This bossa nova is inspired by Eduardo Arolasâ??s never-published tango, Volcán (Volcano). At least itâ??s never been published according to the todotango.com web site. Eduardo Arolas is a famous tango composer who is well documented on that web site. Also on that web site, you can listen to Osvaldo Requenaâ??s piano performance of Volcán from Arolasâ??s original piano sheets (written circa 1917). Years ago, I developed and wrote a tango quintet arrangement of Volcán by listening carefully to Requenaâ??s recorded piano performance on the web site. My quintet arrangement, in turn, was my source for writing this bossa nova arrangement. So, now Volcán has finally been published, but as a bossa nova! Wherever Señor Arolas may be, I hope he understands. In this bossa nova arrangement, I believe I've preserved the spirit of Arolas's original tango.Without knowing exactly what was in Eduardo Arolas's mind when he wrote the original tango, this is my personal idea of the message behind the music:Introduction: Let me tell you a story about a volcano that happened long ago.Part A (bars 5-20): It's a sad tale about human helplessness and suffering in the face of natural catastrophe.Part B (bars 21-36): The people living in a town below a volcanic peak were going about business, leisure, and play, experiencing the ordinary cares and pleasures of life.Part C (bars 41-52): One day, without warning, the volcano erupted, with smoke, falling hot rocks and ash, and hot lava flows. Some folks got away, but others were killed, buried or injured, and all that was left of the town was devastation, suffering, and, eventually, calm.Part A' (bars 53-end): A sad tale, but may we learn from it, and may the souls of the poor victims rest in peace.If you listen to and read the lyrics of Arolas's great tango, La Cachila, or listen to another superb tango of his, El Marne, you will witness further his talent and skill in composing dramatic music. Program note — Commissioned by Inversion Ensemble for its February 2023 Planet Home concert, Extinction sets the poem “An Extinction†(2022) by Kim Stafford for SATB mixed chorus. The three stanzas of the poem get distinct musical treatment: the first some text-painting and dissonance, the second rhythmic parts underpinning canonic melodic lines, the third a rich chorale. During my work on this piece, I happened to be traveling by train. The pitches of the train whistle snuck their way into the score as a dissonant chord. A nature soundscape may sometimes accompany this piece, although the tongue click sounds create a bit of their own aural ecosystem. Drawing attention to the unfolding catastrophe of mass extinction, Extinction hopes to inspire humans to action to prevent further loss of species biodiversity.

Published by Sy Brandon (A0.755024). Lest We Forget, written for the Zodiac Trio, was inspired by the approach of Memorial Day 2006 but has evolved into a composition with a more encompassing vision. The work was originally conceived to depict the horrors of war and to pay tribute to those who served and gave their lives so that freedom can endure. The conception expanded to include the horrors of natural disasters, the destruction of lives and property, and ability of humans to endure and rebound from the depths of despair. In essence, the piece is about the fragility of human life and the triumph of the spirit. The composition is in three movements. I. Fury - Strong rhythmic and contrapuntal lines depict outbursts of anger or the power of nature. The quieter sections represented a seething that builds to the violent outbursts. II. Devastation - This movement is filled with musical representations of screams, anger, laments, and hopelessness as one faces the aftermath of destruction. Long melodic lines in minor are interspersed with short motifs throughout the movement. III. Triumph of the Spirit - The movement begins quietly and slowly as if wandering among the desolation. Two thematic ideas appear during the slow section, one a prayer-like melody in the violin and the other an imitative development of the prayer idea that later representing taking initiative. These ideas transition into a faster tempo where a new theme is introduced that represents determination. The three thematic ideas alternate and development as the movement builds to a climax showing the power of the human spirit to survive catastrophe. This Piano Trio Passacaglia is the “junior†companion piece to my Cello Concerto Dunkle Saiten [Dark Strings], or more precisely to the concerto’s large-dimensional introductory section with the indication “Feierlich, schreitend†[solemnly, striding]. What in the Cello concerto then inescapably culminates in a catastrophe remains in this composition ostensibly largely conflict-free. This is in fact perhaps one of my most peaceful and conflict-free compositions; it consists of half an hour of almost exclusively tonal progressions. Here, passacaglia (stepping dance!) is taken literally: the step progressions themselves become the subject of the work. This also includes pausing, not being able to progress, feeling one’s way, stumbling and taking compulsive steps forward.As familiar as the harmonic surface of the structure appears, for me the natural adaptation of the musical flow was new to a similar degree. This is my attempt to produce a linear tonal band (a horizontal) exclusively with the aid of harmonic – i.e. vertical – progressions.- Jörg Widmann.

