In some of those camps, prisoner musicians had to play classical music to their fellow inmates on the latter's way to death - no return... until the musician had to follow suit. Unlike Nearer my God, to Thee on the Titanic, these musicians were forced to do this. I became so emotionally involved in this arrangement... every sequence has a meaning: the high cries of the women and the children (flügelhorns), the low voices of the concern and physically defeated men (euphonium & french horn), the sirens (french horn), the promise of eternity (euph solo), the tuba (the continuous beat of walking towards one's death) and the perpetual percussion (the clock is ticking...) and the cyclical theme of endless love against all odds, remembering the good times in a dance with your loved one(s). El Malei Rachamim (God full of compassion) is a Jewish prayer for the departed that is recited at funeral services, on visiting the graves of relatives (especially during the holy month of Elul), and after having been called up to the reading of the Torah on the anniversary of the death of a close relative. The prayer originated in the Jewish communities of Western and Eastern Europe and since the end of the Holocaust, the prayer has been adapted as a memorial prayer for the victims of the Holocaust and Nazi persecution. The full text (which has been freely adapted in this piece): O God, Who art full of compassion, who dwellest on high, grant perfect rest in Thy Divine Presence to all the souls of our holy and pure brethren whose blood was spilt by the murderers in Auschwitz, Belzec, Bergen Belsen, Dachau, Majdanek, Sobibor, Treblinka and other extermination camps in Europe; who were killed, strangled, burned and buried alive for the sanctification for Thy Name. For whose souls we now pray. May their resting place be in the Garden of Eden, may the Master of Mercy shelter them in the shadow of His wings for eternity; and may he bind their souls in the Bond of Live. HASHEM is their heritage, and may they repose in peace in their resting places. Now let us say: Amen This setting features of mix of traditional and contemporary composition methods to create a highly emotional and deeply meaningful experience for performer and listener. It was recorded by O’Connor and Wynton Marsalis for the album Liberty!. The recording was also used throughout the film documentary produced for PBS, Liberty! The American Revolution. This may very well be the first duet ever written for trumpet and violin. Summarized as a triumph by album notes writer Thomas Fleming, he goes on to characterize the duet by saying Marsalis’ sound echoes the noble sadness of this celebration of the heroic death of British General James Wolfe before Quebec in 1759. The piece turns into a musical gallop, evoking the surging seesaw battle Wolfe’s army fought outside the walls of the fortress city. We have a collaboration between the trumpet wizardry of Wynton Marsalis and Mark O’Connor’s extraordinary virtuosity on the fiddle. The music is suited for advanced levels.
