This is my arrangement of Gustav Holst's arrangement.It is arranged for wind quintetThe French composer Marin Marais composed the tune as a dance for his opera Alcyone of 1706, with the title Marche pour les Matelots.The tune was subsequently included in Raoul Auger Feuillet's 1706 Recueil de contredansealong with a longways proper dance, La Matelotte, which Feuillet had himself written to go with the tune.In 1710 John Essex (d. 1744) published an English translation of Feuillet's work called, For the Further Improvement of Dancing, in which the dance is given as The Female Saylor.The words were written around 1860 while William Morris, then 26, was working as an apprentice in the office of the architect, Edmund Street, presumably under the persuasion of his fellow students who at that time had a taste for part-song. It became known as the Christmas Carol Masters in This Hall (alternative title: Nowell, Sing We Clear) Gustav Holst incorporated the carol into his work Three Carols H133 (1916–17) along with Christmas Song: On this Day and I Saw Three Ships. Holst wrote the Three Carols for amateurs singing in his Thaxted festivals.You can check out my arrangemet of this and other Marin Marais compositions here.

The Huron Carol (or ‘Twas in the Moon of Wintertime) is a Canadian Christmas hymn (Canada's oldest Christmas song), written probably in 1643 by Jean de Brébeuf, a Jesuit missionary at Sainte-Marie among the Hurons in Canada. Brébeuf wrote the lyrics in the native language of the Huron/Wendat people; the song's original Huron title is Jesous Ahatonhia (Jesus, he is born). The song's melody is based on a traditional French folk song, Une Jeune Pucelle (A Young Maid). The well-known English lyrics were written in1926 by Jesse Edgar Middleton. This woodwind quintet arrangement turns the traditional French carol Patapan into a Patapan Fantasy, which also includes quotes from the carols God Rest Ye Merry, Gentlemen, Joy to the World, O Come, O Come, Emmanuel, We Three Kings of Orient Are, and Good King Wenceslas, representing carols from England, France, the Czech Republic, and the United States. It is perfect for all holiday events, gatherings, recitals, or caroling gigs. The arrangement was written for most ensembles, from advanced high school quintets to college ensembles to professional quintets. What appealed to me most about this piece was that it's pitched in a minor key, making it slightly different from most Christmas carols. The lyrics are similar to The Little Drummer Boy: When you hear the fife and drum, dance and make the village hum. I have included an alternate bass clarinet part in lieu of a missing bassoon. Originally scored for piano, I hope you enjoy this unique setting for winds. If you like this arrangement, you might also like my woodwind quintet arrangement of the 16thC Spanish carol Riu Riu Chiu. Un Flambeau, Jeanette, Isabelle! is a Provençal Christmas song from the 17th century. This song was first published in 1553 in France. The music is attributed to Nicolas Saboly and the text to Émile Blémont. The song tells the story of two farmers, Jeannette and Isabelle, who are going to milk their cows in a crib in Bethlehem, and find Jesus sleeping in hay. The two women run to Bethlehem to announce to the inhabitants the coming of Christ and the inhabitants come with their torches to see this for themselves. The painter Georges de La Tour painted a Nativity called The Newborn Inspired by the Song. Originally, the song was not a Christmas song but a dance song for the nobles. Little known in France today, it is most often interpreted by Anglo-Saxons on the occasion of the Christmas holidays, especially in the United States. The English version is entitled Bring a torch, Jeanette, Isabella!. This arrangement for wind quintet (in the key of Bb) has 5 verses (with different arrangements) There is a bridge passage at the start, end and between each verse. It was composed in 1818 by Franz Xaver Gruber to lyrics by Joseph Mohr and was first performed on Christmas Eve at St. Nicholas parish church in Oberndorf, a small village in present-day Austria. A young Catholic priest, Father Joseph Mohr, had written the poem, Stille Nacht, in 1816 and had gone to Oberndorf in 1817. The melody was composed by Franz Xaver Gruber, schoolmaster and organist in the nearby village of Arnsdorf. On Christmas Eve, 1818, Mohr brought the words to Gruber and asked him to compose a melody and guitar accompaniment for that night's mass, after river flooding had possibly damaged the church organ. The church was eventually destroyed by repeated flooding and has since been replaced with the Silent-Night-Chapel.According to Gruber, Karl Mauracher, an organ builder who serviced the instrument at the Oberndorf church, was enamored with the song, and took the composition home with him to the Ziller Valley in Tyrol, Austria. From there, two traveling families of folk singers, the Strassers and the Rainers, included the tune in their shows. The Rainers were already singing it around Christmas, 1819, and once performed it for an audience that included Franz I of Austria and Alexander I of Russia. They also gave the first performance of the song in the United States in New York City in 1839. By the 1840's, the song was well known and was reported to be a favorite of Frederick William IV of Prussia. During this period, the melody changed slightly to become the version that is commonly heard today. The version of the melody that is generally used today is a slow, meditative lullaby, or pastoral, differing slightly from Gruber's original which has a moderate tempo. The song has been translated into about 140 languages and has been recorded by many singers across many music genres. The version sung by Bing Crosby in 1935, has sold over 10 million copies as a single.In this arrangement of Silent Night, Regis Bookshar has kept the basic form of this familiar Christmas carol, but has also included a descant during the third verse.
