It's full of wit and humour and makes a great encore piece for any programme. This arrangement for Piano Quartet (Violin, Viola, Cello, Piano) is very approachable and gives all of the instruments something of interest to play. This is a real feel-good piece which everyone will enjoy! Originally from Glasgow, Timothy studied at the Royal College of Music, London and the Banff Centre, Canada. He was the Pianist for the Isis Piano Trio and Ballet Creations and is now in demand as an accompanist and chamber musician having performed with artists such as Dame Sarah Connolly and Tasmin Little. He has toured widely internationally and has recorded for BBC Radio 3 and Classic FM as well as TV appearances in Russia and Egypt. Murray’s compositions have been recorded by The Fibbonnaci Sequence and Piers Lane among others with reviews such as ‘Corruscating’ (Independent) and ‘Highly imaginative’ (The Sunday Times). This Fantasia (or Fantasy) for piano, vocal soloists, chorus, and orchestra, Op. 80, was composed in 1808 by a 38 year old Beethoven.The Fantasia was hastily written to serve as the grand finale for a (personal) benefit concert on the 22nd December 1808 which included premiers of his 5th and 6th symphonies, the 4th Piano concerto and the Mass in C. Beethoven took the opportunity to use the forces available to make this comparatively short piece for piano, orchestra, and a choral finale where he, the soloist, could showoff just how good he was.Sadly, this work is seldom performed because who wants to hire a choir for just 2 minutes of music and an orchestra for not that much longer. This quintet version addresses this by allowing a much smaller ensemble to enjoy performing this utterly delightful work. The piano part is basically what Beethoven wrote, however it has been suitably modified in places to allow the piano to fit into the overall ensemble.

Die Liebe des Nachsten (The Love of Neighbour) was composed by the Master, L. van Beethoven. It is the second of the Sechs Lieder (Six Songs), published in 1803, which foreshadowed the Art Songs of the Romantic Era. Originally for Voice and Piano, I have arranged it for Instrumental Quartet. My arrangement stays true to Beethoven's intent to capture the passion of the original text in the music. (The texts are all sacred poems by Gellert.) Without the presence of lyrics I needed to create musical interest and interpretation, so I realized inner voices and polyphony out of his original homophonic accompaniment. I added new shape to individual lines, altered phrasing, elaborated rhythms, and in true Beethoven style added more dynamic markings. The mood and meaning are now stunningly portrayed through music alone. Die Liebe, in such a short piece, has chant, homophonic, and polyphonic sections with varied articulations and dynamics as it joyfully proclaims that if you love God you must also love your neighbour.

It is the fourth of the Sechs Lieder (Six Songs), published in 1803, which foreshadowed the Art Songs of the Romantic Era. Originally for Voice and Piano, I have arranged it for Instrumental Quartet. My arrangement stays true to Beethoven's intent to capture the passion of the original text in the music. (The texts are all sacred poems by Gellert.) Without the presence of lyrics I needed to create musical interest and interpretation, so I realized inner voices and polyphony out of his original homophonic accompaniment. I added new shape to individual lines, altered phrasing, elaborated rhythms, and in true Beethoven style added more dynamic markings. The mood and meaning are now stunningly portrayed through music alone. Die Ehres Gottes is full of joyous majesty and wonder. It has been made into a popular anthem and hymn under the title The Heavens Are Telling. Â

This Fantasia (or Fantasy) for piano, vocal soloists, chorus, and orchestra, Op. 80, was composed in 1808 by a 38 year old Beethoven.The Fantasia was hastily written to serve as the grand finale for a (personal) benefit concert on the 22nd December 1808 which included premiers of his 5th and 6th symphonies, the 4th Piano concerto and the Mass in C. Beethoven took the opportunity to use the forces available to make this comparatively short piece for piano, orchestra, and a choral finale where he, the soloist, could showoff just how good he was.Sadly, this work is seldom performed because who wants to hire a choir for just 2 minutes of music and an orchestra for not that much longer. This quintet version addresses this by allowing a much smaller ensemble to enjoy performing this utterly delightful work. The piano part is basically what Beethoven wrote, however it has been suitably modified in places to allow the piano to fit into the overall ensemble.

This is a bloody masterpiece - it's Op.120, yet it's not nearly as well known as the Grosse Fuge Op.133, which is perhaps, slightly thornier to digest at one (or 1000) hearings. This piece, in keeping with the general tone of the whole hour-long Diabelli Variations, is plainly satirical, in fact it's frequently funny. First the Fugue and then the Minuet, lampoon (by then old) conventions ruthlessly. Reason for the ridicule? Beethoven found Diabelli irritating first, and his Theme risible second. The first reason was probably enough.Enjoy!

Some pizzicato is used and the cellos and violas have a section of bowed melody. This arrangement can be played without a double bass. The piano part is not necessary for performance but can add reinforcement to the string parts and add rhythmic stability. I was blown away by her impeccable and lyrical performance.A month later I saw the Nico Quartet in a Jordan Hall recital as one of the Honors Ensembles at NEC 2019. This time I was blown away by all four members of the group.Right there and then I decided that I should write a string quartet for them. This is my 13th string quartet.
