Bernard Alt was born in 1903 in Silesia and was violinist in the Berlin Philharmonic from 1928 until his suicide in February 1945. His tenure in Berlin coincided almost exactly with that of Wilhelm Fürtwangler. Beginning in 1932 Alt experimented with the double bass quartet first with an arrangement of Edvard Grieg’s popular melody Kobold, followed by a suite which, when published, became one of the classics of the bass quartet repertoire. In the now 65 year long chronology of the bass quartet, this piece stands as the earliest original music written for the ensemble.

The clarinet quartet arrangement of Break Forth, O Beauteous, Heavenly Light, was made for the 2018 Holiday Contest Entry. Martin Luther developed the Lutheran chorale, a religious hymn sung in four-part harmony by the congregation as part of the service. Break Forth, O Beauteous, Heavenly Light was written by Johann Rist and Johann Schop in the mid-17th century, so that by 1734, when Bach included it in his Christmas Oratorio, it was well known to congregations. The harmonization, however, is Bach ‘s own. The arrangement remains faithful to the original facsimile of Bach. It is transposed for a modern clarinet quartet. Variations in loudness and the duration of musical notes are the basic elements to musical expression. A few interpretation symbols where added to shorten some of the notes. Breathing between music phrases is notated. and the final was stretched with one more bar for a ralentando effect. This details are only suggestions for an interpretation. The piece is appropriate for beginner students or amateurs and without any doubt very pleasant to listen when played by an experienced ensemble. It can be used in concerts and all sorts of spiritual or religious events. Thank you very much for taking your time to read this text and to listen to the file. It has a dance like structure and a nostalgic character, it can be played faster or slower, and it is easy to learn. Due to the timeless and universal nature of the piece, you can perform it in all kinds of events. I wish you a lot of fun and a great success. The cantata „Gottes Zeit ist die allerbeste Zeit, BWV 106- „God`s Time Is The Very Best Time, ranks among Bach's most important works. It is a work of genius such as even great masters seldom achieve. The Actus tragicus belongs to the great musical literature of the world. Although Bach's manuscript is lost, the work is agreed to be one of the earliest Bach cantatas, probably composed during the year he spent in Mühlhausen 1707/1708 as organist of theDivi Blasil church, at the age of 22. Various funerals known to have taken place at this time have been proposed as the occasion for the composition, for example that of his uncle Tobias Lämmerhirt from his mother's family, who died inErfurt on 10 August 1707, and that of Adolph Strecker, a former mayor of Mühlhausen, whose funeral was 16 September 1708. The earliest surviving manuscript, in the hand of Christian Friedrich Penzel, was copied in 1768 after Bach's death. It introduced the title Actus tragicus. The cantata was published in 1876 as part of the first complete edition of Bach's works: the Bach-Gesellschaft-Ausgabe, edited by Wilhelm Rust. The text consists of different Bible passages from the Old and New Testament, as well as individual verses of hymns by Martin Lither and Adam Reusner, which all together refer to finiteness, preparation for death and dying. The Arrangement is relatively easy to perform, also appropriate for beginners. It is an ideal piece for advanced performers, this music touches deep into the Soul. The piece was arranged for modern instruments, I introduced some embellishments and interpretation symbols thus shortening the length of some notes, but no notes where otherwise changed or omitted in this arrangement. Also the original placement of the voices is totally respected, the structure of the piece was simply left as it was composed in its original form. Bach scored the instrumental parts for a small ensemble of Baroque instruments two recorders, two violas da gamba and continuo. I propose an interpretation for a modern string orquestra or a string quintet in this arrangement. If the orquestra only has one double bass I would recommend you to reenforce the bass with a cello. It can be very well performed by a „string quintet- a string quartet with a double bass. Have fun! Luis Anjos Teixeira #4736137. Published by Luis Anjos Teixeira (A0.889432). I found this Passacaglia from Bach among some of my own handwritten manuscripts. It is a phenomenal piece. Bach was definitive a great artist, a Genius. Passacaglia is an Italian word. This music form was originated in early 17th-century Spain as a strummed interlude between instrumentally accompanied dances or songs. In this piece we can clearly experience this „Spanish strumming between „Bars 137 and 145. The passacaglia was redefined in the late 1620s by Italian composer Girolamo Frescobaldi, who transformed it into a series of continuous variations over an ostinato bass pattern (which itself may be varied). I added to this piece some interpretation symbols and rearranged it for the harp but every single note was left as it would be found in the original version. The piece is appropriate for advanced performers. Most of the score is left to the interpretation of the artists involved, particularly the use of fingering. The piece is difficult but very Human. It requires focused endurance and some practice on certain passages. Once learned you will also be playing much better. Found in several late-16th-century and early 17th-century sources and preserved at the University of Cambridge. Christmas and New Year texts were associated with the tune from as early as 1686. The tune is contained in several of Dowland’s lute manuscripts; in William Ballet’s Lute Book; in Sir John Hawkins’ transcripts of virginal music; in The Dancing Master; The Beggar’s Opera; and in many other books. The earliest known source of the tune -Trinity College, Dublin ms. D. I.21, c. 1580 - known as William Ballet's lute book- gives the tune in the melodic minor scale. Greensleeves is also often played in a natural minor scale and in the Dorian Mode. This arrangement is inspired on the transcripts of virginal music from Sir John Hawkins’. The piece is appropriate for beginner students or amateurs and without any doubt very pleasant to listen when played by an experienced ensemble. So I decided to publish the work. It has a dance like structure and a nostalgic character, it can be played faster or slower and it is easy to learn. The melodic bass played with the left hand demands a little bit of coordination but the arrangement is focused in the main melody and is very easy to perform in all this 3 versions. Luis Anjos Teixeira „Now comes the Little Story The Volcano`s Lake was