Highlands for two violins About the genesis of my work Highlands: There was a composition competition in Scotland (The Gordon Stewart Memorial Competition), they asked to write a short march for Scottish bagpipes. I said to myself: I don't know anything about the bagpipes, this could be an opportunity to get to know the instrument better. So I began to investigate and discovered that there is a huge literature, many works. Of course: all the works are impressively similar, because it is a relatively limited instrument (with forgiveness of the pipers). But this is an unimportant detail for our story. So, with a collection of bagpipe sheet music at hand, I began to investigate the possibilities of the instrument. And I made a huge mistake: Bagpipe scores are written without accidentals, but they are actually in A major. Sharps are not written simply because there is NO alternative. They can't play anything else (at least the traditional bagpipes), so the sheet music ommits the superfluous sharps. In short: then I composed my melody for that contest in A minor ... which is impossible to play on bagpipes. The fact of having written the melody on board a train prevented me from listening to dozens of works for bagpipes as a reference (at that time - June 2015 - I did not have a mobile internet connection). When I realized the mistake (in time) I rewrote that melody in major mode (well, Mixolydian ...), added some typical bagpipe ornamentation and retitled it: Ballone Castle (the name of the castle of the organizers of the contest, the Stewart Society). And now what do I do with the original melody, in minor mode? Instead of throwing it away (which I never do) I titled it Highlands, and it is the work that you are about to hear, or whose score you are holding. I didn't win that contest in Scotland. But I recorded Ballone Castle and posted it on Spotify: Ballone Castle (for bagpipes) - on Spotify (there is a version with drums and another without them). As for Highlands, the saxophone version was recorded by my Chinese friend Yu Han for the album Images of Elsewhere (Images of Elsewhere (saxophone)). In this case, there are also two versions: solo saxophone and sax with electronic sounds. The electronic sounds here actually simulate the typical bagpipe pedal (drone) note. A version of Highands for oboe Solo was recorded by John Winstead (Highlands (oboe solo)) Comparing both pieces (Highlands and Ballone Castle) it is verified how the simple change of mode (major / minor), in addition to the change of instrument, can work wonders for musical perception. They are two related but independent works, each with its own defined character - like two twins. But the story continues. In October 2020 I began an intense dialogue with the violinist Miguel Ãngel Cotignola, from Mendoza (Argentina). I suggested him to film Highlands. He suggestd me to write a second violin part. When Henry Fillmore originally put out the piece, he did in fact publish it with racist depictions of African-American trombonists. However, it is my opinion that the music itself is not racist. After all, it is an instrumental piece. It does not have racist lyrics like minstrel songs do, nor is it published anymore with racist depictions of people. And additionally, American music started with racism. It started with minstrel shows and blackface. That is how American musical culture was formed, and you can find songs with much worse backgrounds than this one that are still performed today. Even the Christmas tune Jingle Bells was originally a minstrel song, and that is still performed. Simply erasing this music won't do anything. That's my opinion. If you disagree, don't play it.

It's a Saturday morning. After a busy and hectic week, you have nothing scheduled. Your wife and kids are happily occupied with things that don't involve you. Time to mentally check out, retreat to the man cave and find something to do that doesn't involve anything other than what is physically in front of you. On the radio in the background, there are some old blokes musing laconically about football. You don't really know what you'll be doing, but it will involve tools and not giving a flip about anything else for a little while. You may even need to make a trip to the hardware store at some stage... who knows? Tooling-a-Round is the first movement of what is (planned to be) a multi-movement work for concert band, depicting the cherished role of backyard shed in the life of a typical suburban middle-aged family man. Quavers are to be played rhythmically swung, with articulations observed whole-heatedly to highlight the playful and irreverent mood throughout - staccato markings in particular are to be exaggerated. The sound of real tools should be used in the percussion parts where indicated (e.g. saw, file, hammer, toolbox, circular saw, power drill etc.) with rhythms to be approximated in order to give the impression of a project getting underway as the piece progresses and the protagonist meanders from one task to the next.This piece is dedicated to busy fathers who work hard to preserve their capacity to create, play and explore.

So then, what have composers been up to for the last 430 years?! I jest, but this piece is terrific. Be advised, the 'runs' are modal, in that the 7th degree is usually NOT just a semitone under the 8th/1st, but a whole tone. A bit like bagpipe music, in our day.

The clefs are not the usual clefs; I tried to take it easy on new students by simply using 4 treble clefs.I don't remember seeing anything like this in a music theory book. This is excellent composition practice as it forces you to fill in missing notes while maintaining 18th century part writing rules. Of course, these part writing rules don't always matter, as not everyone is trying to sound like Mozart, so they can be broken. However, they do tend to lead to very elegant, sophisticated, and unclunky part writing.
