Woodwind Ensemble,Woodwind Quartet Alto Saxophone,Baritone Saxophone,Soprano Saxophone,Tenor Saxophone - Level 4 - Digital Download SKU: A0.532734 Composed by Johann Sebastian Bach. Arranged by Paul Wehage. Baroque. 21 pages. Musik Fabrik Music Publishing #1917. Published by Musik Fabrik Music Publishing (A0.532734). The Aria with 30 variations which form the work which is known as the « Goldberg » variations is one of the greatest works of Bach. It is his only work which uses the form of variations and through three series of ten variations each, it explores a myriad of musical genres and styles. The initial Aria, which seems to be rather trite and banal at the beginning of the work, is magnified through these transformations and the da capo at the end brings us back to the beginning, which has been changed by the musical journey itself. As a sort of musical « initiation », it has become a work which sparks the imagination and which creates an atmosphere all it’s own. The story of how the work came to be written has to come to us through Bach’s first biographer, Johann Nikolaus Forkel in 1805, seventy-five years after the death of Bach. It would seem that a certain Count Keyserlingk, the Russian Ambassador to the Court of Dresden, had difficulty sleeping and asked Bach to compose a work which his protégé, a harpsichord virtuoso by the name of Goldberg, could play in a salon near his bedroom to help him sleep in the evening. For this commission, Bach was to receive the largest fee of his life, a hundred louis d’or in a golden goblet. It would seem that this story is perhaps more of a legend than anything else, as no goblet was found in Bach’s estate at the end of his life and no documented proof of this story has been found. Goldberg was indeed a student of C. P. E Bach, Bach’s son and the son might have asked his father to write these works for his brilliant student. No manuscript for the Goldberg Variations exists, only a first edition corrected in the hand of Bach which contains certain tempo indications and other markings. The first edition also carried the following title: « Clavierübung, consisting of an Aria with diverse variations for the Harpsichord with two manuals composed for music lovers to refresh their spirits by J. S. Bach ». In this version for Saxophone Quartet, it is important to remember that Bach was writing for the harpsichord and not for the Piano-forte. Bach did indeed know of the Piano-forte and played one of the first instruments produced, but it would seem that he did not care much for this new instrument. To find something akin to the precise, clearly defined attacks of the harpsichord, precise articulation and clarity of sound must be the first priority. In general, even in the slowest movements, the attacks must take precedent over all other elements of performance. If the need for clarity of line and precision of attack is respected, the inherent musicality contained in the work should be evident, even in this new form.. As Bach himself transcribed many of his own works and those of others, I would like to hope that he would find this question to be interesting and the results to be surprising...