composed on a volcano called Pico that stands out about 2000 meters above see level right in the middle of the Atlantic ocean. From the bottom of the ocean to its pick it is higher than mount Everest. I like to know that there are an enormous amount of different species of whales that live in this area and many others that go there strictly for romance. I went there to perform with the harp but was at the same time deeply morning the death of my Dear Cat Mary Jane that tragically passed away the day before the flight. In this isle I was having at night strange dreams of epic battles and fights between flying Angels and Demons. In one of these dreams „Time and Matter were a byproduct of „Music itself. The wind was blowing, the volcano was dancing and the water on the lake was whispering enchanting melodies. As soon as I woke up I wrote some notes before they vanished away, just a fragment of an idea of what I was listening in the dream. I named it „The Volcano`s Lake, because the „Lake was comforting me with its melodies, I realized that my tears were also becoming the lake itself and in this lake I was becoming one with Mary Jane and all the rest of the Universe. I Had Much Grief, Cantata BWV 21. „Ich hatte viel Bekümmernis, BWV 21. „Sinfonia This work marks a transition between motet style on biblical and hymn text to operatic recitatives and arias on contemporary poetry. Bach catalogued the work as „e per ogni tempo „and for all times, indicating that due to its general theme, the cantata is suited for any occasion. With its distinctive gesture of descent and the plaintive lines of the oboe and violin, the Sinfonia, held in dark minor, sets a tone of pain that is characteristic of the cantata. With its emotional depth and formal wealth, the cantata I had much grief is almost a solitaire in Bach's church music. Performed in Weimar in 1714 and later rearranged several times, it is also suitable as a compositional business card due to its high standards and its shape, which is representative of various types of sentences, and could therefore be related to Bach's application. Bach performed the cantata on 17 June 1714, as his fourth work in a series of monthly cantatas for the Weimar court which came with his promotion to concert master. The Work was transposed to D minor during the Köthen years, and used in November 1720 for a performance in Hamburg to apply for the position as organist at St. Jacobi. As Thomaskantor in Leipzig, Bach performed the cantata again on his third Sunday in office on 13 June 1723. For this performance, he also changed the instrumentation, adding „for example four trombones to double the voices in the fifth stanza of the hymn. This version was used in several revivals during Bach's lifetime and is mostly performed today. From the plaintive sinfonia to the arias and duets touching in their pain and charm to the speaking rhythmic psalm and chorus choirs, a development arc spans that transforms suffering and grief into consolation and trust and culminates in an apotheosis reminiscent of Handel of the victorious lamb, Hardly ever has Bach put the process of a relentless self-questioning and spiritual healing as convincingly as here. This arrangement of the sinfonia is intended for modern instruments. The original score was translated into modern music literature standards thus simplifying the approach and helping to understand the legacy of baroque music in our modern times. A few embellishments and interpretation symbols where added thus mostly shortening the length of some notes. Some „fortes and „pianos are also included. The arrangement is absolutely faithful to Bach`s versions, not adding or omitting any notes from the original sources. P.S.- The score was written on Finale. The cantata „Gottes Zeit ist die allerbeste Zeit, BWV 106- „God`s Time Is The Very Best Time, ranks among Bach's most important works. It is a work of genius such as even great masters seldom achieve. The Actus tragicus belongs to the great musical literature of the world. Although Bach's manuscript is lost, the work is agreed to be one of the earliest Bach cantatas, probably composed during the year he spent in Mühlhausen 1707/1708 as organist of the Divi Blasil church, at the age of 22. Various funerals known to have taken place at this time have been proposed as the occasion for the composition, for example that of his uncle Tobias Lämmerhirt from his mother's family, who died inErfurt on 10 August 1707, and that of Adolph Strecker, a former mayor of Mühlhausen, whose funeral was 16 September 1708. The earliest surviving manuscript, in the hand of Christian Friedrich Penzel, was copied in 1768 after Bach's death. It introduced the title Actus tragicus. The cantata was published in 1876 as part of the first complete edition of Bach's works: the Bach-Gesellschaft-Ausgabe, edited by Wilhelm Rust. The text consists of different Bible passages from the Old and New Testament, as well as individual verses of hymns by Martin Lither and Adam Reusner, which all together refer to finiteness, preparation for death and dying. The Arrangement is relatively easy to perform, also appropriate for beginners. It is an ideal piece for advanced performers, this music touches deep into the Soul. The piece was arranged for modern instruments, I introduced some embellishments and interpretation symbols thus shortening the length of some notes, but no notes where otherwise changed or omitted in this arrangement. Also the original placement of the voices is totally respected, the structure of the piece was simply left as it was composed in its original form. Bach scored the instrumental parts for a small ensemble of Baroque instruments two recorders, two violas da gamba and continuo. I propose an interpretation for a modern woodwind quintet in this arrangement. You should feel Free to apply in this piece the Art and technic that expresses entirely your individual skills, Your taste and Soul. Have fun! Because of its caracter, It can work perfectly as an introduction piece or for a little surprise encore in the end of a concert. It is also very easy to play, very appropriate for music students and beginners. And of course righten by no other than Mozart it is the perfect piece for great artists and performers. The original score was written for the pianoforte. I did an arrangement for woodwind quintet and made an extent use of interpretation symbols like fortes and pianos, crescendos etc., wish where total absent in the original score. I also had to shorten the length of some notes in order to facilitate the interpretation of the piece on woodwind instruments. Otherwise all the original notes are left unchanged. The score was written on Finale. The sound file, was performed with samplers from Garritan and conceived as an audio support for the presentation of the score.
