Concert Band - Level 5 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1082229 Composed by Jeff Tyzik. Arranged by Jeff Tyzik. Latin. Score and parts. 31 pages. Jeff Tyzik/Macaroni Music #686377. Published by Jeff Tyzik/Macaroni Music (A0.1082229). Three Latin Dances was composed for the Eastman Wind Ensemble at the request of Mark Scatterday in September of 2018. In the past twenty years, Mark has been very instrumental in encouraging me to compose wind music. I am grateful for the many wind ensemble projects and recordings we have collaborated on including IMAGES, our CD that was released in October 2018. I've always been attracted to the music of great Latin composers including de Falla, Gimenez, Chapi, Piazzolla, Ginastera, Lacuona and many others. In this short suite, I used three different popular Latin dance forms. The first dance section is based on the Danzón, a Cuban dance that is slow, formal and elegant. The Danzón transitions into a Cha Cha, another Cuban dance that is a medium tempo rhythmic dance that I first experienced during my student days at Eastman when I played in local Latin bands. After a brief recap of the Danzón another transition evolves into a Malambo, an Argentine dance that is exciting, up tempo and whose roots can be traced back to the 1600s. As one might imagine, the percussion section is very busy and featured throughout from the elegant and lyrical introduction to the exciting finish. As an alumni of the EWE under Donald Hunsberger, it is an honor to have this preeminent Eastman ensemble premiere this new suite with Mark Scatterday conducting at Severance Hall in Cleveland on May 7, 2019.

By Bill Matthiesen. For Keyboard (Piano). Latin American. 96 pages. Published by Mel Bay Publications - Digital Sheet Music
ISBN 9781609746384. This collection showcases the syncopated piano music of Latin American during the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. It features Latin rhythms, which are really African rhythms brought to the Americas by slaves and applied to the music of the European colonists. These rhythms are varied and complex and so is their history. They've had a widespread and profound influence on the evolution of popular music not only in Latin America, but also in the United States. The most obvious offshoots are the tango in Argentine and Uruguay and most of the other popular dances of South and Central America, as well as ragtime and jazz in the United States. Jelly Roll Morton claimed this "Latin tinge" is the essential element that distinguishes jazz from ragtime. These rhythms are the musical roots of groups like "The Buena Vista Social Club."Includes historic tangos written by Ignacio Cervantes - Cuba, Manuel Saumell - Cuba, Juan Morel Campos - Puerto Rico, Jose Quinton - Puerto Rico, Ernesto Nazareth -Brazil, Tomas Leon - Mexico, Sebastian Yradier - Spain, Eduardo Sanchez du Fuentas - Cuba, Will Tyers - USA, Vincente Greco - Argentina, Anselmo Rosendo (Mendizabal) - Argentina, Angel Villoldo - Argentina, Eduardo Arolas - Argentina, Juan Maglio - Argentina.

El Choclo (“Kiss of Fire”)

Brass Quintet - Intermediate - Digital Download Arranged by F. Leslie Smith. Score, Set of Parts. 28 pages. Published by Sweetwater Brass Press
That most sensual of ballroom dances, the tango, originated during the 1880s along the Río de la Plata, the confluence of the Uruguay and Paraná rivers. It got started among the enslaved peoples and the lower classes, became popular and eventually spread to other countries.
The tango is closely identified with Argentina, and Argentine musician Á.G. Villoldo was instrumental in developing the music of the dance. He supposedly wrote this particular tango to celebrate the proprietor of a nightclub, a gentleman whose nickname was “El Choclo” (in English: “The Corn Cob”!).
“El Choclo” premiered in Buenos Aires in 1903 and became one of Argentina’s most popular tangos. Dance orchestras recorded instrumental versions of "El Choclo." It achieved widespread popularity in the United States in 1952 when Lester Allen and Robert Hill provided it with English-language lyrics and a new name: “Kiss of Fire.” A number of singers made recordings of “Kiss of Fire” that year, the most popular of which was that of Georgia Gibbs; her “Kiss of Fire” disc reached the top spot on the Billboard chart.
The melody for “El Choclo” is exciting, stirring, stimulating, electrifying; in other words, perfect for a brass group. In this arrangement Horn in F has the melody throughout much of the piece, but Trumpets, Trombone and Tuba also take turns with the lead. The piece opens in the key of D minor, switches to D major (for the part of the melody that was not in the Georgia Gibbs version) and finally goes back to D minor for the recap of the main melody and a dramatic conclusion. The suggested tempo is 120 but may certainly be played faster. All notes are within the normal playing range of the five instruments. However the Tango rhythm lies mostly in the bass line, so Tuba and sometimes Trombone have frequent octave and octave-plus jumps.
Completed in 2020, performance time for “El Choclo” runs about 2 minutes, 50 seconds. The arranger, Les Smith, will be happy to provide substitute parts (for example, treble clef baritone for trombone) at no charge; contact him directly at lessmith61@bellsouth.net.