This work is part of a cycle of five short pieces for a single instrument and piano, focused on the five ages in the cosmogony of Ancient Mexican civilisation. The peoples of the Mexican highlands believe that time follows specific cycles and that the world was created following the pattern of 'trial and error'. The creation of the world is divided into several periods which are termed 'suns' (we are currently living in the fifth phase named 'Ollin'). Each period will be brought to an end through a natural catastrophe. Solei-Feu refers to the first attempt to create a world out of a rain of fire (nahui quiahuitl).The element of fire is reflected in the musical soundscape of this work, constructed from rampant, rhythmic motifs, fragmented splinters, spinning upswings and impacts reverberating through space. An intimate dialogue develops between violin and piano on the basis of extremely simple figures. Interconnecting lines and dense musical material are thrown against each other in a play of contrasting registers and blended tonal colouring, creating a mysterious and disturbing mythological universe coloured by its ontological pessimism. The text is the English translation by Catherine Winkworth (1827-1878) of Martin Luther's versification of Psalm 130, known in the Latin liturgy as the De profundis (Psalm 129). It is found in many English hymnals Out of the Depths. The chorale tune associated with Aus tiefer Noth is attributed to Martin Luther; it appeared in Johann Walther's chorale-book of 1524. Using this five-hundred year old tune, this anthem draws on 15th-century Flemish polyphony and mid-20th century jazz (specifically, parallel motion of block-chords, walking bass, and major-seventh chords) for its tonal character.This work calls for optional organ and SSATB choir, in which the Soprano I part may be sung by children.This psalm is most associated with Lent, penitential worship, funerals, and worship following tragedies and catastrophes. The present setting was composed by James Siddons in January 1989, and is the first in his long series of settings and interpretations of the Psalms for a wide variety of vocal and instrumental combinations and musical styles.

What kind of world are we passing on to our children?This poem gives me a ray of hope in the midst of despair, offering a moment’s rest while my own – and all mankind’s – smallness is revealed. It also allows me to sense the presence of something greater.My musical interpretation is based on these reflections. The conflict between anxiety and peace, dissonance and consonance, open textures versus clusters. Their purpose was wanting to help the victims of the recent earthquake and tsunami that devastated parts of Japan on March 11th. The meeting was organized by Mr. Alex Kurosawa, president of KPMF and held in San Jose, CA. At the end of the meeting and after much discussion about holding a series of concerts with all funds going to the disaster victims, it was suggested that I compose a new song for the project that would let those afflicted in Japan know they would not be forgotten.I was so inspired by the dedication and volunteerism of all the people at the meeting that I went home and composed a new piece of music entitled: THERE IS HOPE THROUGH MUSIC. After a favorable response from the group, I began composing another piece for violin and piano entitled: THE FINAL WAVE. In this piece, I tried to paint the horror, destruction, uncertainty and sadness of the disaster while giving hope for a future for the people who witnessed this catastrophic event. Unfortunately, THE FINAL WAVE was never completed as planned back in 2011. However, eleven years later, I completed this memorable piano and violin duet. Even though it’s been many years since that terrible day of March 11, 2011, the music can still convey emotions of melancholy, discord, resilience and compassion for tragic and unforeseeable events of today. This timeless work is dedicated to remember and give hope to all those affected by disasters and catastrophic tragedies. This advanced level of music is clearly notated for piano and violin and can be an extraordinary supplemental selection for recitals and concerts. Cascades is a three-movement composition for flute choir that represents both the waterfall definition of the word and the mountain range in the Pacific Northwest. The first movement represents Multnomah Falls, the tallest waterfall in Oregon. It drops 635 feet in two tiers. The music has cascading musical figures as well as sense of power and beauty. Mt. Hood is the inspiration for second movement. Standing at 11,249 feet above sea level, this majestic mountain is dramatically visible from the valley floor and is snow covered most of the year. The music of this movement depicts the rising from the valley floor with its low to high orchestration. The almost symmetrical shape is represented by descending lines after the two climaxes.The third movement is a reminder of the relatively youngness of the Cascade mountain range. In 1980, Mt. St. Helens erupted, causing catastrophic damage to the surrounding area and loss of lives. What remains of this former symmetrical mountain is a large crater as a reminder of the volatile nature of the Cascade Range. The music of this movement is filled with tension, from the seismic tremors of the first part to the eruption itself in the second part. A final cascade, this time depicting lava flow rather than a waterfall, brings both the movement and the composition to a close.
