Prelude and Fugue in C major for String Orchestra - Arrangement of Beethoven Hess 31

String Orchestra - Digital Download SKU: A0.933524 Composed by Ludwig van Beethoven, Cees Nieuwenhuizen. Arranged by Upstream Music. Classical. Score and parts. 24 pages. Upstream Music #6353319. Published by Upstream Music (A0.933524). The Prelude and Fugue in C major were created during the period of study with Johann Georg Albrechtsberger, who lived from February 3, 1736 to March 7, 1809. Albrechtsberger was an Austrian theoretician and pedagogue of music, an organist, as well as a composer. He entered upon his career early as a choirboy in the choir of the monastery of Melk, Austria. There he was discovered by the crown prince, the later emperor Joseph II. The latter facilitated an appointment as the court organist.Later Albrechtsberger became conductor of the chapel choir of the famous Stephansdom in Vienna. Albrechtsberger was a highly praised pedagogue; Beethoven, too, was among his pupils. It was this composer that studied with Albrechtsberger from January 1794 to March/May 1795. Together with Beethoven, Albrechtsberger researched all forms of the counterpoint, which is most manifest in the large number of exercises passed down; over 300 studies, fugues etc. have been preserved with corrections and alterations by Albrechtsberger. During this period of study, greater works were also composed, such as the Dona Nobis Pacem (Hess A57), the Prelude and Fugue in E minor (Hess 29), the Prelude and Fugue in F major (Hess 30) and the present one in C major (Hess 31). The piece was probably composed in 1794-95; this opus also shows numerous improvements and alterations by his master, although some alterations are by Beethoven himself. The manuscript of the work is to be found in Vienna, and did not appear in print until 1967 for the first time. The present version sticks closely to Beethoven’s, but has been provided with a double bass part so as to adapt the work for being performed with a larger strength than for which it was originally written. The strength originally intended by Beethoven was two violins, a viola and a cello, so as a string quartet. With the supplementary bass part, the piece can also be played by a string orchestra, which will no doubt promote its dissemination and familiarity. In a sense, the work is already a preliminary study for the string quartets Opus 18 produced later.Especially the rhythm, melodic forms, and the counterpoint applied, frequently return in these string quartets. Beethoven has hardly indicated any rests in the empty bars; Cees has as yet added them. The phrasing, dynamics and time indications have also been added. Beethoven merely writes down the notes, while we have to accept the fact that various notes have been changed by Albrechtsberger but Beethoven’s notes might have been just as interesting. Of some notes it was not clear what Beethoven exactly meant; in such a case, Cees has adhered to the harmonious form, adapting the notes which, logically speaking, fit in with the harmonic unity.

Baroque,Chamber,Contest,Festival,Instructional,Standards. 12 pages. Jmsgu3 #725148. Published by jmsgu3 (A0.1124402). Score: 5 pages. Duration: 3:20Johann Sebastian Bach's Prelude & Fugue in C Major BWV 553 is a work of great beauty and technical mastery. It is one of the most famous pieces in the organ repertoire, and is often referred to as the “Great†Prelude & Fugue. The prelude is in a highly ornate, contrapuntal style, and features a wide range of musical textures. It is characterized by rapid figuration, with themes and motifs that move between the voices in an almost playful manner. The fugue is equally impressive, with a powerful and driving counterpoint that culminates in a glorious, triumphant conclusion. The piece has been recorded by many of the world's leading organists, and has been performed in countless churches, concert halls, and other venues. It is a work that continues to captivate and inspire listeners, and will surely remain a beloved classic for generations to come.

This arrangement re-scores the first movement of Sinfonia No. 9 from six voices, requiring two separate viola parts, to the traditional five-voice string orchestra. Consistent with selected professional performances of the work, the first of two recapitulations has been seamlessly omitted to create a more balanced form, eliminate redundancies akin to counterpoint exercises, and showcase the young composer's emerging creativity by emphasizing his striking use of the key of A-major before reaffirming the home key. Invention No. 1 in A minor for two voices

Piano Solo - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1140562 Composed by Robert W. Padgett. Baroque,Classical,Contest,Early Music,Festival. Score. 2 pages. Padgett Music Llc #740799. Published by Padgett Music Llc (A0.1140562). This two-part invention was composed by Robert W. Padgett in 1990 as a private exercise in invertible counterpoint. The upper voice announces the motive in the tonic key of A minor that quickly overlaps itself at the octave as a brief stretto. An episode consisting of a modulation sequence arrives at a half cadence in bar 4 in E major. The motive is then inverted in bar 5 by the upper voice followed by a partial restatement of the original motive by the lower voice in bar 6. This interplay between the motive’s inversion and its original form continues through bar 10 before a new episode modulates sequentially to a cadence in bar 13 with a statement by the lower voice of the original motive in the relative key of C major. An inversion of the original episodic sequence from bar 2 follows with slight alterations that cycle through a series of contrasting keys. A second interplay begins in bar 17 between the motive’s inversion in the lower voice followed by its partial restatement in the upper voice. The exchange of motive and countermotive by the upper and lower voices is an example of invertible counterpoint. In bar 27, an extended version of the motive begins in F minor before morphing back into A minor with the same modulation formula from bar 2 that redirects to a perfect cadence in the tonic key with a final Picardi third in A major.

