelikely-metaphorical “Theophilusâ€), yet they are unusual for being composed in such contrasting genres. Luke’sgospel, using Mark as a primary source throughout, features a comparable literary style to that of the otherevangelists. Acts, by contrast, is a historical monograph that charts the birth of the Church with dramatic storiesabout—and speeches from—the apostles, painting a vivid, if not necessarily chronological, picture of their victoriesand struggles. As such, it is a book that provides excellent source material for a dramatic choral libretto of this scale.Although much of Acts is focused on the ministry of Saul/Paul, this oratorio draws most of its material from thefirst third of the book, prior to and including the conversion of Saul. In the Prologue, Christ’s ascension is narratedand—following an orchestral Sinfonia—the chorus sings words of Jesus from the Sermon on the Plain in Luke’sgospel that foreshadow many of the trials the apostles go on to face. The astounding account of Pentecost follows:here, words from the book of Ruth, customarily read on the feast of Shavuot (Pentecost), are included, telling thestory of a Moabite woman who converted to the Israelite faith—a parallel to the expansion of the Christian messageto all nations by the gift of the Holy Spirit. The Prayer for Boldness, quoting Psalm 2, asks God for protection fromthe threats of persecution that the apostles will now face.Stephen, regarded as the proto-martyr of the Christian Church, offers one of the most developed speeches in Acts,only a small portion of which is presented here. Full of scriptural references, including the quotation from Isaiah“Heaven is my throne…â€, the end of the narrative is remarkable for two reasons: firstly, Stephen’s final wordsmirror those of Christ on the cross in Luke’s gospel—where Jesus forgives his executioners and prays “Father, intoyour hands I commend my spirit†(Luke 23:46); secondly, Saul is specifically mentioned as one who approved ofStephen’s stoning, indicative of the redemptive possibilities of the Christian message.The account of the baptism of the Ethiopian eunuch here in the oratorio ends with the First Song of Isaiah—whilenot quoted in Acts, it seems a fitting conclusion to the scene as Philip and the eunuch were reading Isaiah together,and the canticle has often been associated by Christians with the rite of baptism. COMPOSER’S NOTE: Story Nr. 2 for chamber ensemble and a narrator, was written as a commission for the 1983 Children's Music Festival in St. Omer, France. Since its inception, the work has been widely performed in French, German and English. The narrative of Story Nr. 2 is a little known children's story by the great French author and playwright Eugene Ionesco (1912 – 1994). The story is about play on words. Little Josette has a conversation with her father who teaches her the new meaning of words: A Telephone is called Cheese, a Cheese is a Music Box, the Music Box is called a Rug and so on. The meanings become funnier and stranger ad absurdum. Then Josette and her father combine the words into sentences and practice the new mismatched names and objects. The characters participating in the story beside of Josette and her father are Josette's pretty mother and the maid Jacqueline. Each of the characters has its own musical theme and color represented by distinguished instrumentation: Jossette's theme is played by the flute, the father is represented by the trumpet and trombone, the pretty mother by the oboe and Jacqueline by the xylophone and piano. Rhythm Herd is a celebration of rhythmic energy in words and music. Euan Tait's poem harnesses the stampede of whinnying horses, the crackle of the fire, thundering south and gives the singers the power of nature's forces. The four sopranos keep constant pulse passed between the voices as the quavers are herded into chords, melody, phrases and whole movements. Their warm tones are punctuated by riffs on the recorder, building up to an extended obbligato fughetta. Finally, the heart dissolves to ashes, the pulse of the sopranos slows, while the recorder maintains the rhythmic riffs, now in time with the human heart. Rhythm Herd was commissioned by Philomel and first performed by them on 24 November 2018.

