The Fugue in A-flat minor, WoO 8, is one of the early organ works by Brahms, composed around 1856-57. It is an intense, brooding fugue published without an opus number. The fugue is part of a small set of four early organ pieces by Brahms, including the chorale prelude and fugue O Traurigkeit, o Herzeleid (WoO 7). These early organ works demonstrate Brahms' mastery of counterpoint at a young age. Bach completed the 24 preludes and fugues that make up the first book of the Well-Tempered Clavier in 1722 in Cöthen, where much of his other important instrumentalchamber music was written. The twenty-four segments go through all of the major and minor keys, with an prelude which explores a single texture or figuration and a contrasting fugue in either 2, 3, 4 or 5 voices. In this arrangement, the different voices are either shared by the four instruments or, in the case of the five voices of the Fugue in Bb minor, implied through arpeggios in the alto and tenor voices. Care must be taken to make these implied chordssound through discretely sustaining these voices through resonance.The preludes are generally in relatively free improvisatory forms which explore different types of baroque devises, including italianate keyboard figuration, “arioso†ornamented melodies with ostinato accompaniments, and more abstract forms. Two of the preludes are especially notable: the stately harmonic progression of the First prelude in C major, one of Bach’s most well-known works, and the gigantic prelude and double fugue of the Eb Major prelude.The fugues represent an exploration of all styles, ranging from the Ricacare in the Fugue no. 4 in c# minor and the use of augmentation, canon and inversion in no. 8 in Eb minor.

Parts included for SATB or AATB SaxophonesFugue in Blue started out as a Clarinet Trio called Jazz Fughetta, indicating that it was a simple fugue in a jazz style, but without the formality of a fully worked out fugue. In this Saxophone Quartet version, the first three voices enter fugally with the second beginning on the dominant and the third back in the tonic. After a contrapuntal interlude based on the opening rhythms, the fourth voice enters on the sub-dominant.The original work was a student composition exercise, combining a conventional classical form (fugue) with a syncopated jazz style. Many years later it has been reworked in swing style with a more laid back feel and some more inventive harmony and jazz articulation, so ideally suited to sax quartet.The work is well suited to recital programmes, as a light-hearted opener or relaxed interlude in a more serious concert. It is also suited to younger players who wish to combine the discipline of ‘classical’ chamber music while learning about jazz articulation, such as falls and short notes at the ends of phrases.

The Art of the Fugue is considered to be one of the greatest musical creations everundertaken. A series of fourteen fugues (last of which is not complete) and four canonswhich are all based on the same d minor theme would perhaps seem, at first glance, to be apendantic academic exercise. However, in the hands of a composer such as Bach, themonothematic material is magnified through repetion which creates a sound universe whichis all it’s own.The work is also shrouded in mystery, as there are no tempo indications in the manuscript,no indications of the instrumentation which Bach intended and no clear indication as to theorder of the movements. An ordering was given to the work after the composer’s death bythe composer’s son, C. P. E. BACH which attempted to underline the pedogogical aspects ofthe composition (as a sort of a textbook for studying fugues and counterpoint). The orderused in this arrangement respects this ordering as it was given by Bach’s heirs. It wouldseem probable however, that this order was not that intended by Bach.The editor hopes that this new version of the Art of the Fugue will be useful in allowingSaxophonists everywhere to perform this great work. For those who might have scruplesabout performing this work on the saxophone, it is best to follow the example of our pianistfriends, who perform this work and others on an instrument that Bach himself said that hedisliked.

Each of its six movements is dedicated to the memory of friends of the composer who had died fighting in World War 1. Ravel himself was an army driver during the war. Tombeau is a musical term popular in the 17th century meaning a piece written as a memorial. It was Ravel's intention to pay tribute to his friends and pay homage to the sensibilities of the Baroque French keyboard suites, of which Couperin was a master; this is reflected in the six-movement structure of Ravel's piece.
