Woodwind Ensemble,Woodwind Trio Alto Saxophone,Baritone Saxophone,Clarinet - Level 4 - Digital Download SKU: A0.971660 Composed by Jeffrey Hoover. 20th Century,Contemporary. 30 pages. Musicart Publications #5992037. Published by Musicart Publications (A0.971660). Garage Sale Llama is for Bb clarinet and Eb Alto saxophone (or Eb baritone saxophone). Duration, 5 min. 30 sec. Garage Sale Llama is a humorous and energetic duo for clarinet and saxophone. About 2/3 of the way into the music, there is an optional narrative that the clarinetist can speak. The score and parts in this edition are arranged to be printed double-sided, with correct page turns.Program NoteA conversation recently overheard at a grocery store: 'Why do you go to garage sales? What do you buy at garage sales?' 'Anything and everything!' 'Anything, really? What about... a Llama? Would you buy a Llama at a garage sale?' 'Well?... Yes!... I'd buy a llama.'It was at a holiday party I had a close encounter with a garage sale llama. 'True story. The llama was in the back yard of the neighbor's house where the party was being held. Having a llama in the neighbor's backyard is wild, but to hear how the neighbor acquired the llama at a garage sale is unimaginable! Even Hollywood could not come up with such a tall tale. – Jeffrey HooverJeffrey Hoover's compositions- music ranging from soloist to symphony orchestra -have received recognition through the Universal Edition/SMP Press Contemporary Composition Award, the prestigious Trieste prize, the international Luigi Russolo competition, awards from Mu Phi Epsilon, the Lancaster Fine Arts Festival, grants, publications fellowships, and more than 25 commissions. He is a member of the ACME roster of Mu Phi Epsilon, recognized for distinguished achievement as a composer. One unique aspect of Hoover’s work is when he combines composition with his paintings, creating synergetic art that intrigues and captivate audiences and performers alike. His paintings are seen in exhibitions and in concerts where his paintings are projected while musicians perform his music. Hoover’s background as a performer includes both classical and jazz music, as saxophonist and conductor. His book The Arts and Society: Making New Worlds is published by Kendall Hunt Publishing.Hoover was born on September 11, 1959, in Anderson, Indiana. He holds a Ph.D. in Fine Arts (Composition and Interdisciplinary Fine Arts) from Texas Tech University, as well as an M.M. and a Bch.Sc. from Ball State University. His career in higher education has included both faculty and arts administration appointments. Published by Ars Nova Press (A0.1335564). Too Much For Our Thirstby Alexander BurdissArranged for Trombone and PianoDedicated to Courtney CarmackPerformance Time: approx. 7:00This is an adaptation for trombone of a piece originally written for tuba. The Eyes of the Poor from Paris SpleenWritten by Charles Baudelaire, Translated by Arthur Symons Ah! you want to know why I hate you to-day. It will probably be less easy for you to understand than for me to explain it to you; for you are, I think, the most perfect example of feminine impenetrability that could possibly be found. We had spent a long day together, and it had seemed to me short. We had promised one another that we would think the same thoughts and that our two souls should become one soul; a dream which is not original, after all, except that, dreamed by all men, it has been realised by none. In the evening you were a little tired, and you sat down outside a new café at the corner of a new boulevard, still littered with plaster and already displaying proudly its unfinished splendours. The café glittered. The very gas put on all the fervency of a fresh start, and lighted up with its full force the blinding whiteness of the walls, the dazzling sheets of glass in the mirrors, the gilt of cornices and mouldings, the chubby-cheeked pages straining back from hounds in leash, the ladies laughing at the falcons on their wrists, the nymphs and goddesses carrying fruits and pies and game on their heads, the Hebes and Ganymedes holding out at arm's-length little jars of syrups or parti-coloured obelisks of ices; the whole of history and of mythology brought together to make a paradise for gluttons. Exactly opposite to us, in the roadway, stood a man of about forty years of age, with a weary face and a greyish beard, holding a little boy by one hand and carrying on the other arm a little fellow too weak to walk. He was taking the nurse-maid's place, and had brought his children out for a walk in the evening. All were in rags. The three faces were extraordinarily serious, and the six eyes stared fixedly at the new café with an equal admiration, differentiated in each according to age. The father's eyes said: How beautiful it is! how beautiful it is! One would think that all the gold of the poor world had found its way to these walls. The boy's eyes said: How beautiful it is! how beautiful it is! But that is a house which only people who are not like us can enter. As for the little one's eyes, they were too fascinated to express anything but stupid and utter joy. Song-writers say that pleasure ennobles the soul and softens the heart. The song was right that evening, so far as I was concerned. Not only was I touched by this family of eyes, but I felt rather ashamed of our glasses and decanters, so much too much for our thirst. I turned to look at you, dear love, that I might read my own thought in you; I gazed deep into your eyes, so beautiful and so strangely sweet, your green eyes that are the home of caprice and under the sovereignty of the Moon; and you said to me: Those people are insupportable to me with their staring saucer- eyes! Couldn't you tell the head waiter to send them away? So hard is it to understand one another, dearest, and so incommunicable is thought, even between people who are in love!

