Sometimes the song of a single voice, over time, evolves into a needed chorus of many. Such is Joni Mitchell’s anthem to activism “The Fiddle and the Drum†(1969).  Originally an anti-Vietnam-war protest song, the song has since been recorded 42 times, and counting, because it inspires us to “remember all the good things ‘we’ are… and because we have all come to fear the beating of ‘your’ drum.† This arrangement is scored for 8-part [SSAATTBB occasional divisi] chorus, with a very minimal piano part added for percussion-purposes only; essentially the piece is sung a cappella. The ‘piano’ part is actually an interpretation of a timpani and bass drum [2 players] accompaniment which is included with the score.  Performance time 3:48+- Note: this arrangement was conceived with large choral ensemble with mature voices in mind.  The registers are extreme for the bass and alto sections, but doable when building the overall sound of the ensemble and adjusting dynamic levels of the other voices.

It’s very slow, and lasts just over three and a half minutes - be sure not to rush this lovely piece and its haunting descant in the final Verse.The key is just a semitone lower than the original, and two guitars are tuned to 6=D to give a rich deep bass that maximises the sustain that guitars can achieve.Guitar 1 plays the part of the high descant in the original.Guitar 2 is the tune, and if you have more than 4 players, there is an optional divisi part (Guitar 2a) that helps reinforce the beautiful melody.Guitar 3 is arpeggio based, to help the sustain and to ease the counting of the beats.Guitar 4 has thick chords which should be rolled (but not strummed) to add to the majesty of the music.I hope you enjoy playing this piece!This is one of a large and growing range of accessible ensembles from experienced arranger Derek Hasted, and is supplied as full score and parts. It's fast and plays best if counted in two because we have (2) transitions to 6/8 (march) and back again to 4/4 (swing). By counting in TWO the transition is easier because the downbeats remain the same.There are ad lib solos for the Tenor I Sax, Trombone II, Alto II, Trumpet II and Guitar. At the end we have a rallentando leading to (2) fermatas, the 1st long and the 2nd longer. This is a chance to feature the drummer with solo fills. Separate the fermatas with RR tracks, please. Following the latter fermata and RR tracks, the last 4 bars are back up to tempo!

To counter that, stress beats 1 and 2 in the left hand, or 1 and 4. Measure 24 has fermatas on each note, so stretch those chords out. Then in bar 25, the a tempo means to go back to the original tempo. Starting in measure 21, bring out the melody and stress the top note of the chords.

It is for piano students ready to move from beginners’ stage and looking for something a little more challenging. There are two versions of Variations in Blue, an Abridged version (single page) and a Full version (double page). The Abridged version could also be used by more advanced pianists for sight-reading practice. This piece has a simple bluesy theme followed by two variations; it concludes with the original theme. The Abridged version uses only the simple bluesy 16-bar theme. While Variation 2 (Full version only) changes metre from four to three, the speed of the beat is the same. To establish this, it may help to have students alternate counting in steady fours and then threes without changing tempo. The accompanying mp3 file is a demo version only.

The note-reading could be challenging for someone new to chromatic scales. However, there are no sharps or flats in the key signature which instantly eliminates one possible challenge. Technically it is not as difficult as it may seem at first as most of the triplet chromatic scale patterns are less than a measure long, providing frequent chances for the RH to rest or at least breathe. However, like with any passage work, it is important to not press / push into the keys. While the harmony of the first two lines is very traditional, using chord progressions that an (early) intermediate pianist would be familiar with, from the 3rd line on there are frequent modulations and surprise key changes which may pose a challenge for a pianist who has not as much experience with that. Musical / interpretation challenges could be to keep it light, to shape the many short melodic patterns, and to play with a smile.

The A sections are nearly identical, only the measure before the last is slightly different.The counting is easy as the LH keeps the beat most of the time. Note-reading could be challenging for a pianist who has not much experience with chromaticism and ledger lines. The A section is in G minor and features mostly triplets in the RH with oom-pa-pa accompaniment in the LH. Even though it feels and sounds busy and energetic, it still needs to gently sway, with some judicious give and take in the tempo.The middle section is in G major and moves the melody into the LH. The LH melody is mostly quarter notes, and the RH accompaniment is either quarter or eighth notes which makes for a much calmer feeling.This waltz would best suit a pianist who has experience with either RH passage work or LH waltz accompaniment with wide leaps, or both. Published by Lyons Music Services (A0.767345). This is my second Horn Sonata for unaccompanied horn. Like the first, it has 3 movements, each of which can be played on their own. 1st. Movement: Andante piacere The music of the first section is based on the opening idea. The descending glissandos and the repeated note figures should be taken in a leisurely way, a piacere, rather than in totally strict time. In bar 10, the flz should appear out of the tied note, without a fresh tongue. From letter A, the music is based on the repeated note patterns which are gradually developed and metamorphosed into new shapes in a gradual process. At letter B, a second motif is added which is more expressive and dynamically diverse. The development of this idea reaches a climax at the rall before letter C, from where this idea becomes more frenetic and agitated until it 'tires itself out' in the pauses before letter D. Here the original repeated note motif reappears to provide a basic ternary shape as the original ideas, changed by the development process are re-stated in their new forms. The closing pauses should be played as marked, with comma breaks, but not between the two notes in the penultimate bar. 2nd Movement: Adagio This movement is slow and wistful, atmospheric and drifting. Each phrase should be given its own space. Each individual motif has its own rises and falls and these should be tastefully exaggerated to give them as much definition as possible. 3rd. Movement: Allegro vivace This movement is intended to be flashy and full of life. The 7/8 time signature gives it plenty of off-beat vivacity. Players will need to make sure they know what the pulse is as it shifts from 2+2+3 to 2+3+2 and 3+2+2. Much of the material (motifs) are related to the music of the first two movements so this rousing finale will brig a sense of completeness to the performance of the sonata, though it can, of course, be played as a separate piece in its own right. This movement is both enjoyable and challenging, requiring a good technique and counting skills. The subtle shifts to 6/8 and 5/8 - and even 3/4 time need to be treated with care.