Allegro moderato Scored for Flute, Oboe, and Bassoon, this Baroque-style Wind Trio was written in three movements for Flute, Oboe, and Bassoon. The first movement, Allegro moderato, is a study in counterpoint and cannon, while the Chaconne of the second movement provides the opportunity for lyrical playing between the ensemble. The work finishes with the lively counterpoint of the Allegro moderato movement. This Baroque-style Wind Trio is around 10 minutes long, and although it is scored for winds, could be played by other C instruments.INCLUDES SCORE AND PARTS

Piano Solo - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1141383 Composed by Robert W. Padgett. Baroque,Classical,Contest,Festival,Instructional,Traditional. Score. 3 pages. Padgett Music Llc #741707. Published by Padgett Music Llc (A0.1141383). This three-part Invention No. 2 in D minor was composed in the summer of 1991. I shared it with my modal and tonal counterpoint instructor, Professor Richard Wilson, and he responded favorably to my venturesome modulations and use of the Neapolitan chord. Similar to my first invention in A minor, the motive is announced by the upper voice before it is restated an octave lower by the lower voice in bar 2 to form a stretto. In bar 3, the middle voice states the motive in the dominant key of A minor with the lower and upper voices playing the first and second countermotives respectively. An episode ensues and arrives at a half cadence in bar 8. The opening fragment of the motive is exploited in conjunction with a pedal tone and a variant of the second countermotive to navigate through a series of contrasting keys. At bar 14, the motive is reasserted in F-sharp minor layered over itself in stretto with a C-sharp pedal tone in bar 15. The voices from the episode in bars 5-8 are reshuffled in bars 18-21 as another exercise in invertible counterpoint. In measure 16, the motive and two countermotives are reprised in C-sharp minor, a half step below the tonic key. Starting in bar 18, the episode from bars 6-8 is reprised in F-sharp minor with the first and second countermotives exchanging positions. This is followed in bars 16-27 by a varied restatement of the episodic sequence from bars 8-17 that cadences in bar 27 before a restatement of the subject in bar 28 in G minor with slightly embellished countermotives. Bars 32-35 present a restatement of the episode from bars 5-8 with the motive relocated to the lower voice and the two countermotives in intimate proximity in the two upper voices. An unexpected descending scale in a series of compound harmonic 10ths forms an inversion of the second half of the motive and sets the stage for a perfect cadence to a Picardy Third in D major. After so many years, I remain especially pleased with the effect of that ending.

