This arrangement adapted for clarinet quartet was designed to make its listeners weep with emotion, because the adaptation preserves the original essence of the work, keeping its integrity faithful to what Beethoven wanted to transmit, with only a slight change in tone and addition of harmonic resources in the structure of the arrangement. Even though it is a funeral march, it is well suited for any musical performance occasion, being intended for beginner students who want to immerse themselves in the universe of romantic music, and nothing better than starting with the transitional composer of this period, which also does not prevent professional teachers from using it for recitals, academic presentations or didactic material in their classes as an ensemble practice. Ludwig van Beethoven's Piano Sonata No. 14 in C minor sharp, Op. 27, No. 2, is one of his most popular compositions and was an audience favorite even in his day. Written when Beethoven was 31, the Moonlight Sonata (Mondscheinsonate in German) was composed after he finished some commissioned works, but there is no evidence that he was hired to write this work. It did not receive its nickname until 1832, five years after Beethoven's death. It was the critic Ludwig Rellstab who compared the music to a moonlighting on Lake Lucerne. This comparison was adopted as a nickname for the work. Called Quasi una fantasia by the author - like its companion Op. 27, No. 1 - the piece was completed in 1801 and dedicated the following year to one of the composer's pupils. Beethoven chose to open the sonata with a slow, hypnotic arpeggio movement, the best known of the entire work. The dotted rhythm of its minimal melody evokes the tradition of 'Trauermusik' (funeral music).

This arrangement for advanced players aims to present Edvard Grieg's well-known piano miniature as faithfully as possible for a clarinet quartet. The only simplification I've made is to transpose it up half a step from the original D major. It's a musically satisfying teaching piece that will also delight audiences in a "solos and ensembles" concert, or as music for a wedding. The prominent Alto Clarinet part can alternatively be played on Basset Horn.

The habitat changes are depicted by gradual use of unstable scales, and the sometimes hidden ancient tune of the Dies Irae, the Day of Wrath.The point I wish to make is how humans must be watchful of wildlife habitats because we are all in this limited world together. One might think this would be sad, violent music, but each earthly creature is shown in its musical habitat where it happily does what it does best....bees buzzing around flowers, cuckoos gently calling in the forest, Walruses jumping not so gracefully onto sea ice, Jaguars quietly stalking their prey. The habitat changes are depicted by gradual use of unstable scales, and the sometimes hidden ancient tune of the Dies Irae, the Day of Wrath.The point I wish to make is how humans must be watchful of wildlife habitats because we are all in this limited world together. Where wild creatures go, so do we. It was best said by Jane Goodall: Only if we understand can we care. Only if we care will we help. Walruses are huge aquatic animals who are powerful and swift in the water, but when they jump onto sea ice to rest, they are anything but graceful. They are a bit comical, really. Subsistence hunters in the Bering Strait of Alaska are having trouble with their Spring hunts due to gradual warming of the arctic waters. Sea ice is getting thinner and the Walruses they rely upon to live are getting too far away. This Walrus Jump music is a pretty happy sounding boogie woogie that shows signs of musical distress as it goes on.

One might think this would be sad, violent music, but each earthly creature is shown in its musical habitat where it happily does what it does best....bees buzzing around flowers, cuckoos gently calling in the forest, Walruses jumping not so gracefully onto sea ice, Jaguars quietly stalking their prey. In this piece I imagined a Jaguar slowly stalking its prey, moving silently on velvet paws. She moves carefully but with barely hidden energy, pausing, then freezing, then suddenly pouncing. Surprise! Sadly, the Dies Irae music plays on. .
