The Duke of Alva's entry into Brussels from The Pacification of Ghent, duration : 2 min music : Peter Benoit arr. : Marc Goris Peter Benoit composed music based on the historical drama with the title 'De Pacificatie van Gent' by Emiel Van Goethem. Because of the combination of drama and music he defined the piece as a lyrical drama. He completed The Pacification of Ghent on 11 July 1876, the world premiere happening on 3 September at the Ghent Municipal Theatre. On 8 November 1576 a treaty was proclaimed from the balcony of the city hall in Ghent between the different regions of the southern and the northern Netherlands. This Pacification of Ghent occurred after the revolt against the Spanish occupation of Philip the Second and was the great ideal of William of Orange: he was striving for unity in the seventeen provinces in the Netherlands as well as for freedom of religion. Furthermore the treaty stipulated that the Spanish troops were to be removed from the Netherlands. Although this treaty was observed for only three years, the Pacification was embellished with a mythical aura in the Flanders of the 19th century. King Philip II sent the Duke of Alva to Brussels on 22 August 1567, at the head of a powerful army. On arrival, Alva replaced Margaret of Parma, the sister of the Spanish king, as head of the civil jurisdiction. He decided that the local nobility was in open rebellion against the king and supported the new Protestant teachings, heresy in his view. A few days later, on 5 September 1567, Alva established the Council of Troubles, popularly known in the Netherlands as the Court of Blood, to prosecute those responsible for the riots of 1566, especially those who were deemed heretics. Alba also targeted the local Catholic nobility, who favoured dialogue and opposed outside intervention. Two of the three heads of the Flemish nobility, the Count of Egmont, a Catholic General for Philip II, who had led the cavalry that defeated the French at the Battle of San Quentin, and Philip de Montmorency, Count of Horn, were arrested. The court sentenced both counts to death. The Major of Antwerpen, Anthony van Stralen, Lord of Merksem and Jan van Casembroot were other famous victims of the bloody repression, along with a large group of other heretics. The condemned persons were executed on 5 June 1568 in the Town Hall Square in Brussels. Alva had little confidence in Flemish justice, which he perceived as sympathetic to the defendants, and witnessed the executions in person.

English • German.Belgian composer and cellist Louis Jean Marie Baerwolf (Barwolf) was born in Bruges in 1841 (his exact date of birth is unknown) and died in Brussels on 12.1.1899. He first studied violin, cello and piano at the Conservatoire in Liège – and also played the organ in his native Bruges. From 1862 he studied at the Conservatoire Royal in Brussels. After completing his studies, he was employed for many years at the Théâtre Royal de la Monnaie in Brussels, where his brother Jean worked as a conductor; from 1889-1898 he worked as librarian at that theatre. Baerwolf composed primarily church music, including a Requiem, several masses and motets; he also wrote songs, chamber music and a Cello Concerto op. 48. Two of his compositions for cello and piano were published by Schott: a Mouvement perpétuel op. 66 and our choice, the melodic Morceau de Salon op. 54, which makes a good encore piece. It was published by Schott in 1873 as plate no. 20831.

English • German.Adrien-Francois Servais was born on 6.6.1807 in Halle, Belgium and died there on 26.11.1866. From 1829 Servais taught cello in Brussels, where from 1848 he was a professor at the Conservatoire royal de musique. Concert tours across Europe earned him a high reputation as a virtuoso performer: he was described by Berlioz as the ‘Paganini of the cello’. The piano accompaniment is by the Belgian pianist Jacques Mathieu Joseph Gregoir (Grégoir), who was born in Antwerp on 19.1.1817 and died in Brussels on 29.10.1876. He studied with Henri Herz and Christian Rummel, both of whom worked with Schott as composers. Gregoir was a successful piano virtuoso and published several piano works with Schott. Together with Servais he made a collection of thirty arrangements of famous operatic melodies in the series Collection des Duos concertants, including works by Bellini, Mozart, Wagner und Verdi. The piano accompaniment here demands very full chords and can in places be difficult to play: as with a piano reduction, it can be simplified somewhat by leaving out a few notes here and there. The Duo brillant No. 10 on themes from Wagner’s opera Tannhäuser was published in 1861 (plate no. 16412).

English • German.Another piece in Spanish style is the Capricho espagñol by Hubert Léonard. Like Charles de Bériot, Léonard was a Belgian violinist, composer and violin teacher. He began his studies at the Conservatoire in Brussels, moved to Paris to pursue further studies, played in various orchestras and toured all over Europe as a virtuoso performer. For a year he taught at the Royal Academy in Brussels, taking over from Bériot, but later returned to the French capital as a soloist, chamber musician, teacher and composer. Compositions by Léonard, who was a friend of Henri Vieuxtemps, include genres popular in his day: music for concert performance, tuition material and ‘delicacies’ to play at musical salons. Among them is Capricho espagñol, an effective little virtuoso showpiece dedicated to Léonard’s violin student Luis Sambucetti from Uruguay. Plate no. 24568, published in 1888.

Also, it has been carefully adapted to the Saxophone's possibilities. It includes a Preface written by the arranger where the piece is put in context. The adaptations made are also explained in the Preface, as well as some considerations for future performers. This revised and critical edition of Ysaÿe's Prelude offers players a reliable score, containing the necessary information to achieve a successful performance. Published by SheetMusicHub (A0.662483). This is a lead sheet style (melody/chords/form) notation of Salute d'Amour (Liebesgruß) Op. 12 by Edward Elgar. From Wikipedia: Elgar finished the piece in July 1888, when he was romantically involved with Caroline Alice Roberts, and he called it Liebesgruss ('Love's Greeting') because of Miss Roberts' fluency in German. On their engagement she had already presented him with a poem The Wind at Dawn which he set to music and, when he returned home to London on 22 September from a holiday at the house of his friend Dr. Charles Buck in Settle, he gave her Salut d'Amour as an engagement present. The dedication was in French: à Carice. Carice was a combination of his wife's names Caroline Alice, and was the name to be given to their daughter born two years later. It was published a year later by Schott & Co., a German publisher, with offices in Mainz, London, Paris and Brussels. The first published editions were for violin and piano, piano solo, cello and piano, and for small orchestra. Few copies were sold until Schott changed the title to Salut d'Amour with Liebesgruss as a sub-title, and the composer's name as 'Ed. Elgar'. The French title, Elgar realised, would help the work to be sold not only in France but in other European countries. The first public performance was of the orchestral version, at a Crystal Palace concert on 11 November 1889, conducted by August Manns. The first recording of that version was made in 1915 for The Gramophone Company with an orchestra conducted by the composer. As a violin-and-piano piece Salut d'Amour had been recorded for The Gramophone & Typewriter Ltd (predecessor to The Gramophone Company) as early as 1901 by Jacques Jacobs, leader/director of the Trocadero Restaurant orchestra. NB Vittoria Ecclesia (who commissioned Chazal) has exclusive rights to the premiere performance and recording until 30 April 2024.Written for Vittoria Ecclesia, Chazal plays with the three distinct sounds of the early clarinet. Vittoria was researching the performance possibilities of the early 19thC Müller clarinet. The lowest register, the chalumeau, has a dark, woody sound. The middle register is called the clarion because of its similarity with the trumpet. The highest register is the altissimo, which has a pure, sweet tone, perfect for the lyrical melodic themes in Chazal. Polymodal in style, the monody creates a three part texture between the three timbres, even though there is obviously no polyphonic writing. It takes its name, Chazal, from the metro stop in Brussels where the sketches were written en route to a New Year's Eve party!
