This relatively unknown overture is a gem and Marschner's overtures need reviving (check out Der Vampyr also available on sheetmusicplus.com). The parts are arranged so, if printed 2-sided, the page turns should come out manageable. I don't know much about the associated opera, but this overture is good enough be stand-alone.

I worked from the original manuscript, in the British Library, so the phrasing and articulations are as authentic as can be. I believe this work translates to woodwinds admirably, and in its original key. The composer said these quartets cost him great toil and mental exertion, and I can testify to the presence of frequent corrections in the MS, even though that which I saw was presumably a fair copy!

This arrangement of Silent Night, or in German, Stille Nacht, would be a wonderful addition to any music library and could be performed for Christmas concerts, recitals, and, especially, church services. It is equally suitable for junior and senior high school students and even older musicians. Depending on their ability, younger musicians would also enjoy playing this selection. Included are a score and a complete set of parts (7 pages). This selection is one of the many arrangements from The Regis Bookshar Trumpet Ensemble's extensive music library which are being made available for the first time.Silent Night is probably the most popular Christmas carol ever written. It was composed in 1818 by Franz Xaver Gruber to lyrics by Joseph Mohr and was first performed on Christmas Eve at St. Nicholas parish church in Oberndorf, a small village in present-day Austria. A young Catholic priest, Father Joseph Mohr, had written the poem, Stille Nacht, in 1816 and had gone to Oberndorf in 1817. The melody was composed by Franz Xaver Gruber, schoolmaster and organist in the nearby village of Arnsdorf. On Christmas Eve, 1818, Mohr brought the words to Gruber and asked him to compose a melody and guitar accompaniment for that night's mass, after river flooding had possibly damaged the church organ. The church was eventually destroyed by repeated flooding and has since been replaced with the Silent-Night-Chapel.According to Gruber, Karl Mauracher, an organ builder who serviced the instrument at the Oberndorf church, was enamored with the song, and took the composition home with him to the Ziller Valley in Tyrol, Austria. From there, two traveling families of folk singers, the Strassers and the Rainers, included the tune in their shows. The Rainers were already singing it around Christmas, 1819, and once performed it for an audience that included Franz I of Austria and Alexander I of Russia. They also gave the first performance of the song in the United States in New York City in 1839. By the 1840's, the song was well known and was reported to be a favorite of Frederick William IV of Prussia. During this period, the melody changed slightly to become the version that is commonly heard today. The version of the melody that is generally used today is a slow, meditative lullaby, or pastoral, differing slightly from Gruber's original which has a moderate tempo. The song has been translated into about 140 languages and has been recorded by many singers across many music genres. The version sung by Bing Crosby in 1935, has sold over 10 million copies as a single.In this arrangement of Silent Night, Regis Bookshar has kept the basic form of this familiar Christmas carol, but has also included a descant during the third verse. Also, in addition to this version for a Woodwind Quintet, consisting of 1 Flute, 1 Oboe, 1 Clarinet, 1 French Horn and 1 Bassoon, there are other arrangements of Silent Night available for a variety of instrumental ensembles. There are Quintets and Octets readily available for purchase. Please take the time to look for other versions of this composition. You may find something else that might also suit your needs.I would also encourage you to search for other arrangements by Regis Bookshar, as well, as there are numerous arrangements in a wide variety of styles, also available for purchase. From the first of these, D 111A, a trio Schubert wrote in 1814, only a few measures are extant. The string trio D 471 consists of a completed first movement and an incomplete second movement, composed in 1816. The last of these trios, D 581, was completed in four movements, exists in two versions and was composed in 1817. This is an arrangement for standard wind quintet of the 1st mvt of D471 The horn part is for NATURAL HORN in Bb basso (Alt Horn in F provided).

Faure’s piano duet entitled Dolly Suite is here arranged by Philip Le Bas for a wind sextet, consisting of a standard wind quintet (flute, oboe, clarinet, horn and bassoon) plus bass clarinet. The bass clarinet gives the music more sonority and it allows the arranger more opportunity to bring out Faure’s sumptuous harmonies. Dolly was the nickname of the baby daughter of Emma Bardac, with whom Faure had a long-running affair, and each of the pieces has a slightly different association with childhood.1) The Berceuse (lullaby) is best remembered as the theme tune to the BBC’s Listen with Mother, and its tune is indelibly marked into the memories of generations of radio listeners between 1950 and 1982. It was written for Dolly’s first birthday. (An alternative part for clarinet in A is available for this movement, to avoid the otherwise slightly tricky key signature of F sharp major!)2) Mi-a-ou has nothing to do with cats, but is a version of Dolly’s first attempts to pronounce the name of her brother Raoul. Written for her second birthday, it is a delicate and playful scherzo with lots of cross-rhythms for the instruments.3) Le Jardin de Dolly is regarded by some as the best piece in the collection, with its gorgeous tune and unexpected harmonies, creating an impressionistic picture of a beautiful, peaceful French garden.4) Kitty-Valse again has nothing to do with cats but with the family dog Ketty, who whirls round and round, in unrelenting cheerfulness.5) In Tendresse Faure introduces more chromatic harmonies, used in his later works. As its name and its key of D flat suggests, the music here seems to express deep and shifting emotions associated with intimate relationships, while retaining a sense of calm and comfort throughout.6) The last piece, Le Pas Espagnole is a thrilling journey across the border into the exotic Spanish world of dance. There is much in common with Chabrier’s Espana, and here the wind players can enjoy playing at full tilt in an exciting and tuneful end to the suite.

Originally forming part of de Falla's opera La Vida Breve (Life is short), it is fully of colour and excitement from the opening four bars, through the archetypically Spanish rhythms and tunes of the main dance, climaxing in the central fortissimo section which is stamped out by the invisible singers, and returning with even more colour to the original theme.

This six movement suite was composed between 1700 and 1750 - most likely near to the beginning of the 18th century when Telemann was using older style titles for the 6 movements - Overture, Chasse, Menuet, La Toye, Sarabande and Loure. Telemann did not indicate any dynamics, instead relying on contrasting pairs of players and the full ensemble. Advanced intermediate players will enjoy the well contrasted, mostly lively movements. Horn players may prefer to transpose some passages down an octave. Some trills have been added and dashed slurs to match the few indicated in the original set of parts. The Suite is very likely to have been performed at outside and inside events and the mode of performance adapted accordingly.

Arranged wind quintetThis music was originally attributed to Giovanni Pergolesi, as they were so described in a Mr R. Bremner's original 1780 London publication. They were also arranged later by Hugo Riemann, and were again wrongly attributed to Giovanni Pergolesi.It is actually the 1st movement of Domenico Gallo's 1st Trio Sonata in G.It was used by Igor Stravinsky as a basis of the first movement (Sinfonia) of his Neo Classical Ballet Pulcinella.The Pulcinella Suite for small chamber orchestra and 3 vocalists which was derived from the ballet, was written in 1922 and has no vocal parts. This is the original music he used as the basis of the Sinfonia.But even though Stravinsky used Gallo's (Pergolesi's) melodies and bass lines with little change, he managed to put his own unmistakable stamp on the music through his use of modern harmonies and occasional rhythmic modifications.My arrangement is of the the original Gallo piece:The only change I have made is to move the bar lines so that my piece starts, as does Stravinsky's, with a quaver pickup, rather than Gallo's half bar and a quaver pickup.My arrangement is entirely in 4/4 using Gallo's classical/baroque harmonies.It does not sound too dissimilar to Stravinsky's which sadly will be in copyright for many years.
