Piano Solo - Level 5 - Digital Download SKU: A0.828227 Composed by John Hatton. Arranged by Paul Thurmond. 20th Century,Baroque,Christian,Sacred. Score. 7 pages. Paul Thurmond #4968929. Published by Paul Thurmond (A0.828227). Tune: DUKE STREETUse: Prelude, PostludeOne Sunday my church was singing Jesus Shall Reign Where’er the Sun as the opening hymn. It’s our tradition that the last stanza of a hymn is sung in unison, so that I as the organist can change the harmonization and keep things interesting. Sometimes I know ahead of time what I’m going to do, and sometimes I make it up on the spot.On this particular morning I planned on being spontaneous. (Can spontaneity be planned?) When we got to the final stanza, I threw on the 16′ pedal reed and went to town.I don’t know if this is the case for all musicians, but while I’m playing my brain is working on several different levels. Most of these are involved in actually playing the music, but there’s also a running commentary on how things are going. This commentary is usually really boring: It’s going okay. It’s going okay. It’s going okay. Sometimes the messages are more interesting: Uh-oh. She just dropped her mute. I missed that chord; remember to circle it when we’re done. My page turner appears to be on fire. So: We’re in the final stanza of Jesus Shall Reign Where’er the Sun. Big, majestic hymn. Over a hundred congregants and choir members are enthusiastically singing in unison. I’m leading them from the organ with an improvised accompaniment that involves all of my limbs. It’s fair to say that I was concentrating hard.Suddenly the commentary part of my brain breaks in: Dude, your feet are totally playing Canon in D. Cool!Canon in D is the most famous work of Johann Pachelbel, a German composer who preceded Bach by a few decades. It’s overused at weddings, but it’s actually a really good piece of music. The original is for three violins and a basso continuo part, which would usually have been played by harpsichord and cello. In this case, the basso continuo plays the same eight measures again and again throughout the piece. This technique of repetition is called a ground bass. While that’s going on, the violins play several different themes on top of it.When I was improvising that Sunday, my feet had accidentally wandered into that ground bass part, which happened to fit nicely with the melody we were singing. During the sermon (sorry Pastor!) I started going through the violin themes in my head, seeing if any of them could also match up with the hymn tune. Some of them worked and some didn’t. I decided to write a sort of theme and variations, where the hymn tune appears in various forms. Sometimes it’s played along with one of the violin themes, and sometimes a violin theme serves as an interlude on its own. And except for one passage, the left hand is always playing some version of the basso continuo theme. I also changed the meter from 4/4 to 3/4 to make it more interesting. It culminates in a climax worthy of a king. I hope you enjoy it.

The Peanut Vendor (el Manisero)
Brass Quintet: 2 trumpets, horn, trombone, tuba
Brass Quintet Horn,Trombone,Trumpet,Tuba - Level 4 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1221432

