These sonatas for piano solo explore these deeper meanings in a variety of contemporary musical influences, while keeping in mind the acoustics of small rural churches of the late nineteenth century, with wooden floors and walls, high ceilings, and dimensions determined by local builders who knew how to shape a room for excellent acoustics in an age of no electricity and no microphones. These sonatas are but partly about the specific melodies and words, and mostly about their meaning in spiritual contemplation . . . and the piano, resonating, reverberant, sometimes whispering---as a sacred harp. Although these sonatas have no specific titles, the first sonata may be thought of as the Prayer Sonata, the second as the Travel Sonata, as in a spiritual journey, and the third sonata is about our greatest fear, that of being alone and without God. Performance Note The pianist must keep in mind that these sonatas are about playing the piano as much as playing a composition. Musical effects characteristic of the piano and descriptive of the memory in American culture are the substances of these piano solos. Touch is important: in many places, several dynamics are called for on the same beat. All three pedals on an American piano (damper, sostenuto, and sustain) are needed. The orchestral and cinematic structure of this music requires extensive use of three staffs, which may consist of two treble and one bass staff, or one treble and two bass staffs. In basic grand-staff passages, the two staffs may both be treble or both bass. The musical influences in these sonatas include religious song in rural America, the chromaticism and Expressionism of Arnold Schoenberg and his followers, and the tone colors of the music of Japanese composer Toru Takemitsu.DurationsSonata Hymnica No. 1 --- 15 minutes.Sonata Hymnica No. 2 --- 11 minutes. Siddons has also studied theology and liturgy at the Duke University Divinity School. In addition to books and articles on contemporary music and music in Japan, Siddons was written compositions in many genres. Sonata Hymnica No. 3 draws on two melodies from the African-American experience. One, Were You There (When They Crucified My Lord)? was first published in 1899 in W. E. Barton’s Old Plantation Hymns but existed earlier as a folk hymn. It became the first spiritual to be included in a major hymnal, The Hymnal 1940 of the Episcopal Church in the U.S.A. Sometimes I Feel Like a Motherless Child was sung by the Jubilee Singers of Fisk University from 1870 on, and was published in the Rev. Dr. Barton’s Old Plantation Hymns in 1899. Performance Note The pianist must keep in mind that these sonatas are about playing the piano as much as playing a composition. Published by Gordon Cherry (A0.792223). The Sonatina for Trombone & Piano was originally published after its composition, but soon became lost. It has recently been brought back into the repertoire. Cherry Classics Music is proud to be bringing this very fine work back to life. The style of this 3 movement work is similar to the well known Sonatina for Trombone and Piano by Serocki. Miroslav Krejci was born on the 4th of November, 1891 in Rychnov nad Kn??nou (a small town situated in the eastern part of Bohemia of the Czech Republic). There, he also attended high school. After graduation he travelled to Prague, studying natural science, geography and musicology at Charles University. At the Conservatory he studied composition under Vitezslav Novak. Krejci also became a teacher at a few grammar schools in the Czech republic. He died on the 29th of December 1964 in Prague. Miroslav Krejci created music for many various ensembles and his compositions are among the most prolific of Czech composers. For example, he composed the following: two Operas: The Summer and The Last Hetman, two Symphonies, string quartets, sonatas for violins, trios for wind instruments, sonatinas for brasswind instruments and piano and five piano cycles. He wrote many vocal compositions, especially for chorus. Krejci also created many arrangements of folk songs for chorus and for solo voice with piano accompaniment. The Sonatina for Trombone and Piano was composed in 1948. It was first performed on the occasion of the composer's birthday.

Psalm 1 by Heinrich Schütz (1585-1672), is taken from his collection of choral settings of several of the biblical Psalms of David, in which Schütz continued the polychoral tradition he had absorbed in Venice as a student of Giovanni Gabrieli. Schütz indicated in his preface to the Psalms, published in 1619, that due to limits on performance during the Thirty Years War, alternate instruments or voices could be employed as available. As Psalm 1 was composed for two choirs of voices, it might be an attractive option to double the parts in this version for brass. Also, the choirs might be placed some distance apart. The original version of Psalm I is for two four-part choirs, one of mixed voices and one of tenors and basses. (The original also calls for continuo accompaniment, but, as in similar works of Gabrieli, the choral parts sound complete in themselves.) Composer/arranger David Fetter (b. 1938) is a Trombone faculty member at the Peabody Conservatory of the Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Maryland. Also a conductor, his works are performed in concert, at festivals, and in educational settings in the U.S. and Europe and they have been recorded by leading soloists. Mr. Fetter is a former member of the Cleveland Orchestra, the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra, the Radio/Telefis Symphony Orchestra of Ireland, the U.S. Army Band, and other ensembles, where he performed for conductors who included George Szell, Leonard Bernstein, Seiji Ozawa, James Levine, Sergiu Comissiona, and David Zinman. At the Eastman School of Music he was a trombone student of Emory Remington and a member of the Eastman Wind Ensemble under Frederick Fennell. Ultimately, music won out and Schumann began studying piano with Friedrich Wieck, whose daughter Clara was later to become Schumann’s wife. After damage to one hand affected his playing ability, Schumann turned his attention to musicology and composition. Träumerei (Dreaming) has been described as one of the most famous piano works ever written. It is one of a collection of short pieces, entitled Kinderscenen (Scenes from Childhood) written in 1838. This arrangement for mixed woodwind duo of clarinet and bassoon would make a charming feature piece at a wedding, anniversary or recital.