David Warin Solomons #985853. Published by David Warin Solomons (A0.1402629). This song is based on parts of the poem by Paul Valéry Fragments du Narcisse which explains and ponders the idea of the origin of narcissism (self-love)The words are as followsMais moi, Narcisse aimé, je ne suis curieuxQue de ma seule essence ;Tout autre n’a pour moi qu’un cœur mystérieux,Tout autre n’est qu’absence.Ô mon bien souverain, cher corps, je n’ai que toi !Le plus beau des mortels ne peut chérir que soi... Baise-toi. Tremble de tout ton être !L’insaisissable amour que tu me vins promettrePasse, et dans un frisson, brise Narcisse, et fuit..English translation by D W SolomonsBut I, beloved Narcissus, am curious onlyabout my very beingeverything else has nothing more than a heart of mysteryeverything else is nothing but absenceOnly what I own, my dear sovereign body, is what I haveThe most beautiful of mortals cannot cherish anything more than itselfSweet and golden, is there a more holy idolwithin an entire forest, self-consumed and heldand set in the living azure by so many birds? Is there a more divine gift than the favour of the watersand a more adorable use of the dying daythan to return to me the honour of my face? Please don't be silent, please dare to replyBeautiful and cruel Narcissus, unreachable child owning what I hold dear but guarded by the nymphLet the two of us, you on my lips and I in my silencemake a prayer to the gods that they should be moved by so much lovethat they would keep the day held in its purple sunsetGods! only the pale and tender parts remain of the august day,It joins the fate of other days that were consumedIt goes down into the hell of deep memoryAlas, miserable body, it is time to become as oneBend down - kiss yourself - tremble with all your beingThe intangible love that you promisedhas gone by, and in a shiver, shatters Narcissus and flees.

Piano Quintet Cello,Piano,Viola,Violin - Level 5 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1129014 Composed by Igor Korneitchouk. 20th Century,Chamber,Contemporary. 57 pages. Studio at the Post #729537. Published by Studio at the Post (A0.1129014). Parts only (see A729534 for Score) Duration: 8 minutes, 5 Parts (2 violins, viola, cello, piano) with individual directions, parts averaging 5 – 7 pp. Description: When John Cage first invented the concept of prepared piano it was an invention born of necessity. (To realize his ideas Cage needed a percussion ensemble to accompany the dance troupe with which he worked. His solution to the impracticability of this was to create various percussion-like timbres from the studio piano which all dance spaces have.) In Heisenberg... all the instruments are engaged in a music made up of sound effects and unusual timbres; but because all the effects, in the case of the string instruments, must come from a limited number of strings, the preparation of these instruments are mutable — throughout the piece the performers are constantly preparing and un-preparing their instruments. This principle of mutable preparation has been carried over to the piano as well and thus the performance takes on the characteristic of an alien dance as a great deal of the work involves the logistics of setting up each succeeding phrase. Werner Heisenberg's great contribution to modern science is the Uncertainty Principle — the realization, expressed mathematically, that even in the hard sciences of physics and chemistry one could never be sure of anything. (According to The New Columbia Encyclopedia) “Werner Heisenberg — German physicist. One of the founders of the quantum theory, he is best known for his uncertainty principle, or indeterminacy principle, which states that it is impossible to determine with arbitrarily high accuracy both the position and momentum (essentially velocity) of a subatomic particle like the electron. The effect of this principle is to convert the laws of physics into statements about relative probabilities instead of absolute certainties.†(He won the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1932.).

Rhythm Section Bass Clef Instrument,Bass Guitar,Bass Trombone,Double Bass,Drum Set,Drums,Keyboard,Piano,Tenor Trombone,Trombone/Baritone B.C. - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.961211 Composed by Dorothy Fields and Jimmy McHugh. Arranged by Robert Coil. Contemporary,Jazz,Standards. 32 pages. Polished Brass #6348031. Published by Polished Brass (A0.961211). This arrangement for trombone quintet, with optional rhythm section, has an up-tempo beat. A solo section with chords and notated solos are included in each of the trombone parts to encourage solos. The first part requires a player with a confident c2, but all the other parts are accessible to good high school players. For variety, an optional rubato intro is suggested, which can be used in place of the up-tempo start. Originally published in 1935, this song was sung in the movie I by Frances Langford. She used this song to great affect while on tour with Bob Hope to entertain the troops in WW II. Many artists have had hits with this song, among them Louis Armstrong, Barbara Streisand, and Rod Stewart. Jimmy McHugh and Dorothy Fields collaborated on over 30 songs, including On The Sunny Side Of The Street and I Can't Give You Anything But Love. The arranger, Bob Coil, is a graduate of the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of music, where he studied bass trombone with Betty Glover. Dr. Coil is the leader of the Bones of Cincinnatus trombone ensemble in Cincinnati, OH.

