Full Orchestra - Level 5 - Digital Download SKU: A0.533667 Composed by Carson Cooman. Contemporary. Score and parts. 54 pages. Musik Fabrik Music Publishing #3037087. Published by Musik Fabrik Music Publishing (A0.533667). Pittsburgh Concerto (2005) was written for the Carnegie Mellon Philharmonic and isdedicated to Amy Stabenow, concert manager at Carnegie Mellon’s School of Music. Thepiece was conceived as a tribute to the city of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA.The work contains only two specific “programmatically inspired†images related toPittsburgh. They form the outer two sections of the work. The inner four sections areinspired more abstractly by various aspects of the city, its landscapes, and its people; theyfeature a series of solos and duets for many members of the orchestra – in the manner of a“concerto for orchestra.â€The opening of the work is inspired by Pittsburgh’s history as America’s steel capital.Colors and sounds of the clangorous industrial age of America’s past are evoked. The basicmusical material (a six-note cell) for the entire work is presented in this aggressiveintroduction. Throughout the rest of the work, this basic material is developed in ways thatrange from lushly romantic to aggressively athletic. The following section is marked “slow, lush†and features a duet first between trumpet andtuba, over warm harmonies in the orchestra. A brief duet for vibraphone and marimba leadsto an extended viola solo. The next section is fast and energetic. It begins with an athletic duet for English horn andbass trombone, followed by a ringing duet of tubular bells and crotales. The final solo is forviolin, as the orchestral texture disintegrates around it.The next section, marked “slow, mysticalâ€, begins with a duet between piano and bassclarinet. A passionate horn duo follows before a passage for solo bass leads directly into thenext section. This section is fragmentary and halting. An unpitched duo of bass drum and flexatonebegins, leading to an aggressive and abortive duet between solo flute and bassoon. Finally,an extended cello solo closes the section. The final part of the work is inspired by my first visit to Pittsburgh. When driving in fromPittsburgh airport (which is far outside the city), the city itself is “hidden†from the road byhills. Upon reaching the hills, one enters the Fort Pitt tunnel and, after a few moments, emerges from it on a suspension bridge over the Monongahela River. Late at night, this wasa truly breathtaking moment as the city and its rivers emerged suddenly in a mass of glitteringlights. The ecstatic rush of the lighted city at night is portrayed in this section – amidstfragments from the opening, recalling the industrial past, now transformed into somethingnew.Instrumentation3 Flutes (3rd dbl. Trumpet Solo - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.775966 Composed by Carson Cooman. Contemporary,Standards. Individual part. 3 pages. Musik Fabrik Music Publishing #2034727. Published by Musik Fabrik Music Publishing (A0.775966). Newton Antiphonies (2008) for two or more trumpets was composed for the First Unitarian Society in Newton, Massachusetts on the occasion of its 160th anniversary in November 2008. The score of the work consists of seven cells, each with a different tempo. It is important that the distinct tempo and character of each cell be observed. Other than starting points (as described below), no rhythmic coordination between the performers should be attempted in any way. A performance should begin with the first trumpet playing cell #1. When he reaches the point in the cell marked with an asterisk (*), the second player begins playing cell #1. Once the first player has finished cell #1, after a brief pause, he may choose any one of the other six cells to play next. When the second player has reached the point in cell #1 marked by the asterisk, the third player begins cell #1, continuing after a pause to whichever cell he has chosen next. This thus continues in this same manner for each trumpet. Ideally, the piece will last between 2 and 5 minutes, although if there are an exceptionally large number of trumpets used, it may be longer. Each player thus always begins with cell #1 and after finishing it, plays the remaining cells in any order he chooses, not repeating any and pausing briefly between each one. Once finished with playing all seven, the player stops. When only one player (the last player) is left playing his final cell (and ideally at the point marked with the asterisk in whichever cell he is playing), the first trumpet should begin playing cell #7 again. Thus, the first player will always end the piece alone with cell #7, which is the only repetition of a cell that occurs in the context of performance. The composer recommends between 4 and 6 trumpets for an ideal performance, however any number (two or more) is acceptable. It is also strongly requested that the trumpets surround the audience antiphonally. The work may be performed on any matched trumpets (i.e., do not mix C and Bb instruments).

Full Orchestra - Level 5 - Digital Download SKU: A0.533762 Composed by Carson Cooman. Contemporary,Standards. Score and parts. 55 pages. Musik Fabrik Music Publishing #3043953. Published by Musik Fabrik Music Publishing (A0.533762). Flute Concerto (2006) was commissioned by flutist Judith von Hopf and theKiev Philharmonic and premiered by them under the direction of GuidoLamell. The work is in two movements: Chanson and Fantasy Variations. The first movement, Chanson, is an extended “song†that develops through avariety of textures. The opening song material is centered around G#. In turn, this G# is revealed to be a quasi-dominant of a D centered sonority. (A briefcoda returns to G#, in preparation for the D center of the second movement.)The second movement, Fantasy Variations, is cast as two presentations ofthe theme surrounding five free variations, plus a coda. The theme serves asthe basis of the musical material for each variation as well as the structuraltemplate for each. Also, each variation contains material referring backspecifically to the previous variation. The opening theme is declamatory and massive. The first variation is fastand limber. The second variation is introspective and stratified. The thirdvariation is fleeting. The fourth variation is distant and spare. The fifthvariation is fast and driving. The final theme begins whispered and slowlyregains its declamatory nature before a brief and intense coda ends the workin a blaze. This item is the score and the solo part only. The orchestral parts are on rental from the publisher. The piano reduction is for sale as a seperate item.Instrumentation2 Flutes (2nd dbl. Brass Quintet (2007) was commissioned by the Aspen Music Festival and is dedicated to composer Alan Fletcher. The piece is cast in a one-movement, loose sonata form. The work begins with a lyrical and slow exposition, marked ?distant, unfolding.? A horn solo interrupts the lyrical lines, anticipating the development section. The development is faster in pace and jagged in contour, beginning with all five players in interlocking harmonic interplay. Out of this texture, a series of three duos (trumpet/tuba, horn/trombone, and two trumpets) emerge. The final trumpet duo presents the opening lyrical ideas re-cast as a herald fanfare. A brief, slow interlude leads to the recapitulation, marked ?excited, relentless.? A series of hocketing ostinati create the backdrop over which the original material returns. Though the music has a very different mood, the structural template is the same as in the exposition. The piece drives forward to its conclusion.? The set includes both parts for Bb or C trumpets.
