Piano,Soprano Saxophone - Level 1 - Digital Download SKU: A0.548666 Composed by James Pierpont. Arranged by James M. Guthrie, ASCAP. Christmas. Score and part. 8 pages. Jmsgu3 #3409331. Published by jmsgu3 (A0.548666). Jingle Bells arranged for soprano sax & piano. Score: 4 pg. piano part: 3 pg. sax part: 1 pg. Jingle Bells is perhaps the most famous songs in American music history. James L. Pierpont published the song as One Horse Open Sleigh in the late 1850’s. Since its introduction, people began to insist that Pierpont wrote it for a Sunday school choir. However, it seems unlikely that such a secular song would be considered appropriate during that historical period for Sunday school.Christmas Repertoire Pierpont wrote the song for the Thanksgiving holidays, but over time people began to think of it more as a Christmas song. Some choirs adopted it as part of their Christmas repertoire in the 1860s and 1870s. Jingle Bells was first recorded in 1889 on a wax cylinder. Origins No one knows where Pierpont composed the song. One theory suggests he wrote it in Medford Massachusetts in 1850. Sleigh races were certainly popular in 19th Century Massachusetts. To this day, a commemorative placard appears in Medford square claiming that it is the birthplace of Jingle Bells. Others suggest that he wrote it in Savannah, Georgia where he was an organist and music director at the Unitarian Church. This theory gains support from the copyright date of 1857. We know he was living in Savannah by then. Traffic Signals Horse-drawn sleighs are relatively quiet in the snow. Consequently, horses were usually equipped with bell-laden straps so as to avoid accidents at blind intersections. Sleigh drivers in 19th Century New England were constantly vigilant, listening for the sounds of approaching horse-drawn sleighs. The tune imitates the rhythm that the trotting horse bells produce. Social Context Jingle Bells was sung as a drinking song at local revelries: during the song folks would rhythmically jangle the ice in their glasses. A sleigh ride gave couples an opportunity to be alone together. The term Jingle bells is a poetic descriptive adjective referring specifically to the more accurate term sleigh bells. In many arrangements, sleigh bells are used to accentuate the rhythm during the song chorus. Register for free lifetime updates and revisions at www.jamesguthrie.com

David Warin Solomons #2028265. Published by David Warin Solomons (A0.575799). Many years before Lloyd Webber's Cats I created my own setting for TS Eliot's Song of the Jellicles (from Old Possum's book of practical cats) Originally it was intended for choir, but the estate of T S Eliot would not let me use the poem itself as a choral piece. However, they did allow me to use the word Jellicle in my instrumental titles. Each version follows the rhythms of the T S Eliot poem. The sound sample is a live performance with Tasse on recorder and the composer on guitar. The versions available are: A duo for descant recorder and guitar (Jellicle Duo for recorder and guitar) A quartet for recorders (Jellicle Quartet for recorders) and A quartet for strings (Jellicle Catgut for string quartet) There is also available a choral version of the music following the recorder quartet version, which is a drinking song for SATB choir, with new words by Jill Mitchell called Praise to the Vine.

Instrumental Duet Instrumental Duet,Medium Voice,Piano - Digital Download SKU: A0.841273 Composed by Chris Gordon. Arranged by Chris Gordon. Folk,Rock. Score and parts. 10 pages. Cool Wind Music Digital #3220995. Published by Cool Wind Music Digital (A0.841273). This is a folk/rock ballad with a twist as the 'story' it tells comes straight out of a novel by German author Günter Grass', Local Anaesthetic (1969). Phillipp (Flip) Scherbaum, a 17-year old Berlin high school student, wants to do something, anything to protest what he has been reading in newspapers has been happening to the people of Vietnam. (Remember this is 1967!) He comes up with an idea: he has a little Dachshund puppy called Max. Flip decides to burn Max right outside the most famous café in Berlin, Kempinski's (it is still there), to shock complacent Berliners into paying attention to what is happening in Vietnam. His history teacher, Eberhard (Hardy) Starusch, agrees to Flip's protest idea but draws the line firmly against killing an innocent animal. Hardy sets out to dissuade his student from carrying out this doggiecide. Instead, he resolves to steer Flip to less harmful ways of protesting. The effort drives Hardy to a lot of hard thinking and hard drinking and a lot of trips to the dentist!Poor Max is a realisation of one of Hardy's suggestions to Flip: to write and perform a protest song outside Kempinski's - and elsewhere in Berlin, too. You will not be surprised to hear that head-strong Flip rejects this suggestion but I have taken up Hardy's idea and written my own protest song for Flip. The words and the music are my own: I have not borrowed either from anyone else (except for one little phrase which I discovered I had unconsciously borrowed from Robert Schumann)!