Published by Mel Bay Publications - Digital Sheet Music (M0.31054MEB). ISBN 9781513477107. 8.75X11.75 inches. The island of Cape Breton and its close neighbor, Prince Edward Island in eastern Canada are home to two of the oldest, strongest, and most vibrant fiddling traditions in North America. Cape Breton gave rise to a professional Celtic-based fiddling scene to rival anything coming out of Scotland and Ireland. Prince Edward Island’s traditional fiddlers developed lively, idiosyncratic styles every bit as musically compelling as anything you’ll hear on archival recordings of iconic American old-time fiddlers from the Appalachians. This book features 136 tunes from these two distinct but related fiddling traditions, collected by the author directly from master fiddlers, and arranged note-for-note for clawhammer banjo with as much flavor and nuance as possible. These settings of reels, hornpipes, jigs, marches, strathspeys, airs, and other fiddle tunes are all eminently playable and fully benefit from the author’s half-century of experience playing banjo, arranging for banjo, writing banjo instruction books, and researching fiddle-music traditions. Here’s what you’ll find in this volume. 136 fiddle tunes arranged for clawhammer banjo in clear tablatureOver 40 musical examples and exercisesInstruction on basic and advanced techniquesFingering diagrams and detailed fingering suggestionsA systematic approach to playing up-the-neckA thorough treatment of playing triplets, grace notes, and other characteristic ornaments in clawhammerGuides on how to approach playing various kinds of fiddle tunesA framework for understanding the modes encountered in fiddle musicHistorical notes on the tunes and musical traditionsBiographical information on source fiddlers169 audio illustrations available online Note: Most audio illustrations for the tunes in this book are drawn directly from the author’s CDs, Devil in the Kitchen, Frails and Frolics, Island Boy, and Northern Banjo.

Piano Solo - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.790173 Composed by Ludwig van Beethoven. Arranged by Ludwig van Beethoven. Classical,Concert. Score. 17 pages. Diamond S Music #5755359. Published by Diamond S Music (A0.790173). Rondo a Capriccio in G Major, Op.129 - Rage Over A Lost Penny - Beethoven - Piano Solo. The Rondo alla ingharese quasi un capriccio in G major, Op. 129 is a piano rondo by Ludwig van Beethoven. It is better known by the title Rage Over a Lost Penny, Vented in a Caprice. This title appears on the autograph manuscript, but not in Beethoven's hand, and has been attributed to his friend Anton Schindler. It is a favorite with audiences and is frequently performed as a showpiece. Robert Schumann wrote of the work that it would be difficult to find anything merrier than this whim... It is the most amiable, harmless anger, similar to that felt when one cannot pull a shoe from off the foot, citing the work as an instance of Beethoven's earthliness against those fixated upon a transcendental image of the composer. This new edition also contains a brief biography of Beethoven, some historical information about the piece, and a facsimile of a portion of the original manuscript. Published by Boothe Publishing (A0.1069973). After being married for several years I realized that I had never written a love song for my wife. So, one day during a lull in guitar lessons I wrote her a song. I truly believe she is the light in my life and that without her my life would be about as interesting as a stone. When I am with her I feel that I can accomplish anything. She inspires me to be better than I am because she is in every way better than I am. She has more patience, kindness, is more caring and less concerned about how others view her than anyone else I know. I'm glad I finally worked up the courage to ask her to marry me. I was afraid to open my mouth and speak what was on my mind. After many months, when I thought I was going to lose her completely, I opened up my feelings to her, and to my great relief she had some of the same feelings that I had. She didn't say yes she would marry me right away, (I had to lock her in a room to get that response) however, over time she did decide of her own free will and choice to marry me. Thank you Karen Ziegelbauer, you are the best.

