While named French Suites by later sources like Johann Nikolaus Forkel, they follow Italian conventions with some French influences. The suites offer a rich musical experience, bridging different European styles and serving as valuable teaching pieces. Bach's French Suites are a testament to his compositional genius and continue to be cherished by musicians and audiences alike. The history behind Bach's French Suites is intertwined with a bittersweet period in Bach's life. In May 1720, Bach embarked on a trip, leaving his wife, Maria Barbara, and four children. Tragically, upon his return, he discovered that Maria Barbara had passed away. This loss led to a significant change in Bach's personal life as he became a single father mourning his wife. Despite this tragedy, Bach found love again with Anna Magdalena Wülcken, whom he married. As a gesture of affection and to cultivate her musical skills, Bach composed music for Anna Magdalena, including what would later become the French Suites. These suites were likely performed at court and reflected the couple's intimate musical companionship. The French Suites were not published during Bach's lifetime, possibly because he did not deem it challenging enough. Today, these suites offer an accessible path to Bach's music and are cherished for their stylized dance movements inspired by French and Italian forms.

The Art of the Fugue is considered to be one of the greatest musical creations everundertaken. A series of fourteen fugues (last of which is not complete) and four canonswhich are all based on the same d minor theme would perhaps seem, at first glance, to be apendantic academic exercise. However, in the hands of a composer such as Bach, themonothematic material is magnified through repetion which creates a sound universe whichis all it’s own.The work is also shrouded in mystery, as there are no tempo indications in the manuscript,no indications of the instrumentation which Bach intended and no clear indication as to theorder of the movements. An ordering was given to the work after the composer’s death bythe composer’s son, C. P. E. BACH which attempted to underline the pedogogical aspects ofthe composition (as a sort of a textbook for studying fugues and counterpoint). The orderused in this arrangement respects this ordering as it was given by Bach’s heirs. It wouldseem probable however, that this order was not that intended by Bach.The editor hopes that this new version of the Art of the Fugue will be useful in allowingSaxophonists everywhere to perform this great work. For those who might have scruplesabout performing this work on the saxophone, it is best to follow the example of our pianistfriends, who perform this work and others on an instrument that Bach himself said that hedisliked.

However, no substantial evidence exists that the suites were composed expressly for an English patron. The English Suites combine German, Italian, and French stylistic elements rather than being distinctly English in character. Â The term English was likely a later addition, possibly by Bach's biographer Johann Nikolaus Forkel. The English Suites were widely disseminated and studied by later composers, indicating their importance and lasting influence in the keyboard repertoire. Saxophone Quartet (SATB or AATB)In the Bleak Mid-Winter is a popular Christmas Carol which has been set to music by both Gustav Holst and Harold Darke. This sax quartet arrangement is based on the Holst version and combines the composer's beautifully simple harmony with the arranger's own counter-melodies and intricate wind writing. Lovely writing for all instruments. An ideal work for Christmas concert programming.This is a through-composed instrumental arrangement that explores the melody and harmonies of the Holst hymn in 3 differently arranged verses. After a short introduction the first verse uses Holst’s original 4-part harmonisation in its beautiful simplicity, with soprano saxophone playing the melodic line. In verse 2, the tenor sax presents the tune in a lower register while the baritone plays a Baroque style ‘walking bass’. The sopranoe and alto weave countermelodies above them, introducing new material for a Pachelbel-like interlude of an ascending sequence - bringing the music to a climax before subsiding into verse 3. Here a slightly ornamented version of the tune returns with the new material continuing in the bass line. After another smaller climax we return to the original Holst as the work ends quietly and thoughtfully.

This unusual combination of the Saxophone Quartet, ie 2 Altos & 2 Tenors is a fitting vehicle for these two pieces from The Well-Tempered Clavier Book 2. The original keys of C Major & Bb Minor have been altered to best suit the range of the 2 Saxes. Also, an opportunity for the Baritone player to get the drinks in !! The Prelude 1 Completely different from the Prelude that opens Book 1, which is mainly broken chords, this opening Prelude to Book 2 features a continuously flowing sequence of melodic ideas. According to Levison, few pieces of traditional music are more purely processive as this. It develops without a break or pause, without arrivals of significance, from beginning to end. Good to play as well!! The Fugue 22 The four voices are distributed throughout the parts, and at 101 bars, it is certainly one of Bach's longest, and definitely one of the most enjoyable to play, especially in a generous acoustic. Also available here in Clarinet Quartet and Wind Quartet (Flt/Ob/Clt/Bsn) flavours!!

As a gesture of affection and to cultivate her musical skills, Bach composed music for Anna Magdalena, including what would later become the French Suites. These suites were likely performed at court and reflected the couple's intimate musical companionship. The French Suites were not published during Bach's lifetime, possibly because he did not deem it challenging enough. Today, these suites offer an accessible path to Bach's music and are cherished for their stylized dance movements inspired by French and Italian forms.

Kyrie - by Francesco Durante; Saxophone Quartet – Intermediate – Digital Download. “Kyrieâ€, originally written for a four-part vocal ensemble by Francesco Durante, has now been transcribed, edited and arranged by Regis Bookshar, for a Saxophone Quartet, consisting of 2 Alto Saxophones and 2 Tenor Saxophones. It would be a welcomed addition to any music library. This short composition, which lasts less than two minutes, will provide many students with the opportunity to practice breath control because of its long phrases, and to help them to continue to develop good intonation because many of the phrases cadence on a unison note. This selection could be performed for concerts, recitals and church services. It is suitable for high school and college students but professional musicians would also enjoy playing this selection. Included are a score and a complete set of parts (8 pages). This selection is one of the many arrangements from the Regis Bookshar Trumpet Ensemble’s extensive music library which are being made available for the first time. We have performed the Trumpet Quartet version of this composition for many church services, especially funerals, when we were asked to supply something more somber and introspective rather than the louder, more festive music which many people come to expect from a Trumpet Ensemble. Francesco Durante was an Italian composer who was born on March 31, 1684 at Frattamaggiore, in the Kingdom of Naples. At an early age he entered the Conservatorio dei poveri di Gesu Cristo, in Naples, where he received lessons from Gaetano Greco. Later he became a pupil of Alessandro Scarlatti at the Conservatorio di Sant’Onofrio. He is said to have succeeded Scarlatti in 1725 at Sant’Onofrio and to have remained there until 1742, when he succeeded Nicola Porpora as head of the Conservatorio di Santa Maria de Loreto, also in Naples. He held this post for thirteen years, until his death on September 30, 1755. His fame as a teacher was considerable, and, unlike his Neapolitan contemporaries, who attracted international notice with their operas, Francesco Durante achieved recognition through his church music, along with some vocal chamber and instrumental works. His concern was not quantity. A complete collection of Durante’s works, consisting almost exclusively of sacred music, was presented by Gaspare Selveggi, a Neapolitan art collector and music theorist, to the Bibliotheque Nationale in Paris. The imperial library of Vienna also preserves a valuable collection of Durante’s manuscripts. The fact that Durante never composed for the stage brought him an exaggerated reputation as a composer of sacred music. He was considered one of the best church composers of his style and period. In his masses, requiems, litanies and Lamentations, he could provide strong expressive moments, as he does in this “Kyrieâ€. In addition to this arrangement for a Saxophone Quartet, Regis Bookshar has also made other arrangements of this selection. There are Quartets readily available for a wide variety of instrumental ensembles. Please take the time to look for other versions of this composition. You may find something else that may also suit your needs. I would also encourage you to search for other arrangements by Regis Bookshar, as well, as there are numerous arrangements in a variety of styles, also available for purchase.
