In July 2019, Lithuanian organist Paulius Grigonis discovered a previously unpublished composition by Juozas Naujalis, entitled Communio “Jesus, Jesus, Come to Meâ€, which was preserved at the Lithuanian Theater, Music and Film Museum. The very end of the manuscript bears the inscription of the place and time of its creation: Å venÄionÄ—liai, October 30, 1914. The newly discovered piece was premiered on August 22, 2019, at the Vilnius Cathedral.Juozas Naujalis (1869–1934) – Lithuanian composer and organist. In 1892, he was appointed organist and choir leader at the Kaunas Cathedral, a position he held until his death. Naujalis became actively involved in organizing local musical societies and institutions. As an outcome of his groundbreaking work, a number of important private entities, such as the first boys’ choir in Lithuania based at the Archcathedral Basilica in Kaunas, courses and the school for organists (1911), the first legal Lithuanian bookshop and music publishing house in Kaunas (1905–1912), the first music magazine Vargonininkas (The Organist) and calendars for organists published in Lithuanian (1909–1910), and the music school in Kaunas (1919), have been launched. In 1908, he founded the Children Society and St. Gregory Society for Organists, which was later reorganised into St. Cecilia Society for church musicians (1924). Naujalis was also the first Lithuanian composer to achieve recognition abroad. His church music was published in Regensburg, Warsaw, St. Petersburg, Leipzig and Paris. In recognition of his merits in the field of church music he was made Commander of the Order of the Crown of Italy in Rome, in 1929. A total of 29 organ pieces by Naujalis were recorded at the Archcathedral Basilica in Kaunas in 2019.

So one year I decided to write this one. Perhaps the ideal way to present this song is with a soloist who is joined by a choir of adults (or children!) singing in unison on the second and third choruses--emulating a choir of angels. When used this way, this song provides an easy way to stretch your rehearsal time at the Christmas season, as the choir can easily participate, yet there is no learning of extra parts. Brimming with worship of the Christ Child from the very first lyric, Heaven's Here to Stay begins by quietly evoking the atmosphere of the stable. When the chorus arrives, the jubilant singing of the angels arrives as well: Glory in the highest, for the Peace of heaven comes to earth! Glory in the highest--Hope itself was born in Jesus's birth. For Death is dying, Fear is cowering, Light is chasing Night away. The burning love of heaven's here to stay. The second verse takes us from the manger scene to the hills of Judea, where we hear Jesus's words: Come, you weary ones to me, I will give you rest. Sweetwater Brass Press #707372. Published by Sweetwater Brass Press (A0.1104138).      Howard W. Petrie was a composer of popular music active in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. One of his most popular songs was “I Don’t Want to Play in Your Yard,†published early in his career, 1894. The song underwent a revival in the mid-1950s when Peggy Lee recorded it. It also figured prominently in the popular 1981 film Reds. Lyrics are credited to Philip Wingate, and his first verse sets up the story. Two little girls were next-door neighbors and best of friends. One day, however, a quarrel arose and “hot tears were shared.†One announced, “You can’t play in our yard.†The reply of the other forms the familiar chorus: I don't want to play in your yard, I don't like you any more, You'll be sorry when you see me sliding down our cellar door, You can't holler down our rain-barrel, you can't climb our apple tree, I don't want to play in your yard, if you won't be good to me.      The second verse tells of the reconciliation. The two girls miss each other. They kiss and make up and remain friends “all thro’ life.†But “in sweet dreams of childhood†we still remember the controversy of the yard.      This version features the group's Trumpets somewhat taking the roles of the two little girls. It retains the F major key in which it was written, changes tempo four times (in addition to a few rallentando/a tempo instructions) and includes two short, rather simple cadenzas, one for each Trumpet. It starts (rather incongruously!) with the eight 4/4 measures of “Mary, Mary, Quite Contrary†then transitions to ¾ for the remainder of the piece.      Trumpets predominate with melody and lead. However Horn and Trombone do occasionally come to the fore to provide introductions, call-and-response figures and recapitulations. Both Trumpets play a few notes above their staff—G# and A—but for the most part, all instruments perform within their normal playing range. Performance time is about three and a half minutes to perform.      Completed in 2022, performance time runs about 3 minutes, 34 seconds. Published by Connie Boss (A0.1335072). I put a twist on Jolly Old Saint Nicholas. I added verses and a different melody along with the familiar melody of Jolly Old Saint Nicholas. This song starts off with a child waiting patiently in line to see Santa so he can tell him what he wishes for him to bring him for Christmas. I started off with my own original melody and lyrics and then in the middle of the song, when the child finally reaches Santa, I switch to the melody of Jolly Old Saint Nicholas. However, to modernize it, I switched to Jolly Old Dear Santa Claus. I kept verse one lyrics the same except for that part. I changed the lyrics entirely for the second verse. The child tells Santa where he can put the presents and hopes one is for him. He also tells him he tries to wait up for him each year, but Santa is so quiet, he sleeps through the night. The last verse is back to my original melody and lyrics where Santa tells him it will be a surprise what he brings him this year. This brings the song all the way from waiting in line to see Santa to sitting on his knee and Santa telling him it will be a surprise.
