This arrangement is for 4 ‘cellos and would make a nice encore or be perfect for inclusion in a varied program. All parts are in bass clef and only the second ‘cello part goes above 4th position (Bb), making it ideal for a student ensemble of mixed ability. Keep Calm & Play Cello! Note from the arranger: All my arrangements for ‘cello quartet, quintet and sextet are conceived specifically with the range and technical capabilities of the ‘cello in mind – no simple transpositions or re-orchestrations of string quartet scores. They are therefore both easily playable and enjoyable by any intermediate to advanced ‘cello ensemble. This beautiful arrangement for cello quintet or cello ensemble gives justice to the emotional piece. The cello is able to capture both the spirit of the string section and the harp arpeggios played in pizzicato by all parts. Although the difficulty of each cello part is in descending order from 'cello 1' to 'cello 5', all the parts are equally exciting, and will play melody, harmonies, and the harp arpeggios. Cello 1 The arrangement has been written for both 5 solo cellists, as well as a cello ensemble with more than one player on each part. The piece has not been bowed, and players are free to be write bowings after downloading.

Howard (A0.998867). Monody is a fast tempo study for solo cello which explores the development of a single line (there is no double stopping). The work centres around E minor, and states the main motif at the outset (E, G, F#). This is then extended and transformed throughout the course of the piece. An initial introductory motivic passage is followed by a scalic section that features another core concept of the work; that of the octatonic scale (alternating semitones and tones, or vice versa). Then comes the main extended scherzo-like section, itself in a ternary structure, that exploits permutations of the opening motif and the octatonic scale, across the entire range of the cello. The work builds towards a climax, including in extreme high pitch and loud dynamics. After a silence, there follows a very quiet and mysterious muted coda, which briefly recounts the main motivic ideas of the piece, before ending on the only pizzicato note of the work. My arrangement of for four ‘cellos has been written with 3 soloists and a ‘continuo’ in mind. None of the parts go beyond 4th position (with the exception of harmonics), so the challenge is to be found in the musical interpretation & ensemble playing aspects. Some close harmonies make good intonation essential. There is also rhythmic interest in the syncopated vocal line. It is written solely in bass clef and lasts approximately two and a half minutes. When I first saw the enormous chair Rachel Gardner and Carlos Canul constructed for A Gift from the Bower, an outdoor, multi-disciplinary group exhibition conceived by renowned artists James Surls and Charmaine Locke, I had a vision of a cellist seated in a chair on the chair, performing solo in a bower deep in the woods of Splendora Gardens. I shared this image with Rachel, who didn’t think I was nuts, and over the course of several weeks, composed a piece for unaccompanied cello to be performed at the opening of the exhibit. I was honored when cellist Patrick Moore agreed to premiere the work; his formidable technique and the deep expression he brings to his playing inspired me to embrace the challenge of composing a solo for his instrument.Knowing my piece would be performed outdoors, I was inspired to evoke the rhythm of sound events one hears in woods, especially the rise and fall of wind as it moves through branches and leaves. The very opening of the piece and later, what I hear as an extended coda, were created as moments for the cellist as much as for the listener and are performed in a sort of meditative state, calling to mind the age-old question, “If a tree falls in a forest and no one is around to hear it, does it make a sound?†The repeating measures of 16th notes in the piece’s demanding middle section pay tribute to two of my heroes, Terry Riley and Philip Glass. While composing the work, Bach’s Six Suites for Violoncello Solo was another important point of reference, as was double bassist Eberhard Weber's 1973 album, The Colours of Chloë.Once finished, it made sense to name the piece A Gift from the Bower since the opportunity to compose the work was a gift, and in exchange, so is the music I have composed.A Gift from the Bower premiered on April 22, 2023, by Patrick Moore at the Locke Surls Center for Art and Nature.A revised version of this piece was completed on September 5, 2023.

Compuestas en su mayorÃa en el año 2011, estas piezas para violoncello solo nacieron en principio por una necesidad propia de tener un repertorio que, si bien presentara un desafÃo, con la práctica y el estudio fuese posible interpretar. Muchas veces note que las obras escritas para cello que llegaban a mi atril eran, o bien demasiado sencillas (en la tonalidad de do mayor, en primera posición, con figuras rÃtmicas elementales, etc.) o eran directamente imposibles para quien no es un virtuoso. Luego de comentarlo con algunos colegas descubrà que no solo yo enfrentaba ese problema, asà que me decidà a crear mis propias obras, para las cuales utilicé tonalidades con algunas alteraciones (las necesarias) las primeras cuatro posiciones (mas la media posición) y los golpes de arco que mas me atraÃa ejecutar, asà como los diferentes matices, intensidades y caracteres propios de la música de cámara que siempre queremos tocar y a veces no se puede por las razones arriba mencionadas. Por supuesto este no es un libro de ejercicios, pero las digitaciones indicadas y las ligaduras son, además de las más adecuadas a mi criterio, ideales para ejercitar los cambios de posición, los golpes de arco y las técnicas que ofrece nuestro instrumento. El recurrente uso de la escala menor armónica es porque me gusta a mÃ, que soy el autor. Otro detalle que algunos han considerado una ventaja es el hecho de que las piezas estén compuestas por un cellista, ya que suponen que no hay dificultades innecesarias ni simplificaciones hasta el absurdo, en otras palabras, que sabe lo que puede tocar y lo que no. Es mi deseo que quien se embarque en el estudio de estas piezas disfrute con su ejecución, encuentre una excusa para pasar más horas estudiando y se convierta en un músico más completo.