C# min and Ab Maj are two keys which lend themselves to topographical symmetry, since they both have four black keys in use. Advanced level at tempo, slower makes it a bit more palatable for an intermediate player. Originally composed for organ, this ricercar by Johann Pachelbel (1653-1706) is here arranged for Brass Quartet, Brass Quintet, or Brass Choir/Ensemble with optional keyboard. Your audience and parishioners will be moved by the deeply reverent nature of this work. It is an excellent work for any concert or for more advanced ensembles in educational settings. As a prelude to a worship service it will prepare the hearts of your parishioners to hear the Word of God. Beginning with an ascending chromatic theme, Pachelbel crafts a six-minute work in three parts. In the second part he inverts the theme. In the third part he introduces a third theme and then combines it with the first two. Although this work is not as well-known as the Canon in D Major, it is equally as skillful and shows that Pachelbel was not only a master of the Baroque, but also of Renaissance counterpoint. Jazz Ensemble Jazz Ensemble - Level 4 - Digital Download SKU: A0.948697 Composed by Mark S. Massey. Blues,Jazz. Score and parts. 3 pages. Geofonica Artistworks #6038029. Published by Geofonica Artistworks (A0.948697). Professor M & M's Jive Detector is a super cool, very bluesy instrumental jazz hit (in lead sheet format here) from pianist Mark Massey's breakthrough jazz LP: API: Acoustic Piano International. (NOTE: A Bb leadsheet is also available.) The piano and tenor sax interact, with sax and piano doubling the main melody (performed by guest saxophonist Plas Johnson--famed Wrecking Crew sax/woodwind player who was featured on The Pink Panther Theme), plus sax and piano in blues interplay and counterpoint. It's a great vehicle for musical interplay, blues/jazz improvisation, and laid-back bluesy rhythm section grooves. The API track features Plas Johnson on sax backed by the Mark Massey trio, with Eric Stiller on acoustic bass and Aldo Bentivegna on drums.ABOUT MARK:In 2018, the California State Assembly and the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors issued proclamations recognizing Mark Massey as a Jazz Living Legend. Jazz pianist-composer Mark Massey was born and raised in Lynwood, California, where he showed early talent on piano, trombone, and drums. During high school, he studied classical piano and played in the bands Synopsis (with future trumpet giant Wayne Bergeron), and Sabor (with Poncho Sanchez and the Banda Brothers). Mark played in the Pico Rivera Stage Band, which won First Place at the Hollywood Bowl Battle of the Bands. Mark graduated from California State University, Long Beach (with Bachelors and Masters degrees in Music), where he was recipient of the Carmen Dragon Fellowship for composition and he was dubbed A Young Giant by the National Association Of Jazz Educators. Mark has performed throughout the U.S., Europe, the former Soviet Union (in the 1980s), Russia (2001), the Far East and India. He has worked with Larry Carlton, David Benoit, Paul Horn, Hubert Laws, Louie Bellson, the Side Street Strutters, Phil Upchurch, L. Subramaniam, Freddie Hubbard, Maynard Ferguson, Yehudi Menuhin, Stéphane Grappelli, and Tony Williams. Mark was featured in The Four Pianos In Concert series along with pianists Paul Smith, Pete Jolly and Steve Allen. Mark Massey's debut CD, Acoustic Piano International, has received wide airplay on jazz radio. API featured nine of Mark's original jazz compositions--including Professor M&M's Jive Detector, offered here--inspired by his musical excursions around the globe, along with Eric Stiller (bass) and Aldo Bentivegna (drums), and guest artists Alex Acuña, percussion (Weather Report), Justo Almario, flute (Mongo Santamaria), Plas Johnson, tenor sax (The Pink Panther Theme), Bob Mintzer, soprano sax (The Yellow Jackets), and Ron Stout, flugelhorn, More recently, Mark has been recording his iconic Jazz Thoughts for the Day albums of original jazz improvisional compositions for each day of the year. Jazz Thoughts for the months of January through July have thus far been released. COMMENTS FROM MAJOR CRITIC REVIEWS OF MARK MASSEY: Mark Massey is awfully good. His friendly, lyrical, melodic piano has a sound unto itself, bop and post-bop influenced, contemporarily informed, and languishing solidly in the modern mainstream. ...This is a very good trio that is together in many aspects of jazz expressionism. In larger, more interactive settings, Massey proves he has ideas that work well. ...Massey's talent being exposed is a breakthrough. A majority of jazz listeners should find this a worthwhile purchase, and a keeper. Recommended.----MICHAEL G. NASTOS, ALL MUSIC GUIDE (CD review of Acoustic Piano International) Mark Massey is an excellent straight-ahead pianist who often appears in the L.A. area. ...his playing is consistently appealing. Of the trio numbers, the often-introspective Flowers For Dorothy, the heated Limejuicer Blues, and .

Fugues Op. 17 for Piano by David TsvarianiIntroduction:Allow me to share a few thoughts about my recent composition, Fugues Op. 17, for piano. Comprising four individual fugues that can be performed separately or as a complete suite, this work explores a range of tempos, keys, and thematic nuances. I've endeavored to create a modest collection that, when performed together, offers a glimpse into various emotional landscapes.Fugue No. 1 in C Major (Allegro vivace):The journey begins with the lively Allegro vivace in C major, a modest 01:44 celebration of joy and energy. It is my hope that this piece, with its brisk tempo, serves as a lively opening to the collection, showcasing the pianist's skill and the intricate counterpoint I aimed to achieve.Fugue No. 2 in B-flat Major (Andante):The second fugue, marked Andante with a duration of 02:25, introduces a contemplative mood in the key of B-flat major. In my modest attempt, this piece invites the listener to reflect and explore a more introspective side, providing a gentle contrast to the preceding fugue.Fugue No. 3 in A Major (Adagio):With a deliberate pace of 02:57 and an Adagio tempo, the third fugue in A major emphasizes melody and expression. My humble intention was to create a serene and emotional landscape, allowing the listener to experience a deeper connection with the music.Fugue No. 4 in D Major (Allegretto):The final fugue, an Allegretto in D major, lasts a mere 01:40. In a departure from convention, I introduced an Eastern or oriental scale, aiming to infuse the composition with a unique character. It is my modest hope that this unexpected touch adds a distinctive flavor to the overall work.Program Notes:As I share Fugues Op. 17, I am mindful of the privilege of having my compositions interpreted by talented performers. My sincere aspiration was to create a humble collection that weaves together varied emotions and styles. The inclusion of a melodic third fugue and the exoticism of the fourth fugue seeks to expand the tonal palette modestly. I hope that, as a whole, this collection speaks with a quiet resonance, leaving room for interpretation and connection between the music, the performer, and the listener. With gratitude, David Tsvariani.

