This is an educational piece for Directors or Drama Teachers in education or the Performing Arts. Set in Heaven, Broken Doll tells the story of a group of recently deceased young women looking down on a teenage girl who is contemplating suicide. They are not told why and the role of the group is to persuade the girl's Spirit, to return to its host. There are a wide range of characters within the piece and although they all have one thing in common, (they are all female), their outlooks and life experiences are naturally all very different and each has an opinion on the cause of the young girl's demeanour and to come up with with a proposition on how to save the girlâ€™s life. This is presented through the music and dialogue. Vocally the cast will have different capabilities and timbres.This diversity of styles in characters and the memorable musical content should appeal to teenagers as well as family members. The stage set is very basic, making the overall cost much lower, allowing it to be performed anywhere with a suitable space. It also has the potential to be filmed and the subsequent DVD could then be made available to anyone working with young people. All the necessary advice, information and useful contacts, should be provided in the programme notes. The life of Fitch was so remarkable and has so much to teach us about the illusory America in which so many of us believe that it would make for a riveting motion picture if the novel could be turned into a film script. It would be lovely if the music could be used in such a motion picture project, but I doubt it will ever come to that. I rather think I'll end up pretty much like my Uncle John (Fitch really was my fifth great grandmother's brother) - broken and impecunious after a life of trying passionately to accomplish something worthwhile. The bitter irony is that Fitch's talent did lie in an eminently practical field, as steam-powered transportation and technology was cutting edge by the early nineteenth century when people like Robert Fulton profited handsomely from Uncle John's ideas. But Fitch was a visionary whose work far exceeded the narrow perceptions and self-interest of his countrymen - including such founding fathers as Franklin and Jefferson! Sadly, John Fitch intentionally -or perhaps accidentally -committed suicide by overdosing on an opium-based pain medication which, in combination with his drinking, proved to be fatal.

Of course I did learn that it would take a long time to Â nd those few that would resonate with me for a lifetime, but it was always fun trying them all out.Â It still is, in fact.Â Well, times change and people change, but Iâ€™d still like to believe that same factor carries on. You know, the one about trying out all that music to get to the few you keep. And what about the few we do keep? For guitar players, was it always a classic from the usual suspects, like Albeniz, Sor, Tarrega,, Granados, Rodrigo, Brouwer, Barrios, Villa-Lobos, or anything by Bach?Was it something our band director or private instructor, one of our friends, or our parents wrote? Or â€“ Heaven forbid- something that maybe we ourselves wrote?Â Or some â€œunknown guy.â€Â Consider this.Just how often did some unknown composer's piece greatly affect us as we waded through a daunting pile of the familiar from the known masters? And since some, if not most of these classics are required reading, how often did we even get around to giving this unknown guy's piece a try?And furthermore, was this unknown guy - shudder...alive?Â Letâ€™s face it. In the composer arena, we the living, stand no chance against the deceased (God rest their souls) But by saying â€œthey donâ€™t write â€˜em like that anymore,â€ are we denying ourselves new ground to be broken, doors to be opened, frontiers to be discovered?Â And isnâ€™t that pioneering spirit just plain olâ€™ curiosity when it comes right down to it?Â Well I believe the key lies within the carrying out of these notions that curiosity places in us. Itâ€™s climbing the mountain simply because it is there.Â So, for right now, Iâ€™m that unknown guy and I would only urge you to break new ground every day. Lots of trends, ideas, and interests will come and go in your life, but always hang on to that curiosity.Â Itâ€™s what makes the world a smaller neighborhood.Â Larry Williams.

The original song tells the story of a group of lads and lassies (men and women) as they take a day trip from the city of Newcastle to the nearby race course in Blaydon. They have mishaps along the way - a wheel falls off and someone gets a broken nose. This instrumental arrangement portrays the jollity of the trip and has some lurching key changes to mimic the bumpy and chaotic journey. This song was written in 1862 but is still sung by the people of the north east of England who treat is as an unofficial local national anthem. It is a sung in bars, at sports matches and is the Regimental Song of TheÂ Royal Regiment of Fusiliers. Have fun playing it!

Published by Lyons Music Services (A0.1119919). Festival:(Time 7:05) This is an original, previously unpublished piece, composed specifically for the ICF festival 2022. It is a programmatic piece in 3 sections, with each section being a description of some aspect of the word Festival. I have taken the broadest definition of the word festival to give as much scope for variety as possible.Â The first section opens with â€˜sunriseâ€™ on the day of the festival, shown by long-held open fourth chords, with the snapping of the violin pizzicatos (perhaps) being the rattle of tent lines/guys. The bass clarinet solo then shows people waking up and stretching, yawning and just before Letter A, the descending figures throughout the ensemble bring us all together to start the festival. From Letter A, one sets off at a marching pace through the crowds. We hear a mish-mash of vendorsâ€™ calls overlaying each other, repeating variations of the same motif and this little tune develops as it moves around the festival site, sometimes loud and sometimes faint. At some point, of course, arguments break out (e.g. Letter B between the strings and brass), but generally, the mood is business-like. At Letter C, there comes a parade of minstrels through the field which eventually fades off into the distance. At Letter D, we look at a different kind of festival. Not necessarily religious, but certainly spiritual. The harp and bell sounds evoke far-eastern temples while the string harmonics evoke an eerie stillness which is broken only by the melodic fragments (based on the 4ths of the first section) which pass around the orchestra. The theme is first heard on the Cor Anglais (echoed by the harp) which gives it a warmer, less piercing, sound than the oboe. The quartal chords at b.149 denote the vast mysteries of the cosmos. As our gaze widens, we are suddenly brought back to Earth with a rush as yet another kind of festival is evoked. This time we are looking briefly at the Indian subcontinent. Where fakirs charm snakes and young boys climb ropes only to disappear. The third and final section returns us to the British Isles, where the Celts are making merry in a festival. There is dancing, singing, feasting and drinking a-plenty. And, just when you think itâ€™s all over, thereâ€™s a final push to get another dance going. The final chords are a reminder of the opening as we finish our revels as the sun descends below the horizon in a beautiful sunset.
