As much as it is a funeral march, it is well suited for any musical performance occasion. The transcription is faithful to the structure, with only one change of key, so that it is comfortable for all the instruments in the formation, as well as for use in ensemble practice between musicians of different traditions. Ludwig van Beethoven began concentrated work on his Symphony No. 7 in A major Op. 92 in 1811, it was completed in 1812, and was dedicated to Count Moritz von Fries, and premiered in Vienna on December 8, 1813. It is considered a remarkable example of the more ebullient side of Beethoven's compositional personality and evidence that even after the onset of deafness, he still found cause for musical optimism. The second movement Allegretto is a funeral march in everything but name. Often several contrasting melodic ideas are made to coexist, as if Beethoven were imagining several processions converging on the cemetery at the same time. As he was working on this symphony during the years of the Napoleonic Wars, this experience was probably within his experience. It was also used as the soundtrack to the film Knowing, by director Alex Proyas and starring Nicolas Cage, where it is used in the final scene of the film. So I would simply say that the motif throughout is stretched, further elongated, scrunched up, placed on different beats, played upsidedown, sideways, shortened, further shortened, over the bar, under the bar, off to the bar(!), and so on, it shouldn't work!! But of course it really does, really! I've known this piece for many years, but it was not until I began unravelling it for this Clarinet version that I must again doff my cap to old J.S. and his enduring genius! Â

The theme proper can be heard in the fugue subject of the first movement. The second movement uses the theme in retrograde inversion (backwards and upside down) to emulate the music of Gagaku. Gagaku literally translates as elegant music and is the ancient imperial court music of Japan. The third movement uses the theme in retrograde (simply backwards) to create a sarabande. Sarabandes are typically associated with the dance suites of the Baroque era but are said to have originated in Central and North America. The Sarabande was banned for a time in 16th century Spain for it’s lascivious nature. The final movement uses the original form of the theme combined with a traditional drumming pattern of the Ewe people of Togo, Benin, and Ghana, West Africa. I. Europe: An Enlightenment Fugue II. It all sounds fine, but you could say the melody could have been written upside down! It is set by John Gibson for clarinet quartet (2 Bb, 1 alto clarinet, 1 bass clarinet and there is an alternate Bb part to take the place of the alto part).
