The current version if relatively modern, and the one that most hymnals use. I've used the 6/4 dancing form more than the chant. Both are beautiful, but this is more in the spirit of Come Hear the Bells. The bassoon has a cantus firmus at mm 29, and is otherwise featured.This is the fourth of five Christmas carols for woodwind quintet, in various styles. They share the themes of coming together and heeding the call of bells to celebrate the holidays.They would work separately running between 2 and 3 minutes or all together for about 13 minutes. So they would give your winds a chance to shine in contrast to your full ensemble. This passacaglia is a slow theme and variations, in a minor mode, with a bass ostinato. I have 3 versions; this one is a mambo version for Tenor Sax, Trumpet, Trombone, Piano, String Bass and 4-part latin percussion.The only difficult part is dealing with the counterpoint, but it is worth the effort, it will impress your audience, and is fun to play. I will be uploading a PDF with the individual parts. I have ALSO uploaded a version for piano, viola and double bass.and a string orchestra version. You could make a whole concert out this one piece!

See also the Brass Canon-Parts. This is a musical canon, for brass. What else would I call it? It's for 4 horns, 3 trumpets, 3 trombones, euphonium, tuba and tympani (F2 to Ab3). It's just over two minutes long, but very contrapuntal and a challenge. But playable, with rehearsal. Take it a section at a time, and insiste the others listen. Every theme they play is echoed by others, so once they hear the tuba solo in the beginning, everyone should just copy it, in their own octave and key. LOTS of modulations. Again, they'll groan but they'll learn things. And they'll.

THIS passacaglia is a slow theme and variations, in a minor mode, with a bass ostinato. The only difficult part is dealing with the counterpoint, but it is worth the effort, it will impress your audience, and is fun to play. I HAVE 3 versions; this one is for string orchestra version I HAVE uploaded a PDF with the individual string parts. I ALSO,have a version for piano, viola and double bass/cello, with parts, AND a mambo version for Tenor Sax, Trumpet, Trombone, Piano, String Bass and 4-part latin percussion., with parts. It was written for synthesizer, but ten one day I thought ... How about 4 double basses? And later I thought, How about 2 double basses and two fretless basses? And it was good. The drum machine part was left over from the synth days, but I like it. I will upload the drums only mp3, so you can play along. The advanced rating is mostly because the first part goes up to the A above the octave G. The ranges for the other parts are reasonable. The tempo can be 100-120, although 90 might swing more..Enjoy. And directors: if you have 4 basses, here's a chance for them to show off. They'll love it! Or even perhaps 2 cellos and 2 basses! Have fun!