Arranged by Rob Bushnell. Classical,Easter,Film/TV,Opera,Romantic Period. Score and individual part. 9 pages. RBMusic #909019. Published by RBMusic (A0.1320503). In 1889, a struggling composer called Pietro Mascagni heard about a sponsored competition for one-act operas, specifically for young Italian composers who had not yet had an opera performed, only two months before the deadline. With little time, he selected the subject for his opera and asked his childhood friend, Giovanni Targioni-Tozzetti (who was helped by Guido Menasci), to write a libretto for him. Mascagni selected a story that he had seen as a play in Milan in early 1884 by realist writer Giovanni Verga, “Rustic Chivalryâ€, or Cavalleria rusticana. A passionate love tragedy featuring seduction, adultery, revenge and murder, it is surprising set on Easter morning.Mascagni received only a few verses at a time from his librettists, but he was not worried because he had the opera clear in his mind: “I identified with the drama to such an extent that I felt it within myself in terms of music.†After two months’ of work, the music for Cavalleria rusticana was finished but he feared the opera would fail and put the music in a draw. Fortunately, his wife sent it off, he unanimously won the competition and was soon the talk of Europe. (At the premiere in May 1890 in Rome, Mascagni received no fewer than 60 curtain calls.) Unfortunately, it was a one-hit wonder with Mascagni unable to repeat its success, saying towards the end of his life that “it is a pity I wrote Cavalleria first for I was crowned before I became king.†He died, penniless, in 1945.Today, few people have heard of Mascagni’s name, and, if they have, it is rarely in relation to anything but one piece from Cavalleria rusticana, the Intermezzo. A short piece of purely orchestral music that is uses to denote the passage of time, the orchestration is very simple but it is such an indulgently beautiful melody (based on a hymn heard earlier in the short opera) that perfectly captures the peace of country living in Sicily against the intense feelings of the main characters and the looming tragedy to come. The piece is so popular that (along with the “Easter Hymn†from the same opera), it is the only reason Mascagni features in the Classic FM’s Hall of Fame. The piece was used in the 1980 film Raging Bull and the 1990 film The Godfather Part III.This arrangement (for solo trombone or euphonium and piano accompaniment) includes an alternative part for trombone/euphonium in treble clef. Piano Solo - Level 4 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1000329 Composed by Johann Sebastian Bach, Paul Eber, and Steve Boudreau. Arranged by Steve Boudreau. 20th Century,Jazz,Sacred. Score. 2 pages. Steve Boudreau #6681051. Published by Steve Boudreau (A0.1000329). The Bach Chorales are ultimate examples of melodies creating harmonies, the parts coming together to form a whole. They are also great examples of a musician taking a melody and making a new arrangement of it, like jazz musicians do today. This piece is a combination of two chorale melodies that Bach arranged, originally based on hymns by 16th-century composer Paul Eber. For context, Bach set the melody around 200 years after it was written, and I re-worked the melodies with my own harmonies nearly 300 years after that. The first job I had when I moved back to Ottawa from Boston was as a church pianist. At one point there was a two-month stretch where I was in charge of programming the instrumental music we played, and I challenged myself to come up with new arrangements every week- the way Bach would have in his time, just on a much smaller scale. This was a terrific creative outpouring of music for me, and it renewed my enormous respect for the church music community and the work involved. For this piece I took two seemingly unrelated chorales (they are actually from the same Cantata, BWV 127) and attached them, using their distant keys of A Major and F Major to set up an interesting modulation halfway through. I had to actively try out some more modern harmonic progressions to take the overall sound of the piece further away from Bach's version. One of my favourite moments is when you finish the C major resolution and then repeat back into F# Minor at the top for improvising. In the solo piano version this surprising cut doesn't occur unless you take a second pass through the piece, so I encourage you to try repeating the piece even if you don't feel comfortable embellishing or changing anything the second time around.

Flute (doubling bassflute) baritone saxophone (or bass clarinet) and string trio - difficult - Digital Download SKU: S9.Q6901 Composed by Benjamin Schweitzer. This edition: performance score. Das Stück fordert Spieler und Hörer heraus, sich auf ungewohnte Klänge und komplizierte Rhythmen einzulassen, wobei die Interpreten vielseitige moderne Spieltechniken erproben können. Downloadable, performance score. Duration 9 minutes. Schott Music - Digital #Q6901. Published by Schott Music - Digital (S9.Q6901). One of the most bodacious episodes in the Kalevala, the Finnish national epic tells how Joukahainen challenges the old, wise singer Vainamoinen to a competition, during which Vainamoinen sings him up to his neck into the swamp. This scene, combining stunning and comical elements, is a great subject for a musical composition, but also holds a certain risk: it would perhaps be too obvious to depict it through an abundant, romantically expressive cantilena. This would indeed be quite dull and conventional – instead, Sumpfgesang is based on the imagination of Vainamoinen’s chant and is anything but melodical (in a traditional sense) and ostensibly clamant. The paradoxical idea of the piece could rather be described as a 'chant without melody', characterised by an inner tension, power and diversity as well as a fragile and bizarre musical language in parts which avoids everything superficially 'melodic' yet still creates a 'breathing‘ dramaturgy and suspense. The quintet has largely been split into even smaller instrumental units, but there is never a single voice which dominates – in fact, the few solos are the most sparse episodes of the composition. The sections are often marked by clear cuts and harsh contrasts rather than smooth transitions, but the musical language is also colourful and sophisticated in parts, building more and more tension which culminates in an unexpectedly climactic tutti. Benjamin Schweitzer.