Brass Quintet Horn,Trombone,Trumpet,Tuba - Level 4 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1221432 By Stan Kenton & His Orchestra. By L. Wolfe Gilbert, Marion Sunshine, and Moises Simons. Arranged by F. Leslie Smith. Jazz,Latin,Multicultural,Pop,World. 39 pages. Sweetwater Brass Press #817754. Published by Sweetwater Brass Press (A0.1221432). Can a brass quintet sound like Stan Kenton’s 19-piece big band? No, not really:  no saxophones, no rhythm section, no Milt Bernhart, no Maynard Ferguson, no Bill Russo, no Conte Candoli, no . . .  Well, you get the picture.  But five brass instruments can play in the Kenton style.  And that’s what this is:  “The Peanut Vendor†in the style of the Stan Kenton Orchestra.   Moisés Simons’ “El Manisero†(“The Peanut Vendorâ€) was first recorded in the late 1920s.  The melody was relatively simple yet exotic sounding; the lyrics, a Cuban street vendor’s pitch for selling his bags of peanuts.  Consumers bought more than a million copies of the sheet music, and the song supposedly led to a “rumba craze†in the U.S. and Europe (although the song is not really a rumba!).     Don Azpiazú and his Havana Casino Orchestra recorded the song for RCA Victor in 1930 with Antonio MachÃn on the vocal; its sales may well have been more than the million-plus sheet music copies sold.     English lyrics were added by L. Wolfe Gilbert and Marion Sunshine and the song became “The Peanut Vendor.† One estimate is that nearly 200 recordings have been made.  That’s a lot of peanuts.    Stan Kenton revived “The Peanut Vendor†in 1947 when he first recorded it for Capitol Records.  His version was completely instrumental.  Rhythm and saxophones opened the number and established the background; later the trombone section added emphasis.  A trombone solo first stated the melody but eventually the five-person trumpet section took over with what one writer referred to as “shrieking dissonances.† “The Peanut Vendor†subsequently became one of Kenton’s most requested numbers and he recorded it at least three more times.   This brass quintet arrangement, of course, has access to only two trumpets.  So the good news is that all five players get a chance with the melody.  Kenton’s extended opening trombone solo is shared by Trombone and Tuba.  The “shrieking dissonances†are performed not only by Trumpets but also by Horn in F and Trombone.  The bad news is that all five players have to take a turn with the continuing rhythmic background melody.  Written in 4/4 time, the suggested tempo is 184 BPM in a Latin style.  Kenton’s version is in B-flat major; this arrangement lowers it to A-flat major so that most notes are within the normal playing range of the instruments.  (Don’t worry; the “shrieking dissonances†are still there!)     Completed in 2023, performance time runs about 3 minutes, 37 seconds. The arranger, Les Smith, will be happy to provide substitute parts (for example, treble clef baritone for trombone) at no charge.  He would like to receive your suggestions, comments, corrections and criticisms.  For more arrangements by Les, enter Sweetwater Brass Press (without the quotation marks) in the Sheet Music Plus or Sheet Music Direct search box.  (Also, purchase of this piece entitles you to your choice of another of his arrangements at no charge; send a copy of your purchase receipt directly to him at lessmith61@bellsouth.net.).

