Sax Quartet (SATB or AATB)Looking for some familiar, yet very different Christmas Music? Look no further than the Snowdrift Galop written by British composer, Charles Coote Jnr. It starts off just like Jingle Bells - and the Jingle Bells theme keeps coming back, but is it actually Jingle Bells? It also has a march-like theme and a lovely Trio section. All players get to play important melodic material in this arrangement.Snowdrift Galop was published in London in 1868 in a small collection of works by various composers. The opening theme is immediately recognisable as the popular holiday favourite, Jingle Bells, which was published 11 years earlier, yet the composer gives no reference or credit to the earlier work. Although the opening soprano sax theme is the same as Jingle Bells, we get a stately march instead of the familiar Jingle Bells chorus. A lovely Trio introduces another new tune which is played by tenor, then baritone sax, before returning to the opening section on Alto.Charles Coote Jnr (1831-1916) was a prolific English composer of popular music, including quadrilles, waltzes and galops. His music was written for society balls and subsequently published for piano, so that others could play them at local dances or in their ownhomes. He was the son of composer and bandmaster, Charles Coote (1809-1880). Coote Snr worked for the 6th Duke of Devonshire for 30 years, conducted his private orchestra, and was referred to by the Duke as his personal pianist. Growing up in this environment would have ensured that Coote Jnr was well connected with British society.Duration - 4 minutes.

This arrangement adapted for sax quartet was written keeping the characteristics of the original work, that is, inspiring and significant to the already known choral symphony by Beethoven, indicated to be performed by young music students, who want to enter the symphonic music, moreover, it can also be used by professional musicians, for recitals, repertoire, academic presentations and didactic material. As much as it is a funeral march, it is well suited for any musical performance occasion. The transcription is faithful to the structure, with only one change in key, so that it is comfortable for all instruments in the formation, thus maintaining the essence of the striking melody, as well as using it for ensemble practice among musicians of different traditions. Beethoven's Ninth Symphony Op. 125 incorporates part of the poem An die Freude (To Joy), a hymn written by Friedrich Schiller, with the text sung by soloists and a choir in its last movement. It was the first example of a major composer using the human voice as prominently as the instruments in a symphony, thus creating a far-reaching work that set the tone for the symphonic form that was to be adopted by Romantic composers. This is the last complete symphony composed by Ludwig van Beethoven. The choral symphony, better known as the Ninth Symphony or The Ninth, is one of the best known works in the Western repertoire, considered both an icon and predecessor of Romantic music, and one of Beethoven's great masterpieces, where it was first performed on May 7, 1824, the same year it was completed, at the Kärntnertortheater in Vienna, Austria. The conductor was Michael Umlauf, the theater's music director, and Beethoven - dissuaded from conducting by the advanced stage of his deafness - was given a special place on the stage next to the conductor. It was later rearranged by Herbert von Karajan to become the anthem of the European Union in 1972, the national anthem of Rhodesia from 1974 until 1979, Rise, O Voices of Rhodesia, used the tune Ode to Joy..

Saxophone Quartet (SATB or AATB)In the Bleak Mid-Winter is a popular Christmas Carol which has been set to music by both Gustav Holst and Harold Darke. This sax quartet arrangement is based on the Holst version and combines the composer's beautifully simple harmony with the arranger's own counter-melodies and intricate wind writing. Lovely writing for all instruments. An ideal work for Christmas concert programming.This is a through-composed instrumental arrangement that explores the melody and harmonies of the Holst hymn in 3 differently arranged verses. After a short introduction the first verse uses Holst’s original 4-part harmonisation in its beautiful simplicity, with soprano saxophone playing the melodic line. In verse 2, the tenor sax presents the tune in a lower register while the baritone plays a Baroque style ‘walking bass’. The sopranoe and alto weave countermelodies above them, introducing new material for a Pachelbel-like interlude of an ascending sequence - bringing the music to a climax before subsiding into verse 3. Here a slightly ornamented version of the tune returns with the new material continuing in the bass line. After another smaller climax we return to the original Holst as the work ends quietly and thoughtfully.

SAXOPHONE QUARTET (SATB)
This is a really enjoyable arrangement for all four players. The soprano and baritone sax both get to play the tune, the soprano, alto and tenor all get to do the finger-snaps and play in a close-harmony jazz style, and there is a newly written jazzy section for everyone in the middle. The arrangement gets quieter and quieter before ending on a truly scary final chord!

One of Haydn's last string quartets arranged for saxophone quartet - the height of elegant and sophisticated writing for a small group of instruments. It takes its name from the second movement, in which Haydn uses the anthem 'God Save Emperor Francis' (which he wrote for Emperor Francis II) as the theme for a set of variations. This tune later became the German National Anthem, and is also well known as the melody for the hymn 'Glorious Things Of Thee Are Spoken'. In four movements, the first and last of which are extended compositions in sonata form. The second movement is the set of variations mentioned above, in which each instrument takes a turn at stating the tune, while the other instruments weave their variations round it. The third movement is a boisterous Minuett. An extended work, requiring neat playing from all musicians. The soprano part is particularly challenging, requiring nimble fingering and some rapid tonguing. The minuet and trio is easier but still rewarding. A chance for a sax quartet to try music from a different historical period.
