The opening percussion motif is intended to evoke Aaron Copland's Fanfare for the Common Man.II. Oh, Watch the Stars-- Oh, Watch the Stars and Great Big Stars, combined in unique ways. The two songs used, Oh, Watch the Stars and Great Big Stars, are distinct in their own right. They have been fused together in this movement, borrowing the text from one and using the tune from the other, and modifying one to partner with the other when presented simultaneously. Kennedy School in Berlin, to mark the 25th anniversary of their annual Advent services held in Berlin Cathedral. It was performed by joint choirs, drawn from students, parents and faculty, and choir members of the American Church in Berlin on 29 November 2017.The piece is built around the ancient hymn, Let all mortal flesh keep silence. I was asked to write an organ prelude, to serve as a processional as the choirs assembled. This may be ordered separately through SwirlyMusic.org - and now also through SheetMusicPlus.After an opening fanfare-like section, the hymn setting starts gently, with sopranos singing in unison, with successive verses using contrasting choral forces to reflect the words, and the music builds to a big climax, with a return of the fanfare opening, for the final verse, At his feet the six-winged seraph, ending with joyful Alleluias. Although originally conceived for a large chorus with orchestral accompaniment, the setting may be performed with just organ or piano.There's a youtube video at https://youtu.be/HQwYDJRdmcc - this is an extract from the first performance in the magnificent setting of Berlin Cathedral, which was packed to capacity. The quality of both sound and picture isn't great, but it will provide you with an idea of the atmosphere and impact of the piece. The sound recording covers the whole piece, using Sibelius sounds. Curtis, Choral Director at the JFK School, writes:Prelude and Cherubic Hymn is a grand arrangement of the timeless carol 'Let All Mortal Flesh Keep Silence'. Utilizing choir, full orchestra and organ, it is sure to please and impress performers and audience alike. At a recent performance in the Berlin Cathedral, the piece received spontaneous applause (which was a first for this kind of event).NOTE - Although originally scored for orchestra, the piece would work well with just choir and organ - in which case the fanfare sections at the beginning and the first 6 measures at letter F could be omitted. Psalms 100.This anthem was commissioned by Dorothy Yates to mark the 50th anniversary of St. Dunstan’s Episcopal Church, Atlanta, Georgia. The text is announced by a brief fanfare on the organ. The raised 4th scale degree of the opening theme suggests the Lydian mode and accentuates the music’s upward thrust. Following the opening fanfare, the setting passes back and forth between duple and triple meter several times. Triple and duple rhythmic elements occur simultaneously and play off of one another. In the anthem’s middle section, the rhythmic energy of the opening is exchanged for a gentle extended crescendo as voices alternately sing their four-note, stepwise, rising lines over sustained organ chords. Then, the more energetic and somewhat metrically ambiguous elements of the previous section return. Finally, the text and music heard at the anthem’s opening recur in the manner of an antiphon. Duration: 3:20.

Diatonic Waltz Program Notes: The Intonatione In the Whole-Tone Scale recalls the Renaissance Italian musical form that evolved into the prèlude in later organ music, as well as the use of Italian forms in the atonal music of Arnold Schoenberg, and some neo-Baroque composers of the twentieth century. In contrast, the whole-tone scale is reminiscent of generally tonal composers, including Debussy. The Martial Prèlude and Nocturne in Modes recalls the many pre-twentieth century pairings of preludes with fugues and other forms. The pairing with a nocturne evokes an air of Romanticism. The Martial Prèlude is a march-like fanfare, in Lydian mode on C. The Chopinesque Nocturne is in Phrygian mode, on E flat. An Impression of Impressionism evokes some of Debussy’s Preludes pour Piano, including a suggestive title at the bottom of the page, as Debussy himself did. For the young pianist aiming to master the works of Debussy, the arpeggio patterns, block chords, and sequential motives will prove helpful as introductory exercises. An Imitation of Roy Harris was inspired by the occasion in 1976 when James Siddons heard Roy Harris speaking in person about his compositions. Siddons was impressed by Harris’ youth in Oklahoma, and how the solidity of American rural life shaped Harris’ symphonic music. When taking questions at the end of the lecture, a young composer asked Harris about his creative methods when composing music. Well, Harris responded, You don’t pull up a potato just to see if its growing. Adding Chord-Tones While Shifting Meters is a technical exercise that is nonetheless fun to listen to, and fun to play. A student pianist should be asked to analyze the harmony in this piece, and to describe what shifts are taking place when the musical meter (as well as phrasing and rhythm patterns) change. The echoes of Stravinsky and Bartók should be apparent to the listener and pianist. Ragtime was not regarded as art music of the same caliber as Stravinsky and Schoenberg, or even Copland and Gershwin, until the 1970s. The inclusion of ragtime in these seven pieces would not have been accepted by composers of the early twentieth century, Stravinsky excepted. Ragtime Bitonality explores how such piano music might have sounded had major composers of the 1900-1920 era taken an interest in its march-like vitality. There is even a touch of atonality! In contrast to the powerful rhythms and juxtaposed tonal relations in much early twentieth-century music, there were works by many composers that continued familiar melodic patterns and balanced forms, offering musical relief in a turbulent era in music history. The Diatonic Waltz is offered here as a quiet, peaceful conclusion to our tour of musical styles in classical music of a century ago. The work makes a brief reference to Copland's famous 'Fanfare for the Common Man' before developing its own sense of line. Harmonies are created by sustaining melodic notes in the manner of bells. The piece is highly accessible and is appropriate for higher standard horn players, including students and the more advanced. This short prelude was written as a processional to precede a festive arrangement of the ancient cherubic hymn, Let all mortal flesh keep silence, which received its first performance at Berlin Cathedral on November 29th 2017. This was commissioned to mark the 25th anniversary of John F Kennedy School’s annual Advent services, in collaboration with the American Church in Berlin.The prelude incorporates themes from various Advent hymns, as well as elements of the fanfare theme from the main choral piece. As well as providing an introduction to a performance of the Cherubic Hymn setting (which can be ordered separately), the prelude may also be performed as a stand-alone piece.As in the first performance, I have left the registrations to be added by the organist.
