A 3-1/2 minute piece written to showcase a 5-piece guitar ensemble. This was written for classical guitars, but playable on steel-string or electric with pick.  A fun piece that evokes the ominous atmosphere of a fantasy dungeon adventure, influenced by Spanish classical guitar and maybe a touch of heavy metal. Melodies and ideas are traded between the guitarists for stereo/antiphonal fun.There are some challenging fast runs, but having five guitars means each part plays a melody or chord, so there's little multi-part playing for any individual. Due to fitting in five voices, there are some passsages up to the 12th fret. Parts include suggested fret positions and chord names for full chords.

The text was originally written in Latin. It is a metrical paraphrase of the O Antiphons, a series of plainchant antiphons attached to the Magnificat at Vespers over the final days before Christmas. The hymn has its origins over 1,200 years ago in monastic life in the 8th or 9th century. Seven days before Christmas Eve monasteries would sing the O antiphons in anticipation of Christmas Eve when the eighth antiphon, O Virgo virginum (O Virgin of virgins) would be sung before and after Mary’s canticle, the Magnificat (Luke 1:46b-55). CONDITOR ALME SIDERUM is one of the oldest Christian hymns, whose simplicity and rhythmical flow reflect the freedom of speech. Written seven centuries later, WIE SCHON LEUCHTET is at the other end of the spectrum: measured, straight forward and fanfare-like. The introduction intersperses dramatic .ashes of light and the resulting shimmer (via the echo technique) with phrases of the chant. The chant is treated in its entirety at measure 19, and then antiphonally at measure 27 with its inversion (light reflected). The German chorale is heard at measure 40, and again in augmentation at measure 62 layered over the chant, each phrase of which is echoed (reflected) an octave lower. The piece ends with a return to the opening .ashes of light, this time the shimmering sixteenth-notes being more pronounced.

English.This work was composed for a large choral ensemble of approximately 90 voices with the capability of dividing into two choirs. The division that actually does occur in this piece is an “internal†division rather than an “external†one. Therefore, it is not necessary for the singers to be physically divided into two separate groups with a space between them, but rather, the singers may remain in their usual arrangement in the chorus and sing the double chorus section with the effect of an internal, reflective type of sound rather than the more commonly used antiphonal sound with a spatial effect created by physical separation of the two choruses. Based on a poem by Thomas Merton, the text speaks of the anticipation of events yet to be fulfilled. In more specific terms, the poem is an Advent poem which heralds of the birth of Jesus through the use of texts from biblical arables and from other Gospel narratives combined with images of everyday experiences, such as church bells, birds, water, and the fields and trees that were familiar to Merton’s Trappist community. Oboe part included in score.

Published by Con Spirito Music (A0.726102). “O Come, O Come Emmanuel†are the opening words of John Mason Neale’s (1818-1866) translation of the Medieval text, “Veni, Emmanuel,†with music arranged by Thomas Helmore (1811-1890), for The Hymnal Noted (London, 1856). The text of this most famous of Advent hymns is taken from various “‘O’ Antiphons,†verses sung or recited before and after the Magnificat during the evening Vespers service in the last week of Advent. Each antiphon is a name of Christ, and together they echo the foretelling of the long-expected Messiah by the prophet Isaiah.The origin of the music is uncertain.
