El Aventurero - Ensamble para Coro de ClarinetesEn abril de 2022, se lanzó esta nueva versión oficial definitiva de la composición Nº 07 “El Aventureroâ€, un ensamble para coro de clarinetes. Esta actualización fue posible gracias a la valiosa retroalimentación proporcionada por maestros, compañeros, alumnos y público en general, quienes solicitaron la incorporación de nuevos temas y una mayor duración de la obra para satisfacer la demanda de una experiencia auditiva más completa. Los aspectos más destacados y significativos de esta nueva versión radica en la incorporación de nuevos temas inéditos, tales como dos estribillos, un trÃo y un montuno extendido en forma de improvisación. Este último elemento fue fundamental para desarrollar, expandir y aventurarme nuevamente en la obra. A través de él, pude plasmar los ciclos de mi vida y transportar el pasado hacia el presente. Asimismo, se incorporó un desenlace explÃcito y coherente para garantizar que el oyente comprenda de manera inequÃvoca la conclusión de la obra. Esto contrasta con la versión anterior, que dejaba cierta ambigüedad sobre si la pieza continuaba o habÃa llegado a su fin. Además de los nuevos temas, se realizaron mejoras en los ya existentes ampliando algunas frases y motivos y se añadieron puentes para facilitar la unión y repetición, y también se introdujeron cambios en los contrapuntos y armonÃas en frases especÃficas. En su obra “El Aventureroâ€, el compositor mexicano comparte su historia personal a través de las distintas etapas que ha experimentado a lo largo de su vida. Originario de la comunidad de Tlahuitoltepec Mixe, Oaxaca, el autor creció hablando la lengua mixe y se sumergió en las tradiciones, usos y costumbres de una comunidad rica en cultura. Desde temprana edad, estuvo expuesto a bandas filarmónicas con repertorios de sones y jarabes. A la edad de diez años, tuvo su primer acercamiento a la música a través de lecciones impartidas por su padre. Posteriormente, continuó su aprendizaje de manera autodidacta y se unió a la banda municipal del pueblo. Con el paso del tiempo, la banda municipal, ahora conocida como BASTLAM, alcanzó su máximo potencial en la década de los 90. Fue entonces cuando comenzaron las giras musicales y el autor tuvo la oportunidad de visitar las ciudades de Oaxaca, México y Veracruz. Quedó impresionado por la belleza de las grandes ciudades y sus distintas tradiciones, pero sobre todo por su rica cultura musical. Posteriormente, se trasladó a la Ciudad de México para residir allà temporalmente. Sus viajes musicales continuaron por casi todos los estados de la República Mexicana. Durante estos viajes, adquirió experiencias y conocimientos valiosos, maravillándose ante la magnificencia de las diferentes culturas, tradiciones y estilos musicales de cada estado. En conclusión: “El Aventurero†es una obra fascinante en la que el compositor mexicano relata su historia personal a través de las distintas etapas de su vida. Desde sus orÃgenes en la comunidad de Tlahuitoltepec Mixe, Oaxaca, hasta sus viajes musicales por la República Mexicana, el autor ha tenido la oportunidad de experimentar y aprender de las ricas culturas y tradiciones de su paÃs. Su pasión por la música lo ha llevado a lugares y experiencias inolvidables, y esta obra es un testimonio conmovedor de su viaje. La nueva versión de “El Aventurero†representa una evolución enriquecedora de la obra original. Gracias a la incorporación de nuevos temas y desarrollos que invita al oyente a sumergirse en un emocionante viaje musical. Las sugerencias y comentarios recibidos permitieron mejorar y expandir esta composición para ofrecer una experiencia única.