Choral Choir (SATB) - Level 5 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1143904 Composed by Igor Korneitchouk. 20th Century,A Cappella,Contemporary,Religious. Octavo. 37 pages. Studio at the Post #744209. Published by Studio at the Post (A0.1143904). Duration: 16 minutes, 33 pp. Description: Exodus is a great story that belongs to everyone. Not only is it central to Judaism, not only is it integral to the Christian Bible, it is an immortal story that has been, and continues to be, an inspiration to oppressed peoples everywhere on this planet. It is relevant not just as ancient scripture but as living text, to be rediscovered by each new generation of an ever-widening Family of Man. The theme of struggle against oppression and slavery was just as relevant to the early Christians persecuted in Ancient Rome as it was relevant to the American Civil Rights movement of the 1960's, just as relevant to the Soviet Jews wishing to emigrate as it is to the South African Blacks resisting Apartheid. From the Dark Ages and the Spanish Inquisition, to Ghandi's emancipation of India, to the Holocaust, to, full-circle, the ongoing struggles in Palestine today, the story of Exodus is a guiding light in a dim and often grim world. According to the composer: The Story of a Leader is a collection of ‘re-chorales’ I created one summer when I was totally immersed in a post-educational obsession with the 371 Chorales by Johann Sebastian Bach. We used to study these to learn the rules of harmony and voice-leading (no parallel fifths, avoid crossed voices, etc.) at the Cleveland Institute of Music where I began my compositional career. That summer, now a professor of music in my own right, I discovered many broken and bent rules by the master himself and, along with the glory of being able to work through these Chorales myself at the piano, I felt an incredible feeling of liberation and possibilities unmediated by instructors of music theory. I began by stripping away all that Bach wrote, leaving only the hymn tunes which were not his to begin with. These tunes existed long before Bach used them for his tonal experiments, some attributed to Martin Luther, or someone else, others simply listed as ‘anonymous’. The same is true for the texts, which were then translated into English mostly in the 19th century (the provenance of each can be found herein on the first page of each of my reharmonizations). In some cases I modified the text to fit the context. I selected 12 of these ‘re-chorales,’ linking them together based on their texts in a kind of logic that worked for me, and created a narrative that told The Story of a Leader (Moses). This story is highlighted in the music with such techniques as cross-modal harmonies, points of imitation, a beer drinking song in one instance, and in another, to symbolize the parting of the seas for Moses’ people, an inversion of the soprano line in the bass..

The Brindisi (drinking song), Libiamo ne’ lieti calici (Let’s drink from the joyful chalices) is the famous duet from the Italian opera La traviata (1853) by Giuseppe Verdi, and perhaps one of the best known opera melodies in all the operatic repertoire. It was written in 1850 by James Lord Pierpont at Simpson Tavern in Medford, Massachusetts. It was published under the title The One Horse Open Sleigh in September 1857. It has been claimed that it was originally written to be sung by a Sunday school choir for Thanksgiving, or as a drinking song. Although it has no original connection to Christmas, it became associated with winter and Christmas music in the 1860s and 1870s, and it was featured in a variety of parlor song and college anthologies in the 1880s. It was first recorded in 1889 on an Edison cylinder; this recording, believed to be the first Christmas record, is lost, but an 1898 recording - also from Edison Records - survives.Subscribe to my YouTube Channel to stay updated on new releases.