Solo Guitar - Level 5 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1124418 Composed by Igor Korneitchouk. 20th Century,Contemporary. Individual part. 5 pages. Studio at the Post #723409. Published by Studio at the Post (A0.1124418). Duration: 8 - 9 minutes, 3 pp. Description: The structure of Grid (Cynosure) is made up of several overlapping processes, of which the descending voice leading is but the easiest to discern. Shifting harmonies become an artifact of the individual descending voices, while the ebb and flow of these harmonies leads to the perception of windows of consonance — or harmonic nodes in C major, A major and E major. Simultaneously, the listener's temporal reference shifts gears in a process of continually augmenting pulses, changing the listener's perception of time and tempo. There is, then, a counterpoint between three different elemental processes: a melodic process, a harmonic process and a temporal process, which all co-operate to create the work's movement from tension to repose. Cynosure : noun, a person or thing that is the center of attention or admiration (the Queen was the cynosure of all eyes); from Latin cynosura, from Greek kunosoura ‘dog's tail’ (also ‘Ursa Minor’ ), from ku!n, kun- ‘dog’ + oura ‘tail.’ The term originally denoted the constellation Ursa Minor, or the star Polaris that it contains, long used as a guide by navigators.

Bach-Gounod: Ave Maria for Baritone Horn & Piano

Baritone Horn TC/Euphonium,Instrumental Solo,Piano - Level 2 - Digital Download SKU: A0.552852 Composed by Bach-Gounod. Arranged by James M. Guthrie, ASCAP. Christmas,Contemporary,Easter,Wedding. Score and individual part. 11 pages. Jmsgu3 #3491315. Published by jmsgu3 (A0.552852). Schwencke There are two popular versions of the Bach-Gounod Ave Maria to consider. Firstly, we have the version that exactly follows the harmonic scheme set forth by J. S. Bach in his Prelude #1 in C Major from the Well-Tempered Clavier, Book 1. Secondly, we have the arrangement introduced by the Choirmaster Christian Friedrich Gottlieb Schwencke in 1783 that introduces a controversial added measure designed to intensify the harmony in measure 27. Both versions employ the melody that Charles Gounod provided as an overlay to the Bach harmony. In either case, the convenient 1st & 2nd endings provide options for extended performance. The duration with the repeat runs about 4:50. This arrangement follows the original Bach prelude and so excludes the extra measure that Schwencke introduced in 1783. If you prefer the extra measure, please see Bach-Gounod: Ave Maria, Schwencke version for Baritone Horn & Piano, S0.661783. Ave Maria Ave Maria is a Catholic prayer that consequently asks for the mother of Jesus (Mary) to intercede. Charles Gounod composed a famous version of the Ave Maria. He was a French Romantic composer who overlaid a new melody on an existing Bach chord progression. The progression is from Bach’s Prelude No. 1 from Well-Tempered Clavier I. This version, as well as Schubert’s version, have become essential items at weddings, masses, and funerals. Bach Overview First of all, Johann Sebastian Bach is maybe the greatest composer in music history. Certainly, he was prolific. As a result, everyone has heard of his works. Furthermore, these works number well over a thousand. It seems like people are probably most familiar with instrumental works such as the Brandenburg Concertos, and the Goldberg Variations. But, similarly famous are such noteworthy works as the Well-Tempered Clavier, the Musical Offering, and the Art of Fugue. Seems like his most famous vocal works include the most noteworthy Mass in B Minor. Also, most noteworthy, though, are the St. John Passion, and certainly the Christmas Oratorio.  History Bach came from a long line of musicians and above all, composers. Consequently, he, first of all, pursued a career as a church organist. So as a result, he gained employment in various Protestant churches in Germany. For a while, he worked as a court musician in Weimar and Köthen. Here he probably developed his organ style and likewise his chamber music style. Eventually, he gained an appointment as Cantor of St. Thomas in Leipzig. Here he worked until difficulties with his employer ultimately drove him away. The King of Poland finally appointed him as court composer.  Style It seems like Bach created an engaging new international style. He synthesized elements of the most noteworthy European music ideas into his new style. Even more, this new style was probably his synthesis of European musical rhythm and form. Furthermore, he demonstrated a complete mastery of counterpoint and motivic development. His sense of harmonic organization probably propelled him to the top. Revival        Mendelssohn conducted a Bach revival in the nineteenth century. His effort probably helped to re-familiarize the public with the magnitude of Bach’s works. During this period, scholars published many noteworthy Bach biographies. Moreover, Wolfgang Schmieder published the BWV (Bach Werke Verzeichnis). As a result, this is now the official catalog of his entire artistic output. The BWV number allows us to locate a work in the catalog. Sometimes scholars will simply use an S (Schmieder) as an abbreviation for BWV. Â