Louis Adolphe Mayeur (1837 - 1894), was a Belgium clarinetist, saxophonist, composer and conductor who spent most of his musical career in France; Entering the French Military in 1855, he was a clarinetist in the Second Régiment of the Cuirassiers (Mounted Calvary) of the Garde Impériale. A student of Klosé at the Paris Conservatory, he received his First Prize in Clarinet in 1860. One of the inner circle of Adolphe Sax (along with fellow Belgiums Jules Demersseman and Jean-Baptiste Singelée, whose “Quartet for Saxophones“ was premièred with Mayeur playing and Demersseman conducting), Mayeur took up the saxophone and was quickly engaged as the saxophone soloist in the Opera House of Brussels, La Monnaie (the Mint). Sax commissioned a number of works from Mayeur for the saxophone, which were published by his company and used in his class at the Paris Conservatory.By 1871, Mayeur was also named Saxophone Solo with the Paris Opera, performing in opears and ballets by Halévy, Meyerbeer, Thomas, Saint-Saens, Massenet, Délibes and Paladlihe. It would appear that sometime during this period, his relations with Sax became difficult, culminating in his publications of works by Buffet-Crampon, one of Sax’s rival companies and one of the main protagonists in the series of lawsuits which led to Sax’s bankrupcy. Mayeur’s own declining health lead to his death in 1894.The Grande Fantaisie de Concert sur Rigoletto dates from 1877. The contrasting sections use motifs from arias and duets from Verdi’s opera. Florid cadenzas seperate the various sections, but those passages should be played in the manner of “bel canto†ornamentation, always lyrical and songlike. This is the score and solo part for the orchestral version. Il concerto per pianoforte e orchestra n. 20, KV 466, è una composizione di Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, completata il 10 febbraio1785 a Vienna.Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart finì di comporre il Concerto per pianoforte e orchestra n. 20 in re minore K 466 il 10 febbraio 1785. Il giorno successivo lo eseguì come solista a Vienna in uno dei suoi concerti per abbonamento che, a quel tempo, avevano molto richiamo. Narra la leggenda che Mozart distribuì agli orchestrali le copie appena trascritte dell'ultimo movimento, al momento stesso di andare in scena. Il concerto si svolse nella sala Mehlgrube e vi parteciparono anche il padre Leopold, appositamente venuto da Salisburgo.L'Andante del secondo tempo è una romanza in 2/2 in forma ABACA. Come fa spesso, qui Mozart gioca di contrasti, espliciti e mascherati. Il primo contrasto è con il carattere del movimento che lo ha preceduto. Nell'inizio del secondo movimento il tema è sereno, apparentemente idilliaco e la tonalità solare (Si bemolle maggiore) lo conferma. È il tempo scelto (2/2) che ci fornisce il primo indizio sulle intenzioni dell'autore. A differenza di altri pezzi di grande lirismo il tempo non è un morbido ternario (3/4, 6/8), né un 4/4 con il suo respiro ampio ed il suo alternarsi di battere forti e smussati, ma un marziale 2/2. Il tema principale viene esposto dal solista, ripreso poco dopo dall'orchestra, passa dall'una all'altro con la solita maestria orchestrale mozartiana. Il secondo tema si presenta immediatamente con un salto di ottava ed intervalli ampi si ritrovano in tutto il suo svolgimento. È questo espediente più volte iterato che Mozart usa per costruire tensioni armoniche in crescendo che portano al minore e ad atmosfere già distanti dal primo tema. Con grazia sorprendente Mozart torna quindi sul primo tema per la seconda sezione. La terza sezione tematica precipita in minore, e questa volta con una serie di scale forsennate che richiamano alcuni passaggi dello sviluppo del primo movimento. Gli accordi verticali in forte (bisognerà aspettare Beethoven per i primi fortissimo) marcano di brusche fermate e riprese il rincorrersi delle scale. Un arpeggio rallentato e un arabesco riportano al tema principale che chiude questa pagina in un finto clima di riconciliazione, aprendo al frenetico finale.

A seguire, ho selezionato le arie più celebri e rappresentative delle tre opere, creando una sorta di medley che permette di esplorare le diverse sfumature emotive e drammatiche dei personaggi. L'adattamento delle arie per quartetto di sassofoni ha richiesto una particolare attenzione alle dinamiche e all'equilibrio sonoro, garantendo che ogni strumento potesse esprimere al meglio le qualità vocali e orchestrali. Il contrasto timbrico tra i quattro sassofoni permette di ricreare l'ampia gamma espressiva dell'originale, rispettando le sfumature e le emozioni che caratterizzano ciascuna aria.Una delle principali sfide nell'arrangiamento è stata quella di mantenere la ricchezza e la complessità delle partiture originali di Mozart in una formazione ridotta. Questo è stato ottenuto attraverso una scrittura contrappuntistica attenta e l'uso di tecniche specifiche del sassofono per aggiungere colore e dinamica, come il vibrato e l'uso delle articolazioni.Il risultato è un arrangiamento che, pur nella sua forma cameristica, riesce a rendere omaggio alla grandezza delle opere mozartiane, offrendo una nuova prospettiva su melodie e arie conosciute, adattandole a un ensemble moderno che riesce a trasmetterne l'essenza con freschezza e innovazione.

Alexandriana for percussion ensemble (12 performers) by Dan Heslink The term Alexandriana is popularly used to reference the Great Library of antiquity in Alexandria, Egypt. Rooted in Alexander the Great’s global military and exploratory exploits (334 - 323 BCE), the library symbolizes the ancient Greek ever expanding worldview, especially under the influence of Alexander and his tutor, Aristotle. Alexander died long before construction of the Ancient Museum and Library of Alexandria, but the concept of a universal library was uniquely his. The mixing of Hellenistic columns with Egyptian architecture and the housing of thousands of scrolls in Greek, Turkish, Babylonian, Egyptian and Hebrew, intensify the division of the library broadly into two large sections, one for eastern knowledge and one for western knowledge. In this musical score, typically western is the thematic concept (expressed most clearly in the chimes), the tonal, triadic-based harmony and sectional concept of form. The music’s sectional nature parallels the library’s different rooms, each containing their own genre of knowledge (history, mathematics, poetry, etc.) Evocative of eastern musical practices are the simultaneous layers of different rhythmic subdivisions, oriental modes, and florid lines in the xylophone and vibe parts. In this score, eastern musical procedures are expressed with instruments commonly found in the Western orchestra or wind band. The performers are encouraged to always emphasize the score’s contrasts. Passages for indefinitely pitched percussion featuring the song within the drums contrast with other passages of purely quantitative rhythm. Complexity in the interaction of parts contrast with simple rhythmic unison. Passages of thick harmony contrast with modal monophonic melodies accompanied only by indefinitely pitched sounds. Overall, there is a wide dynamic range. During long passages of gradually accruing energy, take care to not build dynamics too quickly, and during fortissimo passages, drums should be stroked in a manner that avoids excessive aggression. The rhythmic background of 16th notes must be consistent among all players so that interlocking rhythmic motifs are consistent. Often the tom-toms have melodic passages that imitate the shape of mallet or timpani melodies. Tune the drums for a warm, round sound and select mallets accordingly. Bar percussion players should apply a flowing legato to their passage work. Soft sections are intended to sound mysterious: be sure to use mallets that match that character.
