Trio Sonata in C is a pleasant little work by the mostly unknown German Baroque composer Johann Georg Linike. Although called a trio sonata, it does not follow the typical format of a Baroque trio sonata. Each of the three movements are quite short – think of it as a trio sonata in miniature. Together, all three movements take less than five minutes to perform. 1st, 2nd, and 3rd parts are included for both E flat and B flat instruments. The parts may be combined as desired. The short length and moderate range of the piece make this a good choice for intermediate players. Movement 1, Allegro in C major, is in common time. Movement 2, Adagio in A minor, is in  common time. Movement 3, Vivace in C major, is in 3/4 time.

Toccata, Adagio and Fugue in C, BWV 564 is one of Johann Sebastian Bach's most famous organ works.Toccata: This part starts with an introduction that sounds like improvisation. It has fast, single-note passages like a concerto's cadenza. At measure 32, it changes to a bright, full sound like an orchestra.Adagio: This part is slow and very beautiful, with a sad feeling in a minor key.Fugue: In 6/8 time, this part is lively and bright, like a dance such as a Gigue or Passepied, even though it is not labeled as a dance.In my previous publication, Toccata & Fugue, BWV 565 for Violin and Viola, I showcased the unique beauty of string instruments. Similarly, in this piece, the beautiful melody of the Adagio fits perfectly with the Violin and Viola, as if it were originally composed for them. The dance-like energy of the Fugue is also easier to express with string instruments.When two people perform this piece, it creates an interesting dialogue, almost like a conversation. The introduction of the Toccata reflects this, inspired by my students who would chat enthusiastically before starting their practice. Their conversation in the music lasts for 31 measures without any chords together. The short unison phrase in measure 13 symbolizes their agreement to start playing together. After that, their conversation continues, with triplets and important motifs of this movement appearing, increasing the expectation for the ensemble to begin. From measure 32, the real ensemble playing begins. Although we don't know what Bach imagined when he wrote this introduction, I now hear it as a conversation, even when listening to the original organ version.In the Adagio viola part, the continuo notes are marked in black, and the notes that create harmony are marked in blue. Players who can control the volume balance of double stops should balance it so that the continuo flows naturally. Players who are not skilled in playing double stops, it might be better to omit the blue notes in difficult sections. If omitted, the section might feel empty, but with careful playing before and after, it could still sound natural.

Published by Gordon Cherry (A0.792126). The Adagio in G minor for Trombone and String Quartet is a wonderful arrangement of the work attributed to Tomaso Albinoni (1671-1751). The work is about 7 minutes in length for advanced performers.Below is a short article about the Adagio by the arranger, Sean F. Biehn:There is much controversy as to who wrote the Adagio for Strings in G minor and whether it was a stolen idea or embellished from a piece of a manuscript. The piece is considered to be a fragment of Tomaso Albinoni's (1671-1751) original manuscript with a few measures of the melodic material and the basso continuo. During World War II, the bombings of Dresdon, which is where the Saxon State Library resided, was destroyed and Remo Giazotto (1910-1998) evacuated most of its documents, being that he was a musicologist-and an Albinoni biographer. Giazotto took the fragment of manuscript and completed what he thought would be the completed piece which in turn makes his completed piece an original composition. In 1958, Giazotto finalized the piece under the title of Adagio in G minor for Strings and Organ, on Two Thematic Ideas and on a Figured Bass by Tomaso Albinoni. Remo Giazotto never shared the manuscript and after his death in 1998, there has never been a record of the missing manuscript fragment. To this day, the string ensemble with organ is popularly performed. There have been numerous and recent alterations in instrumentation for this piece due to the fact that other soloists wanted to perform the beautiful piece. This particular version of the piece contains a string quartet accompanying a trombone soloist.

The fugue in question was the two piano fugue in C minor, K. 426, written in December 1783.The work is in two sections:AdagioFuga (Allegro)The 52-bar Adagio has a very ominous and foreboding tone; musicologist Robert D. I received an email from Joel Quarrington in 2011 with a request to buy a score and a set of parts to Hylidae … The Tree Frogs (1991) for violin, double bass and piano. He said he would like to perform the work at the next International Society of Bassists convention in Rochester, New York. I told him That is great. But it’s such an old work. Why don’t I write something new for you? He said, How much would a commission cost? I said, Let me write the piece first and if you like it, we can talk about a fee then. I began work on Toccata for Double Bass and Piano in late August and completed it on October 15. I sent Joel the music as a PDF and MIDI file via email. He wrote back, The piece looks really terrific and I have enjoyed listening to it as well, thanks for the midi file. I couldn’t be happier! Toccata is in three movements, fast-slow-fast, with internal ABA ternary forms in the first and last movements - also fast-slow-fast. Moderato … Trio … A tempo. Adagio. Allegro … Trio … Reprise! The first movement begins with a driving dotted-note motif in the double bass accompanied by an insistent sixteenth-note bass-line in the piano left hand and a soaring quarter-note melody in the piano right hand. A Trio follows which features a lyric melody in the double bass … molto cantabile! The double bass returns this time stealing the sixteenth-note bass-line motif from the piano left hand. The double bass pushes the music forward relentlessly and ferociously … holding no prisoners! To add counterpoint to this madness, the piano comes back with the quarter-note melody but in octaves this time. The left hand joins the melee occasionally to push the music forward until it reaches its climax at the conclusion. The second movement, Adagio, is a slow waltz. The mournful tune is delivered by the double bass at first, then it’s passed on to the piano, and it goes back and forth between the two. The third movement is a 6/8 romp, very syncopated and jazzy. The music goes back and forth between the double bass and piano, not unlike when the musicians in a jazz combo trade four’s among each other. An adagio Trio follows. The tune is in the double bass: long descending lines over a languid piano accompaniment. To complete the ABA format, the music from the beginning of this movement returns as a reprise. ENJOY!!! Commissioned by Joel Quarrington for a premiere performance at the 2013 International Society of Bassists Convention at Eastman School of Music in Rochester, New York.

The piece was commissioned by Count Joseph Deym von Stritetz for use as a funeral mass to be played on a mechanical organ clock in the mausoleum for the recently deceased Generalfeldmarschall (Fieldmarshall) Ernst Gideon von Laudon, part of the Müllersche Kunstgalerie, the wax art gallery and organ museum of Joseph Müller (which was the Count Deym's assumed name). This displayed a casket covered with glass, through which one could view a wax figure of the Field Marshall. When the clock struck the hour, a lament was heard: a new one each week, one of which was Mozart's Adagio and Allegro.Although Mozart intended the piece to be played on a mechanical clockwork organ, he wished later that it could be played on a conventional organ. In a letter to his wife Constanze dated 3rd October, 1790, he wrote, If it were on a large clock-work with a sound like an organ, I'd be glad to do it; but as it is a thing made up of tiny pipes only, which sound too shrill and childish for me. As time passed, Mozart seemed to be content with the decision, saying later that the work and its installation in the gallery in fruitlessness and purity and compatibility to the works of art eclipses anything that anyone has ever succeeded in producing.