Saxophone Quartet,Woodwind Ensemble Baritone Saxophone - Level 2 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1137884 Composed by Christian Petzold, Johann Sebastian Bach, and Martin Luther. Arranged by Ander. Baroque,Easter,Renaissance,Sacred,Wedding. 44 pages. Woods Only, Arrangements #738138. Published by Woods Only, Arrangements (A0.1137884). This album contains 5 of Johann Sebastian Bach's most famous and versatile pieces for baritone quartet, all very well suited for the beginners who want to get to know the baroque repertoire. They are also suitable for performances at events such as: weddings, Christian and church ceremonies, Easter, and academic recitals or concerts. They can be used in music institutions and by teachers as repertoire material and study methods, either for performance or instrumental technique. This collection includes a totally free bonus for you to enjoy: Martin Luther's A Mighty Fortress is Our God, a Renaissance sacred song for choir, which has been adapted for this set. 1: Air on the G String - The original piece is part of Johann Sebastian Bach's Suite No. 3 for orchestra, in D Major, BWV 1068, written for Prince Leopold of Anhalt. The so-called Air on the G String dates from one of these latter employments. In the service of the Prince of Cöthen, Bach composed not only the famous Brandenburg Concertos, but also several orchestral suites, from the third of which comes the Air on the G String. This curious title derives from a later arrangement of this piece for violin solo, in which the melody is played entirely on the lower, higher string of the instrument. 2: Arioso - The Cantata 156 (BWV 156) was written for the third Sunday after Epiphany in 1729, and was first performed on January 23 of that year. The text is by Picander, one of Bach's favorite librettists. Of the four cantatas written by Bach for the feast, it was the last and only one scored for solo voice. This is a choral cantata, employing a choral melody in several movements. Cantata 156, in fact, employs two different choral melodies and texts in the second and sixth movements. A cantata is a sung symphony consisting of several parts, one of which is the Arioso, which is the initial instrumental part. 3: Jesu, joy of man's desiring - This is one of Bach's most beautiful cantatas, made famous by the Jesus the Joy of Men chorus. It was originally composed for Advent 1716 in Weimar. Years later, already in Leipzig, Advent was tempus clausum, there was no music in the churches. Bach then reworked it for the Feast of Mary's Visitation. It is the final chorale of the cantata Herz und Mund und Tat und Leben. Although it is the 32nd cantata composed by Bach, of those that have survived, it was given BWV 147 in the complete catalog of his works. 4: O Jesulein süss, o Jesulein mild - The Jesulein süß, the Jesulein mild is an original traditional German choral melody for voice and continuous bass arranged by Johann Sebastian Bach around 1735. With lyrics by Valentin Thilo, O Jesulein süss is a sacred melody adapted and catalogued as BWV 493. The first translation is by Dirk van Hogendorp, who made it more of a song for the time of suffering. 5: Minuet in G major - This famous piece has traditionally been attributed to Johann Sebastian Bach, as it appears in the Notebook for Anna Magdalena , a notebook that Bach gave to his wife Anna Magdalena in 1725 and which was to be filled with the favorite selections of Bach family members. However, recent research has concluded that this minuet, sometimes referred to as BWV Anhang 114. was probably composed by Christian Petzold, a German composer and organist contemporary with Bach. Bonus: A Mighty Fortress is Our God, by Martin Luther - Ein feste Burg ist unser Gott is a hymn written by Martin Luther probably before 1529. The melody was also considered his work for a long time, but it was created at least with the collaboration of Johann Walter. The song is of great symbolic power for Protestantism, where it is also known as Deus noster refugium et virtus. Considered one of the most important hymns in the history of Christianity, it was considered by the Christian poet Johann Heirich Heine (1797-1856) to be the Marseillaise of the Reformation, in an allusion to the French national anthem.

Woodwind Ensemble,Woodwind Quartet Alto Saxophone,Baritone Saxophone,Soprano Saxophone,Tenor Saxophone - Level 5 - Digital Download SKU: A0.534350 Composed by Johann Sebastian Bach. Arranged by Paul Wehage. Baroque,Concert,Standards. 242 pages. Musik Fabrik Music Publishing #3368447. Published by Musik Fabrik Music Publishing (A0.534350). The Art of the Fugue is considered to be one of the greatest musical creations everundertaken. A series of fourteen fugues (last of which is not complete) and four canonswhich are all based on the same d minor theme would perhaps seem, at first glance, to be apendantic academic exercise. However, in the hands of a composer such as Bach, themonothematic material is magnified through repetion which creates a sound universe whichis all it’s own.The work is also shrouded in mystery, as there are no tempo indications in the manuscript,no indications of the instrumentation which Bach intended and no clear indication as to theorder of the movements. An ordering was given to the work after the composer’s death bythe composer’s son, C. P. E. BACH which attempted to underline the pedogogical aspects ofthe composition (as a sort of a textbook for studying fugues and counterpoint). The orderused in this arrangement respects this ordering as it was given by Bach’s heirs. It wouldseem probable however, that this order was not that intended by Bach. The editor hopes that this new version of the Art of the Fugue will be useful in allowingSaxophonists everywhere to perform this great work. For those who might have scruplesabout performing this work on the saxophone, it is best to follow the example of our pianistfriends, who perform this work and others on an instrument that Bach himself said that hedisliked.

