The performance duration of this selection is about five minutes at the suggested tempo. This selection will find welcome performance opportunities whenever a lighter-themed selection of Americana music is desired. While light-themed in nature, this arrangement places musical challenges upon the performers, all of whom should be medium advanced in their performance skills. This arrangement is written alla breve and begins in the key of F Major (concert), but modulates to G Major (concert) and eventually concludes in Ab Major (concert). The Trumpet I part ascends scale-wise to written Eb above high C at the end of a run at one point. The French Horn has a couple of instances of a written high G, A, and Bb above the staff. Otherwise, ranges are reasonable.The arrangement has multiple musical references to the American West. To this arranger the melody suggested a reference to fiddle tunes and barn dances, an important social and cultural past-time of the era. It seemed like a logical direction to steer this arrangement.

It was first published in 1858.“Git Along, Little Dogies†is a cowboy ballad, also known as “Whoopie Ti Yi Yoâ€. While likely older, the first mention of the song was in author Owen Wister’s 1893 journal. It was first published in 1910. “Dogies†is a reference to small or orphaned calves. The narrative of the song quotes a cowboy singing to the slow or stray dogies as they move along the cattle drive to Wyoming.“Rock Island Line†refers the Rock Island and La Salle Railroad company (established 1947) which soon after became the Chicago and Rock Island Railroad. When construction of the railroad arrived at Rock Island in 1854, it became the first to connect Chicago with the Mississippi River. This folk song references an encounter between an operator of a toll gate and a train engineer who is let through without paying by lying about his payload. Oh Shenandoah is a traditional American folk song from the 19th Century of traders traveling down the Missouri River in canoes. II. Simple Gifts is a Shaker song written and composed in 1848, generally attributed to Elder Joseph Brackett (1797 - 1882) of Alfred Shaker Village in the state of Maine. This arrangement is for a tuba feature that the composer Gregory Fritze did in 1988 when he first started performing children’s concerts with the Rhode Island Philharmonic Brass Quintet, when he had to demonstrate the tuba. He adjusted this for the Spanish Brass in 2021. III. Aaron Hettinga #955893. Published by Aaron Hettinga (A0.1371643). Professor Frank Marion Davis (1839-1896) was an American educator, singer, and composer of both hymns and secular works. Among his secular works were a number of collections of polkas and waltzes written for solo piano. This series of works presents arrangements of a number of Davis’ compositions prepared for the instrumentation of Alford’s “Hungry Five†polka band books and serve as a fine addendum to those familiar pieces. While the clarinet parts tend to be the most active, they often feature diatonic scalar patterns. All parts should remain accessible to most intermediate-level players. The “Blue Bird’s Call†Polka (originally published in 1876) contains onomatopoeic chirps in the clarinet parts that make for a light and fun addition to any program. “Good Enough†Polka (originally published in 1874) is an example of Davis’ standard composition form used throughout most of this collection. “Harvest Home†Waltz (originally published in 1873) adds a pleasant waltz to the collection. Its melody is first presented simply,then embellishments are added as the piece continues. Davis’ aptly-titled “Jolly Friend†Polka (originally published in 1874) is a jovial tune with a bouncy melody that moves the clarinetists nimbly around a bit! “Lake-Side†Polka (originally published in 1874) has more participation in the Trumpet and Trombone parts than are found in much of the rest of this collection. “Nimble Toe†Polka (originally published in 1874) passes the melodic and accompaniment elements around the ensemble for a bit of variety for the players. This is an arrangement of the famous American civil war melody, scored for flexible ensemble in F. It is also available in B flat. This series has been specifically designed to meet the requirements of the ever-changing ensemble combinations that primary and secondary schools and other instrumental ensembles face. Because certain instruments are more comfortable in playing in certain keys, each work will be offered in two keys. This should allow for the music director to choose the key most suitable for the instrumental combination. Each piece consists of five core instrumental parts: 2 treble, 1 alto, tenor and bass. All parts will have a number of transpositions suitable for the instruments that are capable of playing those parts, eg, Part 2 will have parts for violin, B flat clarinet and trumpet, and E flat alto sax.  This will save music directors' time in having to write out additional parts. Optional parts are included for tuned and untuned percussion, guitar (chords) and bass guitar (notation and TAB), a keyboard part appropriate to the difficulty level, and a rehearsal piano part which is a fuller realisation of the piece and could be played by a more advanced student or the music director. If the numbers of players on each part allows, the music director can feel free to 'solo' instruments and vary the orchestration, especially on repeats, to create variety in instrumental colour.

This traditional folksong, which dates back to the early 19th century, has been given some new life with this arrangement for bassoon quartet. The floating melody, primarily in the 1st bassoon part, is passed around to other players, while the 4th bassoon lays the strong foundation, much like the strong a steady current of the Missouri River. The dynamics in this arrangement urge the performers to swell in and out and they play, reflective of the ripples in the water as canoes and boats float by. Be sure not to rush this piece, and refer to some of the traditional lyrics:Oh Shenandoah,I long to hear you,Away, you rolling river.'Tis seven years since last I've seen you,Away, you rolling river.There is a sense of longing in the various lyrics of the original folk song, whether because of missing home, missing a loved one, or the pains of forbidden love. Performers are urged to play with the same delicacy of those intimate emotions and gentle waters of the large river. The ending should be reflective of echoes in the open air on the river as one floats across the wide Missouri.
