Published by Chicory Music (A0.734378). One of Oswald Durand's most famous works, the 1883 Choucoune (Yellow Bird) is a lyrical poem that praises the beauty of a Haitian woman of that nickname. Michel Mauléart Monton, an American-born pianist with a Haitian father and American mother composed music for the poem in 1893, appropriating some French and Caribbean fragments to create his tune. The song Choucoune was first performed in Port-au-Prince on 14 May , 1893. It became a popular méringue lente (slow méringue) in Haiti, and was played prominently during the bicentennial celebrations in Port-au-Prince in 1949. Choucoune was recorded by Katherine Dunham and her Ensemble for the Decca album Afro-Caribbean Songs and Rhythms released in 1946 (with the title spelled as Choucounne), and was first recorded in Haiti by Emerante (Emy) de Pradines for her Voodoo - Authentic Music of Haiti album (Remington R-199-151) released in the USA in 1953.The song also appeared in the 1957 Calypso-exploitation film Calypso Heat Wave, performed by The Tarriers, sung by the group's lead singer, Alan Arkin.This arrangement of Yellow Bird includes: Full Score, 1st and 2nd Alto Sax, 1st and 2nd Tenor Sax (2nd Tenor Opt.) , Baritone Sax plus optional Acoustic Bass and Drum Set. Sunny Blue meanders through various styles; a straight start (mainly 6/8), launching into a groovy swing (following with optional improvisation, or use one of the two written out 'solos' provided). The journey then gravitates to a waltz, before completing its course by ending with a swing ending, and dramatic finish. Sunny Blue has a duration of 3'22 minutes, and is aimed at grade 6/+ players and makes a fantastic concert item. The YouTube video demo shows the whole piece performed on alto sax. You will however receive a universal piano score, and then two saxophone parts (one for Eb, and one for Bb sax).

It is sympathetic to the original music and should be easily accessible for intermediate to advanced players. There is also an optional percussion part on Timpani (Bb and F) that can easily be played on old fashioned hand tuned instruments, and will lend a bit more gravitas to any performance. The piece is very musically satisfying to play and will sit well on any concert or recital programme. The duration of the piece is about 4:50 minutes. The PDF is 24 pages long (A4 portrait) containing a full score and parts. Printing guidance - Score (pages1-13 print A4 double sided), all parts p14-24 (with the exception of Timpani p24) are designed to fit 2 x A4 pages on A3). It is fresh because the arranger has chosen not to use the 19th century harmonisation that we are all so familiar with (by Robert Lucas de Pearsall). Instead they have based this new arrangement on the harmonies of the great Renaissance composer, Michael Praetorius, from the first decade of the 17th century. An optional fanfare and postlude, based on other works of Praetorius, are included to set the context of the Renaissance period. The first verse is pure Praetorius, but then the arranger takes us in different and interesting directions while remaining completely faithful to the beautiful melody. It is a set of four concerti for Violin, each of the four representing one of the four seasons. A performance of the entire original set would take at least 40 minutes. This version is a collection of the main themes presented as a short suite and takes approximately 5 minutes to perform. Alternatively, each of the movements may be performed as a separate piece. The aim of this arrangement was to give Early Intermediate Level Woodwind and/or Brass players an opportunity to perform what is undoubtedly one of the most well-known pieces of Baroque string repertoire. The instrumentation is flexible, allowing for many different combinations of instruments, including Clarinet Trio/ Ensemble, Saxophone Trio/Ensemble, Brass Trio/Ensemble and even Concert Band. The Solo at the start of the 4th Movement (Winter) is an opportunity to feature a Part 1 player who is more advanced. The inclusion of this short section is entirely optional. Part 4 is optional and can be used to include a Tuba and/or less competent players of Clarinet, Bass Clarinet, Tenor Saxophone and F Horn. The inclusion of a Tuba is preferable in the case of a large brass ensemble. The inclusion of a Bass Clarinet (Part 3 or 4) is preferable in a large clarinet ensemble. The score is shown in concert pitch. Octave displacement occurs in some parts. Parts 2, 3 and 4 are kept below the break for the Clarinet and/or Bass Clarinet players.