Baroque,Instructional,Sacred. 8 pages. Regis Bookshar #696560. Published by Regis Bookshar (A0.1092467). Kyrie - by Francesco Durante; Saxophone Quartet – Intermediate – Digital Download. “Kyrieâ€, originally written for a four-part vocal ensemble by Francesco Durante, has now been transcribed, edited and arranged by Regis Bookshar, for a Saxophone Quartet, consisting of 2 Alto Saxophones and 2 Tenor Saxophones. It would be a welcomed addition to any music library. This short composition, which lasts less than two minutes, will provide many students with the opportunity to practice breath control because of its long phrases, and to help them to continue to develop good intonation because many of the phrases cadence on a unison note. This selection could be performed for concerts, recitals and church services. It is suitable for high school and college students but professional musicians would also enjoy playing this selection. Included are a score and a complete set of parts (8 pages). This selection is one of the many arrangements from the Regis Bookshar Trumpet Ensemble’s extensive music library which are being made available for the first time. We have performed the Trumpet Quartet version of this composition for many church services, especially funerals, when we were asked to supply something more somber and introspective rather than the louder, more festive music which many people come to expect from a Trumpet Ensemble. Francesco Durante was an Italian composer who was born on March 31, 1684 at Frattamaggiore, in the Kingdom of Naples. At an early age he entered the Conservatorio dei poveri di Gesu Cristo, in Naples, where he received lessons from Gaetano Greco. Later he became a pupil of Alessandro Scarlatti at the Conservatorio di Sant’Onofrio. He is said to have succeeded Scarlatti in 1725 at Sant’Onofrio and to have remained there until 1742, when he succeeded Nicola Porpora as head of the Conservatorio di Santa Maria de Loreto, also in Naples. He held this post for thirteen years, until his death on September 30, 1755. His fame as a teacher was considerable, and, unlike his Neapolitan contemporaries, who attracted international notice with their operas, Francesco Durante achieved recognition through his church music, along with some vocal chamber and instrumental works. His concern was not quantity. A complete collection of Durante’s works, consisting almost exclusively of sacred music, was presented by Gaspare Selveggi, a Neapolitan art collector and music theorist, to the Bibliotheque Nationale in Paris. The imperial library of Vienna also preserves a valuable collection of Durante’s manuscripts. The fact that Durante never composed for the stage brought him an exaggerated reputation as a composer of sacred music. He was considered one of the best church composers of his style and period. In his masses, requiems, litanies and Lamentations, he could provide strong expressive moments, as he does in this “Kyrieâ€. In addition to this arrangement for a Saxophone Quartet, Regis Bookshar has also made other arrangements of this selection. There are Quartets readily available for a wide variety of instrumental ensembles. Please take the time to look for other versions of this composition. You may find something else that may also suit your needs. I would also encourage you to search for other arrangements by Regis Bookshar, as well, as there are numerous arrangements in a variety of styles, also available for purchase. You may find something else which might interest you. Please continue to check periodically because new arrangements are being added as often as possible. I’m certain that this beautiful arrangement of Francesco Durante’s “Kyrie†will continue to entertain both performers and audiences alike for years to come.

Saxophone quartet Alto Saxophone,Baritone Saxophone,Soprano Saxophone,Tenor Saxophone - Level 5 - Digital Download SKU: A0.764653 Composed by Gustav Holst (1874-1934). Arranged by James Pybus. 20th Century,Contemporary,Contest,Festival. 97 pages. James Pybus #36481. Published by James Pybus (A0.764653). In 1905 Gustav Holst became Director of Music at St. Paul’s Girls’ School in Hammersmith, London, a post which he retained right up until his death in 1934. St. Paul's Suite was written for the school’s string orchestra in 1912. The work is in four movements: a Jig, reminiscent of English fiddle tunes; a muted Ostinato (Presto); an Intermezzo which starts fairly slowly and softly, switching abruptly to a short Vivace section. The rhythmic tune here is based on an Arab song which Holst had noted in his sketchbook a few years earlier while on holiday in Algeria. After this brief interlude, the music returns to the slower opening tempo, and in the very last bars of the movement ‘the descending chromatic sixths are like a gesture of farewell to the good old days: never again did [Holst] indulge in such an unblushing display of nineteenth-century romanticism’--- these rather severe words are his daughter’s, quoted from her biography of her father. The Finale is framed around a familiar English folk tune (the Dargason), which, in the course of the movement, is used as a counter-melody to the even more familiar Greensleeves. Holst was evidently fond of this tune, as he also used it as the concluding movement of his well-known Suite No. 2 in F, Op. 28b for Military Band. Durations: 1. Jig 4:00; 2. Ostinato 1:28; 3. Intermezzo 3:41; 4. Finale (The Dargason) 4:00; Total time 13:09 I wrote this arrangement for SATB Saxophone Quartet in 2004, with revisions in 2015. It is a challenging yet ultimately rewarding piece for both audiences and players. contact me at james.pybus56@gmail.com.

