The most basic pattern of the Psalm of Lament is the complaint followed by a statement of confidence. The Psalm of Lament progresses from the pain, doubt, and confusion caused by problems and suffering to a statement of belief that God knows and understands and will act for the good of the psalmist. This statement of confidence is not given after God has rescued, but while the psalmist is still in crisis. This is what makes the words a Psalm and not faithless murmurings that God condemns.♫ The opening words of the Psalm, “A Psalm of David, when he fled from Absalom his son,†(NASB) are actually the first verse of the Psalm 3 in the Hebrew Bible, not merely an editorial comment by a current scholar. Longfellow is a testament to viewing life in the most positive way, and not by dwelling on its hardships or past crises. Nowhere is it written that this life journey should or must be viewed in any negative way.Modulations that occur in several areas are meant to emphasize critical ideas of the poem, and the performers should take note of the melodic stress that occurs among the various parts (See measures 33 and 41). Dynamics are important in relaying the meaning of the text and should be observed, although the conductor should feel free to augment these whenever she or he deems it necessary. As always, relaying the meaning of the words through the music should always be considered the primary goal of the performance.

There was no king of Judah in Zechariah’s day. The former exiles who had returned to Judah were under the authority of the Persians. Any king would have to be authorized by the higher secular authority. But Zechariah foresees a king who will enter Jerusalem, riding on a donkey. ♫ The choice of the animal here is important. The donkey is the beast of burden of the common man. (Analogous to an economic or dilapidated automobile.) Horses were primarily used by soldiers; something like a victor riding into town in a tank. Mules (Jewish law forbade the breeding of hybrid animals) were the choice of the wealthy. In Judea, they were evidently imported. David had Solomon ride into Jerusalem on his mule (something like a sports car.) But Zechariah sees Messiah will presenting Himself as king riding the transportation of the common person. On Psalm Sunday, about a week before Jesus’ death, the crowds quoted Zechariah 9 and Psalm 118 as Jesus offered Himself to the nation as king. ♫ Hope of the World is made of 2 suites of songs that present messianic prophecies from the Old Testament that are referenced in the New Testament. A Mighty Fortress is Our God ♫ piano solo arrangement by Stephen R Dalrymple ♫ Martin Luther wrote Ein Feste Burg sometime between 1527 and 1529. (Luther published the Ninety-five Theses in 1517 and was excommunicated in 1521.) Ein Feste Burg was translated into English by Miles Coverdale in 1539 with the title, Oure God is a defence and towre. The English text most familiar to me was translated by Francis Hedge in 1853. ♫ Luther believed in the power of music. In 1558 in the Forward to Georg Rhau's Symphoniae he wrote “I truly desire that all Christians would love and regard as worthy the lovely gift of music, which is a precious, worthy, and costly treasure given to mankind by God. … next to the Word of God, the noble art of music is the greatest treasure in the world. It controls our thoughts, minds, hearts, and spirits.... Our dear fathers and prophets did not desire without reason that music be always used in the churches. Hence, we have so many songs and psalms. This precious gift has been given to man alone that he might thereby remind himself that God has created man for the express purpose of praising and extolling God.†♫ In his lifetime, Luther made 3 major contributions to the Church: the doctrine of salvation by faith alone, the belief that Scripture should be translated into the people's language (producing a translation of the Bible into German), and the birth of congregational singing. In Roman Catholic churches of his day, only the cantor and a chorus sang the mass in Latin. UPC: 000308048964.This collection of Psalm Interpretations for Organ features eight original compositions that reflect the spirit of verses from selected psalms. It is suggested that the psalm verses associated with each setting be included in the congregational leaflet or printed recital program. For variety, the entire psalm could be read before the playing of the musical setting. These settings were suggested by and written for Dr. Joan DeVee Dixon, Professor of Music at Frostburg State University in Frostburg, Maryland. Dr. Dixon also serves as organist and director of music at the historic Emmanuel Parish in Cumberland, Maryland. The work was commissioned by Dr. Alvin C Broyles, retired senior research associate of Exxon Production Research Company. His is a dedicated supporter of the arts and a lifetime member of the Board of Trustees of the University of the Ozarks in Clarksville, Arkansas.

And while watching our society fall apart, I was struck by the reality of how insignificant we are as a species. The passage from Psalm 103 comparing mortals to grass has been on my mind for quite some time, and I have been looking for an opportunity to set it to music. I choose to focus on the first line “Homo, sicut fenum dies ejus, in English, “The life of mortals is like grass, so fitting for the ongoing pandemic.The piece is structured around the idea of canon and repetition, and the motifs are sung throughout different parts as a soft wind sweeping through the choir … A sparse compositional texture evolves, depicting the fragility of the human race. Preferably this piece should be sung in a venue with a great deal of reverb, making the single voices blend into a homogenous whole. I could easily see how the choir could be placed around the audience or spread out in a way that would make the different motifs come from different directions. – Henrik Dahlgren.

I set out to compose a musical setting of the text in hopes that the words and music may be of comfort to others too in seasons of grief, adversity, or doubt. “My tears have been my food both day and night, and all the time, people ask, ‘Where is your God?’ But each day, the Lord pours His unfailing love upon me, and through the night, I sing His songs, praying to God who gives me life.†(Psalm 42:3, 8) I composed the piece originally for a cappella choir, but after finishing, I was inspired to create a transcription for Concert Band as well. This transcription may be performed separately, or combined with choir for more impact if desired.

This is one of two duets that Leguerney wrote for Geneviève Touraine and her brother, the famous French baritone Gérard Souzay. It was completed on 21 January 1950. The first performance, with Souzay and Touraine, was 21 June 1950 in the Parisian Salle Gaveau with Jacqueline Robin (Bonneau) at the piano. Previously unpublished, De l’abîme profond, was first recorded by soprano Danielle Borst and baritone Philippe Huttenlocher with Mary Dibbern at the piano. This was for the CD 50-9618, 28 Mélodies issued by Claves Records-Radio Suisse Romande: Espace 2 in 1996. The recording was recognized with the Grand Prix du Disque de l’Académie Charles Cros. The US premiere performance was by soprano Jill Pearon and baritone David Pittman-Jennings, accompanied by Mary Dibbern, during a recital at the Crane School of Music, SUNY-Potsdam, New York, 23 October 2007. The vocal range for the soprano line is C1-G#2 and for the baritone line is B-F1. The text’s poet, Jean de La Céppède (1550-1622), was born in Marseille and spent most of his life working as a lawyer and magistrate in Aix–en–Provence. His principal work, Théorèmes, consists of 515 sonnets dealing with the life of Jesus Christ and the “sacred mysteries of our redemption.†La Céppède’s poem is a translation of a psalm by David from the Old Testament of the Bible. Leguerney also set a psalm of David for medium voice and chamber orchestra, which was premiered by Gérard Souzay in 1954. This orchestral Psaume LXII de David is also published by Musik Fabrik.
