Originally for chamber orchestra, Oot-kwa-tah is dedicated to SUNY Schenectady County Community College on the forty-fifth anniversary of the college’s establishment as part of the State University of New York. The college sits on land that was once part of the Mohawk nation of the Iroquois Confederacy. Oot-kwa-tah is inspired by the Iroquois legend of M45, the Pleiades star cluster. The Iroquois tell a story about seven children who met each day and danced for hours at a time instead of doing chores. An old man appeared to them one day as they danced. He shone magnificently like silver and was clad from head to toe in brilliant white feathers. The old man warned them to stop dancing lest something terrible happen to them. Ignoring the old man’s warning and growing more and more hungry and lightheaded the children began to rise into the air. If only they had listened to me, the old man thought. As the children’s parents gathered, one little boy heard his father’s voice below. The little boy looked down and saw his father. At that instant he fell back to earth. The other children continued to float higher and higher into the sky to become the Pleiades star cluster. The Iroquois call them Oot-kwa-tah and are reminded of these reckless children each time they see a falling star. Duration: 5:00

Famous for his orchestral work The Planets, he wrote Christmas Day for his students at an English school to be performed by voices and orchestra during the holiday season. Several familiar Christmas carols are arranged so that two or three may be heard at the same time. The effect of Holst’s polyphonic treatment becomes even more transparent in the instrumentation provided here. What appealed to me most about this piece was that it's pitched in a minor key, making it slightly different from most Christmas carols. Here is a compelling setting of Martin Luther’s hymn A Mighty Fortress Is Our God (EIN FESTE BURG) by Johann Pachelbel (1653-1750). Originally composed for organ, it has been arranged for Woodwind Quintet with optional keyboard. Two harmonizations of the isometric version of the hymn are also provided. The first is a standard harmonization found in many hymnals. The second is based on the concluding Chorale of Cantata 80 by Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750). Including the music of both Bach and Pachelbel, this arrangement serves as an excellent introduction to the music of the Baroque era and the contributions of great Lutheran composers. It also provides opportunities to discuss the time of the Reformation. For worship the arrangement can be played alone or it can be used to accompany congregational singing.
