The song is one of Tom Waits' signature works and has been covered by artists including Rod Stewart. For this arrangement I was asked to faithfully recreate the original Waits recording as a piano accompaniment score. The arrangement is intermediate level including clef changes as the right hand moves in and out of the lower middle register. Extracts of the original Waltzing Matilda melody can also be found in the piano score, referencing the string parts on the recording. The vocal line and lyrics are provided for reference.

The arrangement features plenty of unison writing to help younger players establish confidence within their sections as well as more independence between sections. An open section provides a chance for everyone in the band to have a go at taking a solo. Backing figures are provided on parts and can be played at the director's discretion. It is a blues in F with a grooving shuffle feel. In the opening choruses, the big band is divided into three smaller combos playing the head, backing riffs and rhythmic stabs. Be sure to have the players listen carefully to each other and to be aware of which combo they belong to. Solo space is provided for the 2nd Trumpet and 1st Trombone players, although this could be opened up to feature other band members. The solo section is followed by a Sax section soli before the head returns to take the chart out. The inspiration for this title came from my first car - a 1970 FIAT 124 - which provided me with many years of enjoyable motoring. This is a lively, up-tempo swing piece that was inspired by the mayhem and frustrations of rush hour travel. The arrangement of the main theme features a small combo of Alto Sax, Trumpet, Trombone and Guitar with the rhythm section providing rhythmic counterpoint. Solo space is provided for 1st Tenor Sax, 2nd Trumpet, 1st Alto Sax and 1st Trombone. The solo sections may be opened up for players to take additional choruses if desired. A shout chorus provides the band with an opportunity to let loose. There is a fair amount of independence between sections, rhythmic shots and some fragmented melodic ideas that will require careful attention to execute accurately. G'day from Australia.This little piano miniature is from my prize winning composition Audacious Binary Forms, which won the senior prize in the very prestigious Jean Bogan Prize for Piano Composition 2016.Michael Kieran Harvey, who is considered by many as the greatest living Australian pianist, performed the work. The right hand is part melodic and part three part chordal.