Piano Solo - Level 2 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1041003 By Isadar. By Isadar. Classical,Contemporary,Jazz,New Age. Score. 9 pages. Mainya Music Publishing (BMI) #645734. Published by Mainya Music Publishing (BMI) (A0.1041003). Contains:End Of The Line - taken from the Isadar solo piano collection, The Journey (available soon on SheetMusicDirect and SheetMusicPlus) Sounds like: Liz Story, George Winston, early Windham Hill solo piano artists Transcribed by: David Shenton ( https://www.shentonmusic.com/ ) verbatim to the sound recording Album & Songbook review by:Kathy Parsons (MainlyPiano.com): Isadar’s fourth solo piano album is a blend of smooth jazz and new age, showing both his impressive technique and sensitivity to melody. Several of the eight selections are free-form and improvisational, revealing some of Liz Story’s influence on his music. Some of Isadar’s earlier recordings have very dark, moody sections, but this one stays fairly upbeat and optimistic without being ear candy. The music is complex enough to sink your teeth into, and yet is accessible enough to enjoy as a backdrop to a quiet dinner or an evening with a good book. Joyful Running begins the journey with an exuberant and uplifting piece that reminds me a little of some of Spencer Brewer’s bouncier compositions. Fountain of Life is a beautiful piece with a water-like flow that never stops in its 10 1/2 minutes. I listened to this CD several times without realizing that this song was that long. It flows and meanders so effortlessly that it seemed no longer than the other seven selections, most of which are between four and five minutes in length. Unstructured and free, this is one of my favorite tracks. I also really like the title track, which is even more abstract and unstructured. The tone is of searching and moving forward. End of the Line is my favorite on this album. Very introspective and contemplative, this seems to be a very personal piece. It is the most somber track, but one still senses hope despite the ending of something dear and important. Or maybe it’s simply the end of the journey and the dread of returning to real life - I feel this way on the last day of my vacations! It is a wonderful and moving closing to an excellent album. The companion songbook is expertly transcribed and engraved by David Shenton of New York Music Publishing. The layout of the music is clear and uncluttered, and the notation includes pedal markings and dynamics that allow the pianist to express the music as closely as possible to how Isadar played it on the recording. A few of the pieces are quite long and require a more advanced pianist who is able to express the nuances that keep the recording so interesting, but several of the pieces are well within the capabilities of upper intermediate players. Some of the rhythms are a little bit tricky, but the majority of the left hand parts are running eighth notes, which make it easier. None of the key signatures are difficult, and none of the chords have a reach of more than an octave, making this music very playable for smaller hands. My favorite pieces to play in this book are Joyful Running, Voice of God (Thanksgiving), Smoke Signals, and End of the Line. Isadar is an artist on both Enlightened Piano Radio & Whisperings Solo Piano Radio, the latter featuring some of today's biggest names in solo piano music, including Ludovico Einaudi, David Nevue, Brian Crain, Kevin Kern, Robin Spielberg, Michele McLaughlin, Philip Wesley and over 300 more... C Instrument - Level 2 - Digital Download SKU: A0.842476 By The Fray. By Isaac Slade and Joseph King. Arranged by Ben Clapton. Rock. Lead Sheet / Fake Book. 3 pages. Ben Clapton #4597303. Published by Ben Clapton (A0.842476). You Found Me was released by American rock band The Fray in 2008. It was their third single to sell 2 million downloads in the US, and marked The Fray's first number one hit in Australia. This is a lead sheet for the song, which has the melody and lyrics, and guitar chords. The song is written in B, and it has capo chords at capo 4 to utilise open chords. From Wikipedia:In an interview, lead singer and pianist Isaac Slade expressed his meaning behind the lyrics of the song:'You Found Me' is such a great song you should really listen to it. I love it as if it were my own child. The heart ache, the let down that comes with life. Sometimes you're let down, sometimes you're the one who lets someone else down. It gets hard to know who you can trust, who you can count on. This song came out of a tough time, and I'm still right in the thick of it. There's some difficult circumstances my family and friends have been going through over the past year or so and it can be overwhelming. It wears on me. It demands so much of my faith to keep believing, keep hoping in the unseen. Sometimes the tunnel has a light at the end, but usually they just look black as night. This song is about that feeling, and the hope that I still have, buried deep in my chest. In another interview Isaac Slade declared that:I kept getting these phone calls from home – tragedy after tragedy... If there is some kind of Person in charge of this planet – are they sleeping? Smoking? Where are they? I just imagined running into God standing on a street corner like Bruce Springsteen, smoking a cigarette, and I'd have it out with Him.In a Reuters article about the album, Slade stated that the lyrics for You Found Me were written in 2007, and that the song asks about the problem of evil, why bad things happen to good people, after some of their friends and family went through very tough times. Many others say that the song represents the reason we cope with things and how abandonment plays a role in everyday life.

Concert Band - Level 4 - Digital Download SKU: A0.986863 Composed by Ben Pritchard. Arranged by Ben Pritchard. 20th Century,Jazz,Latin,Rock. Score and parts. 19 pages. Benjamin Pritchard #5465. Published by Benjamin Pritchard (A0.986863). This piece was originally written for jazz ensemble and then arranged for concert band. This was done, in part, to make available concert band literature that utilizes jazz/rock instruments (guitar, bass, piano) and improvisation. There are many arrangements of rock and pop tunes available to band directors. While those arrangements sometimes include bass parts they rarely, if ever, have guitar or piano/keyboard parts. Why not? Why not include these parts, even if they are optional? In addition, I’ve noticed that there is very little concert band literature that involves improvisation. Again, why not? I believe that this is the concert band literature of the future – the integrated utilization of electric guitar, keyboards, and improvisation. This piece is my first attempt at such a venture. Having just finished the premier performance of the original jazz ensemble version of 7 to 9 I thought it would be a good platform. Most of 7 to 9 transitions between 7/4 and 9/4. It is a fun, quirky piece with a Latin feel. There is a short 5-bar swing section in the middle for open solos. There is also a one chord solo section later in the piece for less experienced improvisers. The students will really enjoy putting this together, especially with the electric guitar, piano, and bass. It adds a completely new dimension to the concert band as well as an overall excitement. The piece ends with a long building Latin groove with a jam feel to it. The guitarist ends this build with an improvised solo which soars above the rest of the band. It is a fun piece to play but requires a great deal of focus due to the changing meter and odd phrase lengths and entrances. There is only a midi recording available at this time. A live recording will be available soon.