Dorothy van Joolen Barth #6736159. Published by Dorothy van Joolen Barth (A0.785052). The Wild Rover is a drinking song that may date back as far as the 16th century. It is nowadays one of the most popular Irish ballads, although its origin is uncertain. I had a special request to play this tune for a 2022 St. Patrick's celebration, which inspired me to write this arrangement.I've scored and recorded this tune for tenor recorder and violin, with each instrument getting a chance to play the melody line. I've added double stops in the violin part for a fuller, more energetic sound. This duo can also be played on flute and violin, on soprano recorder (an octave higher than tenor recorder) and violin, or on penny whistle and violin.

Choral Alto Voice,Bass Voice,Double Bass,Piano and Keyboard,Soprano voice,Tenor Voice,Viola,Violin - Level 3 - Interactive Download SKU: A0.481914 By The Beatles. By John Lennon and Paul McCartney. Arranged by Jeremy Nafziger. This edition: Interactive Download. Christmas. Octavo. Duration 286. Jeremy Nafziger #6Re335EyhndYxZ7ALSuj10. Published by Jeremy Nafziger (A0.481914). Key: C major. The Beatles classic with the Advent hymn, In Dulci Jubilo. Both texts come from dreams, and this winds up a meaningful combination. In Dulci was written in the 14th century by German monk and teacher Heinrich Suso (or Seuse), who writes in his third-person autobiography about a dream he had: Now this same angel came up to the Servant [Suso] brightly, and said that God had sent him down to him, to bring him heavenly joys amid his sufferings; adding that he must cast off all his sorrows from his mind and bear them company, and that he must also dance with them in heavenly fashion. Then they drew the Servant by the hand into the dance, and the youth began a joyous song about the infant Jesus, which runs thus: In dulci jubilo... About 650 years later, in 1968, Paul McCartney was staying out late, drinking too much, and thinking that the Beatles were probably going to break up soon. Then one night, somewhere between deep sleep and insomnia, I had the most comforting dream about my mother, who died when I was only 14. She had been a nurse, my mum, and very hardworking, because she wanted the best for us.... At night when she came home, she would cook, so we didn’t have a lot of time with each other. But she was just a very comforting presence in my life. And when she died, one of the difficulties I had, as the years went by, was that I couldn’t recall her face so easily.... So in this dream twelve years later, my mother appeared, and there was her face, completely clear, particularly her eyes, and she said to me very gently, very reassuringly: “Let it be.†It was lovely. I woke up with a great feeling. It was really like she had visited me at this very difficult point in my life and gave me this message: Be gentle, don’t fight things, just try and go with the flow and it will all work out. His mother's name was Mary, or course. He wrote the song in the next few days, and it was released on the album on the same name in 1970, a month after the Beatles split up. As for the actual texts, they're very different. In Dulci is macaronic (alternating between two languages, in this case Latin and a translation from Medieval German) and ecstatic; Let It Be is English and more subdued. In this version, we alternate between the two but keep the Let It Be structure, except for a diversion in the middle where the well-known Bach setting is adopted as kind of an interlude. The two texts and melodies are sung together in the last verse (the fourth In Dulci verse and the third Let It Be verse), where both are talking about music.

J'ai Vu Le Loup is an old French song in which the Gregorian chant tune of Dies Irae becomes a lively dance. The lyrics describe seeing the wolf, the fox, and the hare (possibly the King, the Church, and the Landlord) eating, drinking, and dancing. Variations of this song seem to exist from as early as the 13th century and can be found in several European countries as well as in modern Cajun and Quebec French versions. Even modern pop and rap performers have made use of it. This recorder ensemble arrangement begins simply, then builds throughout to a frenzied, syncopated finale. Each part has its own interest.
