Published by Gordon Cherry (A0.810720). Composer John Frith has written a new solo virtuosic work for Bass Trombone with Piano accompaniment of about 3 minutes in length. Read below to see what his thoughts are about his composition for Jonathan Warburton. I have written a number of pieces (over many years) for Jonathan Warburton who also commissioned ‘Sons of Thunder’ in 2015. Jon’s gift for musical ‘acrobatics’ gave me the idea of creating a short, high-energy work that would give vent to his exceptional range and flexibility. The central section is muted and relatively calm but it is not long before the music builds and the opening material returns. A solo cadenza creates a welcome calm interlude before the storm gathers once again as the piece builds to a momentous fortissimo before grinding to a thunderous halt! ‘Sons of Thunder’ is the nickname given by Jesus to the apostles James and John, possibly reflecting their lively characters……I’m guessing that theirs were not too unlike Jonathan’s ebullient personality!.

Each movement is based on a famous French Impressionist painting as follows:1. Boulevard Montmarte (Pissarro – 1897) The Boulevard Montmartre is one of the four grand boulevards of Paris. This painting gave me the idea of writing a piece to portray a journey in a pony and trap through this busy street scene, starting out serenely in the suburbs, travelling through all the hustle and bustle, before trailing off into the distance. An all pervasive Poulenc mouvement perpetual accompaniment style is present throughout this movement. 2. Lac d'Annecy (Cézanne - 1896) Although marked Waltz triste (sad waltz), the mood of the music is rather reflective in nature. This movement is the longest of the five and I would not recommend it being played too slow. Stylistically, it is a characteristic accordion piece, so touches of rubato here and there wouldn’t be out of keeping. 3. La Cathédrale de Rouen (Monet - 1894) This is the most difficult movement to play in respect of intonation, with lots of unisons, octaves and parallel intervals. The opening should be a true piano in order to allow the piece grow. The plainsong statements should be played smoothly and with plenty of air. 4. Les Parapluies (Renoir - 1884) A jaunty, playful theme leading in to a little fugue. A little low in places for the euphoniums and baritones. The music should skip along comfortably without rushing to allow the finer detail to come through. 5. Au Moulin Rouge (Toulouse-Lautrec - 1895) A lively tempo, always chasing forward without slackening. As in the previous movement, good dynamic contrast, swells and tight precise articulation. Lots of work for everyone, especially the baritones and euphoniums. Take care that the mf dynamic of the 'bass solo' is not overdone. If needs must, the siren whistle could be substituted with a referee's whistle, but I would like my duck call! The champagne cork 'pops' are really more visual than audible, however, it would be advisable for more of the band to join in, as required. A super work to add to your repertoire as a concert or contest item. This title has already been played by a number of bands in various competitions, and was chosen as the 4th Section Test Piece for the Butlins Mineworkers Brass Band Championships 2015 in Skegness, UK.

This classic Doo-Wop song is arranged for trombone quintet with optional rhythm section. The range of the first and second trombone goes briefly up to B flat4, the third trombone goes up to G4. The range of the fourth trombone is a modest A flat2 to F4, but has the opening solo. The Bass Trombone provides the rhythmic drive and harmonic foundation, with range consistently low, from A flat1 to E flat3, thus requiring a player with solid technique and determination to keep the tempo from sagging. (ASPN pitch notation)This arrangement may be played by trombone quintet with or without the optional rhythm section. When performed without the rhythm section accompaniment, it is essential for each player to strive to keep the tempo up. A number of pieces popular in the 1940s, 50s, and 60s had lyrics that had no meaning but were nonsense syllables (non-lexical vocables) that were sung. Anyone familiar with the era will recognize songs such as: Witch Doctor (Ooo, eee, ooo ah ah, ting tang, Walla walla, bing bang), Sh-Boom (Do-roo-do-do, sh-boom), Blue Moon (Bom ba ba bom ba bom ba bom bom, Dang a dang dang, ding a dong ding). Often, the lead singer had lyrics that told a story, while a backup chorus just sang, Ooo, Aaah. The genre became known as Doo Wop. By the 1960s, the genre, with its simple chords, nonsense syllables, often sung a cappella or featuring a 4 or 5 part vocal group with simple accompaniment, was starting to fade in popularity. The song Who Put the Bomp manages to be both a part of the genre and a nostalgic reflection on its passing. This arrangement captures the essence of the era with close harmonies and a lively beat. The arranger, Bob Coil, is a graduate of the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of music, where he studied bass trombone with Betty Glover. Dr. Coil is the leader of the Bones of Cincinnatus trombone ensemble in Cincinnati, OH.

The work is ideal for music festivals (for which it was originally written) or any important event which needs a celebratory piece for choir and orchestra. The piece celebrates the endless joy of life and light, as children play on the seashore. The choral parts are not difficult and parts of the soprano could also be sung by children’s chorus if necessary. The words of the soprano solo part have a reflective, maternal quality as she watches the children playing on the shore. Singers are sure to enjoy the catchy melodies, the expressive soprano solo and the dramatic middle section of this work. Parts of the piece use several irregular time signatures. Don’t let them put you off! They are good deal easier than they look and the score contains indicates how they break down into simple groups of two and three beats.The orchestration is standard and requires: 2 flutes and piccolo, 2 oboes, 2 clarinets in B flat, 2 bassoons; 4 horns in F, 3 trumpets, 3 trombones, 1 tuba, timpani, percussion (4 players), violin 1, violin 2, viola, cello, double bass.