Choral Choir (SA) - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.873034 Composed by Sally Whitwell. Pop. Octavo. 11 pages. Sally Whitwell #3869017. Published by Sally Whitwell (A0.873034). Composer’s Note - Happy PlaceI’m a lesbian who came-of-age/came-out in the mid 1990s, which means I caught the tail end of those lesbian stereotypes you used to hear about. It made me feel like I’d never inherited The Lesbian Gene. I was never one of the herbal tea sipping, yoga loving, hemp textiles wearing, hippie happy clappy campers of that time. I had girlfriends who were and I tried to humour them sometimes but it was always a strain.I had this one girlfriend who made me go camping once, a gathering with her hippie pagan friends. It was all inoffensive enough, I was having a very nice time sitting in the shade reading my book. Rather stupidly, I made the mistake of letting someone rope me into a thing called Drumming The Boundary. They thought I’d be good at it, being a professional musician. I thought it would probably please my girlfriend if I got involved, so I agreed to go along. To my surprise, the drums they’d set up were great instruments, some really top quality djembes that you’d be paying some good money for, so I made the rash assumption that the leader of this activity actually knew what she was doing. We were instructed to start drumming a heartbeat together, whereupon I discovered that these are people who couldn’t even play a plain old crotchet beat in ensemble. But they seemed to think they were playing in time, swooning and swaying and closing their eyes to ‘feel’ the music. It was starting to make me giggle. These were presumably the same lesbians I’d seen out in Sydney nightclubs who couldn’t dance in time with an electronic beat that repeatedly hits you over the head with its obviousness?! Once I’d had that thought, I couldn’t help my giggle becoming a full-blown guffaw. The dreadlocked hempy lady in charge glared at me, telling me I needed to relax into really feeling the heartbeat. Could she not see that it was because my whole body was shaking with hysterical laughter at their arhythmic playing? Honestly...I guess I just really don’t like hippies. There, I said it out loud. I tried, I tried really hard, but I just prefer my city life. It’s my Happy Place.-- Sally Whitwell

Score and parts. 14 pages. Derek Hasted #457332. Published by Derek Hasted (A0.850660). El CHOCLO - GUITAR TRIO/LARGE ENSEMBLEFor Classical or Acoustic Guitar - sometimes it's erroneously listed here as Electric Guitar.Derek Hasted writes Said by some to be the definitive Tango, this piece has been recorded by musicians the world over and it positively exudes energy. This arrangement, for 3 guitars or large ensemble, will suit a mixed-ability ensemble - the three lines are of different standards. Skilled players will find that good articulation can really make the piece come alive. So there really is something for everyone. (Please note that I have also produced a separate duet arrangement which suits two equally matched players) The arrangement has the repeated sections written out in full to remove the possibility of a mistake in performance, and the entire piece can be played twice through if desired. There are plenty of opportunities for volume changes and tone changes, and I hope youâ??ll experiment and find something for your ensemble that makes the performance â??yoursâ?. Indeed, across the performances on YouTube there are different rhythms at certain points in the tune - notes that are articulated aggressively in one version might be teased longer in another - the choices are yours to make - the soundclip on the SMP website shows you what I mean by a tight articulation compared to the score. I hope you enjoy playing this piece!

