The day after principal photography ended, he suffered a fatal heart attack, and the film was completed and released posthumously. The film was critically acclaimed, earning numerous accolades including BAFTA Awards for Best Film Not in the English Language, Best Direction, and Best Film Music. The soundtrack of the 1994 Academy Award-winning film The Postman (Il Postino) was composed by Luis EnrÃquez Bacalov.The album won the Academy Award for Best Original Dramatic Score and the BAFTA Award for Best Film Music.

We have performed the Trumpet Quartet version of this composition for many church services, especially funerals, when we were asked to supply something more somber and introspective rather than the louder, more festive music which many people come to expect from a Trumpet Ensemble. Francesco Durante was an Italian composer who was born on March 31, 1684 at Frattamaggiore, in the Kingdom of Naples. At an early age he entered the Conservatorio dei poveri di Gesu Cristo, in Naples, where he received lessons from Gaetano Greco. Later he became a pupil of Alessandro Scarlatti at the Conservatorio di Sant’Onofrio. He is said to have succeeded Scarlatti in 1725 at Sant’Onofrio and to have remained there until 1742, when he succeeded Nicola Porpora as head of the Conservatorio di Santa Maria de Loreto, also in Naples. He held this post for thirteen years, until his death on September 30, 1755. His fame as a teacher was considerable, and, unlike his Neapolitan contemporaries, who attracted international notice with their operas, Francesco Durante achieved recognition through his church music, along with some vocal chamber and instrumental works. His concern was not quantity. A complete collection of Durante’s works, consisting almost exclusively of sacred music, was presented by Gaspare Selveggi, a Neapolitan art collector and music theorist, to the Bibliotheque Nationale in Paris. The imperial library of Vienna also preserves a valuable collection of Durante’s manuscripts. The fact that Durante never composed for the stage brought him an exaggerated reputation as a composer of sacred music. He was considered one of the best church composers of his style and period. In his masses, requiems, litanies and Lamentations, he could provide strong expressive moments, as he does in this “Kyrieâ€. The Fugue in A-flat minor, WoO 8, is one of the early organ works by Brahms, composed around 1856-57. It is an intense, brooding fugue published without an opus number. The fugue is part of a small set of four early organ pieces by Brahms, including the chorale prelude and fugue O Traurigkeit, o Herzeleid (WoO 7). These early organ works demonstrate Brahms' mastery of counterpoint at a young age. While Brahms did not have a close personal relationship with the organ, the genre of the chorale prelude allowed him to pay homage to his musical heritage, following the conventions of the form by paraphrasing and elaborating on pre-existing Lutheran chorale melodies. The Fugue in A-flat minor is considered one of the most significant and high-quality of Brahms' early organ works. It was eventually assigned the posthumous opus number 122, which is still known today. So, in summary, the Fugue in A-flat minor is an essential early organ work by Brahms that demonstrates his mastery of counterpoint, even though the organ was not his primary instrument. It is considered a significant and high-quality piece within Brahms' overall organ output.

Emile Jonas was born March 5, 1827 in Paris and died on May 21, 1905 at Saint-Germain-en-Laye. Jonas entered the Paris Conservatory in 1841, studying piano and harmonie in the class of Félix Le Couppey, and composition with Michele Carafa. In 1849, he won the second Grand Prix de Rome with his Cantata Antonio. In 1847, Jonas became an assistant to the solfege classes at the Paris Conservatory, becoming a full professor in 1857. In 1859, be was named professor of musical composition and harmony at the Imperial military conservatory. In 1870, he retired from the Conservatory and took the post of Musical Director of the Garde Impériale. He was also cantor and choral director of the Portuguese synagogue in the rue Lamartine in Paris. Jonas was famous in his time for his comic operas, especially Le Canard à trois becs. His work Prière for saxophone quartet or sextet is one of the first ensemble pieces ever written for the saxophone. In 1854, he published a collection of Hebrew songs of the Sephardic tradition. This is the score and parts for the SATB saxophone quartet version. The version for SAATTB sextet is available as mfej001a on this site.
