Published by Phil Thrift (A0.955719). H.P. Takes Five is a cheeky take on Henry Purcell’s famous trumpet tune. Instead of 4/4 time, it’s in 5/4, with a few 7/4 measures thrown in for a bit more fun! Purcell (1659–95) wrote much incidental music for plays and so-called semi-operas performed in London’s theaters, and often included a trumpet tune as a signal for the next act. A trumpet was the only instrument that could be heard above the noise of the audience! This is the wind quintet adaptation of the arrangement originally written for brass quintet. The lead moves around the parts and so this is indicated to make sure that the appropriate line remains prominent. Pay attention to all the tenuto and staccato marks. Make sure that the ff in measures 26, 42, 52, and at the end are as loud as you can get them without overblowing. The fluid lines of the lyrical middle section will test your powers of concentration.

H.M.S. Pinafore; or, The Lass That Loved a Sailor is a comic opera in two acts, with music by Arthur Sullivan and a libretto by W. S. Gilbert. It opened at the Opera Comique in London, on 25 May 1878 and ran for 571 performances, which was the second-longest run of any musical theatre piece up to that time. H.M.S. Pinafore was Gilbert and Sullivan's fourth operatic collaboration and their first international sensation.

For the medieval man, convivial drinking was a part of life, and drinks were enjoyed with nearly every meal. The English beverage of choice was ale. This is my arrangement of Gustav Holst's arrangement.It is arranged for wind quintetThe French composer Marin Marais composed the tune as a dance for his opera Alcyone of 1706, with the title Marche pour les Matelots.The tune was subsequently included in Raoul Auger Feuillet's 1706 Recueil de contredansealong with a longways proper dance, La Matelotte, which Feuillet had himself written to go with the tune.In 1710 John Essex (d. 1744) published an English translation of Feuillet's work called, For the Further Improvement of Dancing, in which the dance is given as The Female Saylor.The words were written around 1860 while William Morris, then 26, was working as an apprentice in the office of the architect, Edmund Street, presumably under the persuasion of his fellow students who at that time had a taste for part-song. It became known as the Christmas Carol Masters in This Hall (alternative title: Nowell, Sing We Clear) Gustav Holst incorporated the carol into his work Three Carols H133 (1916–17) along with Christmas Song: On this Day and I Saw Three Ships. This brilliant work by Johann Sebastian Bach is an adaptation of Antonio Vivaldi's Concerto for Four Violins and String Orchestra in B minor. Bach had gotten to know Vivaldi's concertos while he was an organist at Weimar, where he transcribed ten of them for solo harpsichord and six of them for organ. Originally written in B minor, Bach transposed it to A minor and, while preserving the melodic outline as conceived by Vivaldi for four violins, this later adaptation, from around 1730, for four harpsichords and string orchestra, is far more ambitious. In it, Bach has both tightened and expanded Vivaldi's counterpoint, enriched it with lusher harmonies and expanded the solo parts with greater complexity and greater clarity. The result is a composition that actually improves on the original work. Written in the standard three-movement concerto form of the Baroque period, Bach's Concerto for Four Claviers in A minor is a virtuoso piece for the soloists. Regis Bookshar has now rearranged the first movement of this concerto, marked Allegro, for a Woodwind Quintet, consisting of 1 Flute, 1 Oboe, 1 Clarinet, 1 French Horn and 1 Bassoon, while maintaining the energy and virtuosity of Bach's original work. This arrangement is intended to be performed by accomplished players and may prove to be a huge challenge for many players, but, I think, it will be worth the effort. A lovely quartet for flute, oboe, Bb clarinet, and bassoon written in the style of Renaissance counterpoint. 3 page score (1 page parts), about 2 minutes in duration.  This was written while I was studying 16th Century counterpoint, and I thought it was so nice I arranged it for woodwind quartet. Do to the nature of the style, each part has only about an octave range, there's only a few accidentals, and the rhythms aren't too complicated. The main challenges for the less advanced musician would be the slow pace in 4/2 time and the long flowing phrases.

Born in Hanover into a musical family he spent his early years as a professional musician, composer, and conductor in England. This arrangement for woodwind quintet is based on the delicate slow movement from his orchestral symphony number 20, written in 1763. Hershel's music is described as either late Baroque or pre-classical. This three minute arrangement is well suited for students new to woodwind quintet music as well as for a relaxing interlude as part of a more advanced program.