Published by Forton Music - Digital (F2.FM135). ISBN 9790570480340.Saxophone Quartet SATB. One of Haydn's last string quartets arranged for saxophone quartet - the height of elegant and sophisticated writing for a small group of instruments. It takes its name from the second movement, in which Haydn uses the anthem 'God Save Emperor Francis' (which he wrote for Emperor Francis II) as the theme for a set of variations. This tune later became the German National Anthem, and is also well known as the melody for the hymn 'Glorious Things Of Thee Are Spoken'. In four movements, the first and last of which are extended compositions in sonata form. The second movement is the set of variations mentioned above, in which each instrument takes a turn at stating the tune, while the other instruments weave their variations round it. The third movement is a boisterous Minuett. An extended work, requiring neat playing from all musicians. The soprano part is particularly challenging, requiring nimble fingering and some rapid tonguing. The minuet and trio is easier but still rewarding. A chance for a sax quartet to try music from a different historical period.

La Waltz Triste is an original composition playable by either SATB or AATB Saxophone Quartet, both with an optional Bass Saxophone part which doubles the Baritone part. Performance time is 3:10. As the title would suggest, it has a rather sad and melancholic feel. Several events in my personal life of a tragic nature which occurred during the year it was written (2014) have subconsciously contributed to this feeling, including in May 2014 the loss of a friend and colleague, followed in September by the loss of my father-in-law. An ongoing health issue which began in April prevented me from playing and performing to the best of my ability. Thankfully this issue has resolved itself; there is a ray of hope for the future. Not wanting to wallow in self-pity, I look forward to more cheerful days ahead. Contact me at james.pybus56@gmail.com.

Arranged by Dennis Ruello. Christmas,Holiday,Renaissance,Standards,World. 8 pages. Chicory Music #5327015. Published by Chicory Music (A0.736656). The Boar's Head CarolThis Christmas carol talks about a feast during midwinter in which a wild boar was served as the main dish and its head placed in a situated position to symbolize bravery and abundance. Closely related to the Norse tradition of boar sacrifice to their goddess Freyja during the feast of Winter Solstice, this song originated from an urban legend in Queen's College, Oxford back in the 15th century which tells of how a scholar from Queen’s College managed to kill an attacking boar and offered it at dinner. The song was first published in English during the 1520’s in a book entitled Christmase Carolles Newly Emprynted at London in the flete street, which was written by Jan van Wynken de Worde. It is also said to be the very 1st Christmas carol to ever be publish in English because it dates back that early.Although the modern versions of the song makes no mention of Christmas, the original verses does so in The boar's head we bring with song, in worship of Him that thus sprung, of a Virgin to redress all wrong; NoelThis Intermediate Level arrangement starts out in Ab Major and modulates to Bb Major for the final chorus. Woods Only, Arrangements #1085834. Published by Woods Only, Arrangements (A0.1510633). If you are looking for a sheet music of an arrangement of Joy to the World for Sax Quartet, then you will love this version that we made, which brings a new look to this classic Christmas carol. Joy to the World is one of the most famous and oldest Christian songs, written by the poet, preacher, theologian and pedagogue Isaac Watts in 1719, based on Psalm 98 of the Bible. The melody that we know today was adapted by the American composer Lowell Mason in 1848, from a work by George Frideric Handel. In this arrangement, we have some fun with the melody, changing rhythms, harmonies and counterpoints, to give a new and magical air to the song, but without losing the essence of the original work. This arrangement is perfect for use in any Christmas event, such as chamber music in recitals, concerts, public shows, or as teaching material and incentive for music students. If you are looking for a sheet music of an arrangement of Joy to the World for Baritone Saxophone Quartet, then you will love this version that we made, which brings a new look to this classic Christmas carol. You will be amazed by the beauty and creativity of this arrangement, which will delight everyone who listens. Do not waste time and get your sheet music of Joy to the World, and be part of the history of this wonderful song.