Bates originally wrote the words as a poem, Pikes Peak, first published in the Fourth of July edition of the church periodical The Congregationalist in 1895. At that time, the poem was titled America for publication. Ward had originally written the music, Materna, for the hymn O Mother dear, Jerusalem in 1882, though it was not first published until 1892. Ward's music combined with the Bates poem was first published in 1910 and titled America the Beautiful. The song is one of the most popular of the many U.S. patriotic songs. Legacy is a three-movement composition for chamber orchestra that makes social commentary on the issue of global warming. It was commission in 2007 by the Washington Sinfonietta, Rufus Jones, conductor and rewritten for chamber orchestra in 2023. I. Conflicts - This movement begins with a cry from native cultures admonishing our neglect of the environment. The cry is interspersed with debate regarding the seriousness of global warming (woodwinds). The debate grows stronger as the cries grow weaker. The debate isquieted by a measure of repeated chords that could be the words, stop it! stop it now!” A weak cry in the English Horn brings the introduction to a close. An Allegro section follows with a rhythmic and primitive sounding section representing the underdeveloped nations that are destroying the rain forests for economic gain. This material evolves into a more harmonic and contrapuntal section representing industrialized nations reluctant to change, also for economic reasons. Things quiet down as the music takes the listener to another part of the globe, East Asia. Conflict is again present in this section. The music returns to a varied restatement of the industrialized nations music before traveling to India for a section influenced by Raga. This section builds in dissonance until we hear the repeated stop it now chords from the introduction. A brief reprise of the cries brings the movement to a close. II. Consequences - This movement evokes a somber mood that is reflective of living in a climate of extremes. The movement is in arch form as it begins and ends with open harmony reflective of barren lands that once were fertile. The middle section serves as a climax expressing the harshness of the climate. Colleen McCullough's book, A Creed for the Third Millennium was a source of inspiration for this movement. III. Sacrifice and Compromise - The movement begins with a strong section that suggests progress. It is followed by a quieter and intense section that alternates lyrical lines over a staccato ostinato creating a sense of urgency. The opening section returns and is followed by a development of the ostinato section. This section is symbolic of how ideas need to be adapted in order for progress to be made. The opening section returns once more before leading into the concluding section where there is coming together of the instruments on a long lyrical line representing more and more people working together for change. The movement ends with a sense of triumph over adversity. Score prints on legal size paper and parts on letter.

The Canticum Canticorum text also known as Song of Songs, the Song of Solomon, the Canticle of Canticles, (Old Greek: Άσμα Ασμάτων, same meaning as song of songs). As David Berlo once beautifully put this into words: Meanings are in people … not in the messages …. The elements and structure of a language … are only symbols …. Meanings are not transmittable … Only messages are transmittable, and meanings are not in the message, they are in the message-users! Therefore, I needed to understand and interpret the text itself, even before I wanted to try setting it to the music. However, in order to understand the text correctly, one should comprehend the origin of the text and get to know its author(s), at first. In the case of Canticum Canticorum, both the author and the origin of the text are obscure. Furthermore, even the approximate date/century/era of the birth and the cultural context in which the text was created, are far from clear. According to the scholars, the creation of the text ranges from the tenth century B.C.; the era of Solomon, up to the first century B.C., and the origin of it considers from Indian, Tamil, or Ethiopic literature to Palestinian one. Because of these vast spectra of dates and cultures, I had to read and understand the text, compare with other sources, find similarities in other languages and cultures, hermeneutically interpret it and search for those non-written or metaphorical clues that may lead to unfasten the mystery has been attached to the text. In order to achieve the most accurate and faithful interpretation of the text I also had to answer few questions regarding the style, structure, medium, architecture and techniques of the music in relation to the text. I have used string orchestra and mixed choir to render the ideas, since that is among highly versatile instrumentations capable of providing small and delicate whispers, heavenly voices, and intonation changes that is hardly-reproducible by other mediums as well as thunderous sounds. Although Canticum Canticorum is single-movement work, but still possible to distinguish three different sections: the beginning choral part that is a long fugue in 5 voices with the material of serial music which helps orchestra to enter and grow, the a-capella middle section consists of two contrasting but invisibly related atmospheres and the third section – the recapitulation of the ideas already presented, in both the text and the music. The culmination of the work; 11-parts choral, takes place in the third section, somewhere near the end of the piece. Canticum Canticorum, for Grand String Orchestra & Mixed Choir, is dedicated to the genius composer of our time, Maestro Prof. dr. h.c. Krzysztof Penderecki.

WheatMyer Music #4766879. Published by WheatMyer Music (A0.976709). PASSION CHORALE is the name given to a 1656 German tune which accompanies the words of the ancient hymn, O Sacred Head Now Wounded. This tune is clearly heard throughout this instrumental arrangement called Pathos Chorodia, which is a transliteration of the Greek for 'passion chorale.' I chose the Greek due to it being the common language of the First Century Near East with which the early Church was fluent. Although the familiar melody is heard clearly throughout, the setting will sound very foreign to most ears. In acknowledgment of the atonal origins of the pierrot ensemble, this arrangement embraces dissonance and chromaticism, and avoids clear statements of conventional harmony without, however, being altogether atonal. Thus, it is a most unusual setting of the tune, but one that poignantly paints the deep anguish expressed in the hymn text, the anguish of the crucifixion's witnesses. The music is simultaneously shocking and familiar, which seems a fitting way to present this familiar story in all its shocking horror.The music may be successfully performed with advanced high school or later musicians. It is not excessively technically demanding but will require artistic taste and expressiveness. It is good selection for chamber ensemble concerts and suited for either secular or sacred venues.
