That's A Plenty was originally a piano rag written in 1914 by Lew Pollack but some time later, lyrics were added by Ray Gilbert. The tune soon became a very popular dixieland jazz standard.This arrangement was written for The Eclipse Saxophone Quartet in the UK and recorded on their 2001 album. It was meant very much as a tongue-in-cheek comedy vaudeville piece and proved very popular with both jazz and classical audiences.From an initial simple statement of the tune, this arrangement moves through several different styles, from bebop and show-two feel to an over-the-top waltz and becomes quite technically demanding in places. The Art of the Fugue is considered to be one of the greatest musical creations everundertaken. A series of fourteen fugues (last of which is not complete) and four canonswhich are all based on the same d minor theme would perhaps seem, at first glance, to be apendantic academic exercise. However, in the hands of a composer such as Bach, themonothematic material is magnified through repetion which creates a sound universe whichis all it’s own.The work is also shrouded in mystery, as there are no tempo indications in the manuscript,no indications of the instrumentation which Bach intended and no clear indication as to theorder of the movements. An ordering was given to the work after the composer’s death bythe composer’s son, C. P. E. BACH which attempted to underline the pedogogical aspects ofthe composition (as a sort of a textbook for studying fugues and counterpoint). The orderused in this arrangement respects this ordering as it was given by Bach’s heirs. It wouldseem probable however, that this order was not that intended by Bach.The editor hopes that this new version of the Art of the Fugue will be useful in allowingSaxophonists everywhere to perform this great work. For those who might have scruplesabout performing this work on the saxophone, it is best to follow the example of our pianistfriends, who perform this work and others on an instrument that Bach himself said that hedisliked.

Bach completed the 24 preludes and fugues that make up the first book of the Well-Tempered Clavier in 1722 in Cöthen, where much of his other important instrumentalchamber music was written. The twenty-four segments go through all of the major and minor keys, with an prelude which explores a single texture or figuration and a contrasting fugue in either 2, 3, 4 or 5 voices. In this arrangement, the different voices are either shared by the four instruments or, in the case of the five voices of the Fugue in Bb minor, implied through arpeggios in the alto and tenor voices. Care must be taken to make these implied chordssound through discretely sustaining these voices through resonance.The preludes are generally in relatively free improvisatory forms which explore different types of baroque devises, including italianate keyboard figuration, “arioso†ornamented melodies with ostinato accompaniments, and more abstract forms. Two of the preludes are especially notable: the stately harmonic progression of the First prelude in C major, one of Bach’s most well-known works, and the gigantic prelude and double fugue of the Eb Major prelude.The fugues represent an exploration of all styles, ranging from the Ricacare in the Fugue no. 4 in c# minor and the use of augmentation, canon and inversion in no. 8 in Eb minor.

Cécile Louise Stéphanie Chaminade (8 August 1857 – 13 April 1944) was a French composer and pianist. Born in Paris, she studied at first with her mother, then with Félix Le Couppey on piano, Marie Gabrie Augustin Savard, Martin Pierre Marsick on violin, and Benjamin Godard in music composition, but not officially, since her father disapproved of her musical education. Her teacher, Benjamin Goddard gave her an assignment to complete, a ballet symphonique, Callirhoë, Op. 37 (1888) that enjoyed many performances which added to its success. Movements from this work were extracted and fashioned for solo piano, namely Pas des écharpes, (Scarf Dance) and Pas des amphores, (Amphora Dance), both of which became popular staples of the piano repertory. This arrangement written in 2014 is playable by either SATB or AATB saxophone quartet. The original key has been changed to a more saxophone-friendly key.
