The opera Carmen by Georges Bizet is almost universally considered to be the greatest opera ever written, and if you have ever heard any of it, you already know why - the lyrical beauty and power of the fantastic songs that are in it. Serious flute players have always included the famous theme and variations based on Bizet’s music, composed by Francois Bourne for flute and piano, in their programs, and it remains one of the most popular works in the entire flute literature. Here is a flute quartet version of this amazing work scored for Three C Flutes with optional Piccolo double in the Flute two part, and Alto Flute, with an optional Bass Flute part that copies the Alto part if you want to use five players and beef up the lower notes. Rest assured that this arrangement is not a simplified version - it retains all of the difficulty, passion, and energy of the original piece. The technical passages are divided between first and second flute, with the lower parts driving the engine that both adds lyricism and excitement to this energetic juggernaut.