Piano Solo - Level 2 - Digital Download SKU: A0.895221 Composed by Traditional. Arranged by Fernando Ramos. Christmas,Pop,Traditional. Score. 3 pages. Fernando Ramos #6134249. Published by Fernando Ramos (A0.895221). Hear it on YouTube:https://youtu.be/5t8X77Spo-kI make piano solo arrangements for my students of songs that they love! My goal is to create something that sounds beautiful as a standalone piece of music, but most importantly, that it actually makes pianistic sense. Sometimes I even hide exercises in the arrangements that I want a student to work on. All of my arrangements are usually made for a specific student, so the results will always vary. This arrangement was made for an early intermediate student in level 3 of the Alfred's Masterwork Classics series. She is working on another piece where the RH crosses over quite a bit, so I decided to create a good practice etude-ish version of What Child is This, since we are also preparing for a Christmas Recital. The reprise of the main melody is identical in the RH and LH, except the RH crosses over the LH the entire time. Overall, the piece has a very mysterious feel that really suits the melody and lovely to hear. Be careful if the tempo is slowed down too much because the dissonances might stick out more than preferred, so the LH will have to be played at pp in order to not distract from the pretty melody.I give fingering and pedal suggestions.

Small Ensemble - Digital Download SKU: A0.1017920 Composed by Andreas Kleinert. Contemporary. Score and parts. 1 pages. Andreas Kleinert #6343421. Published by Andreas Kleinert (A0.1017920). Now winter has passed, but you can also play it in summer! I meant a certain quiet intimate and dreamy atmosphere which occurs when everything is covered with fresh snow. In order to perceive the melody for itself it is good when the melody first is performed one voice alone before the second voice joins. First the melody is the upper voice, then the lower voice. The second voice is different both times. Both voices are a bit rhythmically idiosyncratic and can´t really be counted according to the written bar. They should flow there just calm and weightless.

Choral Choir (SATB) - Level 4 - Digital Download SKU: A0.871111 Composed by Paul S. Jones. Christian,Christmas,Sacred. Octavo. 9 pages. Paul S. Jones #3926031. Published by Paul S. Jones (A0.871111). A colorful, warm and powerful SATB setting of this familiar text for SATB chorus and piano, with an entirely new tune. At times sober and other times triumphant, this setting is suitable for Advent, Christmas, or really any time of year because it covers the entire Christian story. Requires a good choir. (Parts for strings, brass, flute and timpani are available by contacting the composer directly). .

Guitar Ensemble Guitar - Level 2 - Digital Download SKU: A0.797770 By Billy Joel. By Billy Joel. Arranged by Derek Hasted. Contemporary,Pop. Score and parts. 24 pages. Derek Hasted #5299683. Published by Derek Hasted (A0.797770). UPTOWN GIRL - THREE or FOUR GUITARS or LARGE ENSEMBLEFor Classical or Acoustic Guitar - sometimes it's erroneously listed here as Electric Guitar.Derek Hasted writes This very playable but satisfying arrangement suits 3 guitars, 4 guitars or (even better!) a large ensemble. This is a piece that's full of hidden gems...For an audience it's absolutely full of uplifting key changes - not just one on the last chorus! This arrangement starts in A, but visits the keys of F, C, D and E more than once, and each one seems to lift the mood yet higher. And then there's a gentle fade away to a quiet finish. For an adult trio, it's an easy rhythmic crowd-pleaser that any audience will like. Each line has its own contribution to the overall big wall of toe-tapping sound. For a guitar teacher, it's a great exercise in rhythm and a chance to show students the half-diminished chord (the m7b5) and the poignancy of the flattened ninth. And indeed to remind them that there's more to good music than just three chords! For a school teacher, this trio comes with a potential life-saver - there's a second version of the Guitar 2 part that is split into two separate parts - 2a and 2b. These parts are ideal for a mixed ability ensemble where one or two players are new starters with guitar (yes, the Guitar 2b part really is that easy!) So play as a trio or a quartet - the choice is yours, and rest assured that an ensemble of widely differing abilities will be able to tackle it to great effect.I hope you enjoy this piece as much as my adult Guitar Workshop ensemble does!
