Flute,Piano - Level 5 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1287662 By James Strauss. By Richard Strauss. Arranged by James Strauss. 20th Century,Chamber,Contemporary,Jewish,Sacred. Score and part. 31 pages. James Strauss #878687. Published by James Strauss (A0.1287662). Strauss and the Dance of the Seven VeilsThe Dance of the Seven Veils is a performance by Salome before King Herod Antipas, depicted in modern stage productions, literature, and visual arts. This dance is an elaboration of the New Testament story of the Feast of Herod and the execution of John the Baptist. While the New Testament does not give the dance a name, the title Dance of the Seven Veils originated from the 1893 English translation of Oscar Wilde's French play, Salome, which included the stage direction Salome dances the dance of the seven veils. Richard Strauss also incorporated the dance into his opera Salome in 1905.The concept of Salome's dance involving seven veils can be traced back to Wilde's play, where he was influenced by earlier French writers who portrayed Salome as a symbol of female lust. Wilde envisioned the dance as an act of unveiling, symbolizing the revealing of Salome's true self. He drew inspiration from Gustave Flaubert's story Herodias, in which Salome performs a hand dance to please Antipas. Wilde initially intended to follow Flaubert's version but later changed his approach. The idea of the dance being associated with veils can be linked to the popularity of veil dances during that time, which were westernized interpretations of Middle Eastern dance styles. Notably, the dancer Loïe Fuller was known for her veil dances. Wilde's play did not provide a detailed description of the dance, but it is commonly assumed to involve a series of veils being removed, symbolizing the process of unveiling oneself.Strauss's operatic adaptation of Salome also includes the Dance of the Seven Veils. Although the dance remains unnamed in the music, Salome's sexual fascination with John the Baptist seems to motivate her request, while Herod appears pleased. The visual interpretation of this scene can vary depending on the production, with some emphasizing its eroticism. Strauss specified that the dance should be thoroughly decent, as if it were being done on a prayer mat, but some performances have portrayed it in a more explicit manner.James Strauss's choice to program well-known orchestral pieces for the flute and piano stems from the technical challenges they present, both instrumentally and interpretatively. It allows the flautist to explore different timbres and a romantic style of playing, inspired by Orchestral mass sustained phrases and intense vibrato found in this repertoire. Transcribing orchestral pieces for the flute presents certain difficulties, such as playing loudly and with a full tone in the lower register or producing high notes that gradually fade away. Despite these challenges, the purpose is to challenge the flute's traditional role and explore its expressive capabilities through this repertoire.

Large Ensemble Alto Saxophone,Baritone Saxophone,Bass Guitar,Clarinet,Drums,Flute,Piano,Tenor Saxophone - Level 4 - Digital Download SKU: A0.876447 Composed by Joe Procopio. Dance,Jazz,Pop. Score and parts. 24 pages. JoeCopio Music LLC #53323. Published by JoeCopio Music LLC (A0.876447). LILLY’S DANCE (THE TUMBLER) Back to School 2015 From PAPA’S FAMOUS DANCES by Joe Procopio LILLY’S DANCE (THE TUMBLER) is a delightful Latin flavored dance that was inspired by Little Miss Lilly who could tumble on command all by her big self when she was only 15 months old. When I first saw her dance and tumble at such a young age, I was so moved that I wrote this piece to celebrate her ability to amaze everyone with her dancing and tumbling. LILLY’S DANCE (THE TUMBLER) was originally written and arranged for a small ensemble, band, stage band or combo with flexible instrumentation so that it may be performed with only two Saxophones (Alto Sax I and Alto Sax II) and a standard backup with Piano/Keyboard, Guitar, Bass and Drums. In addition, any combo may be augmented by adding any or all of the parts included for Flute, Clarinet, Tenor Sax, and Baritone Sax. This flexible or variable instrumentation of LILLY’S DANCE (THE TUMBLER) makes it unique and perfect for schools and colleges that do not have a permanent roster of music students entering their music programs annually. It also eases the burden for Directors searching for good music to perform for groups with ever changing numbers of music students. What’s more, LILLY’S DANCE (THE TUMBLER) has a section open for solos to enable the ensemble to feature players who can improvise well enhancing not only the group’s enjoyment but also everyone’s listening pleasure. This piece is composed in the same style of the other dances in the set - all of which have been performed by College and High School students in many major concert events along the East Coast with great success. It is published separately and in a set entitled PAPA’S FAMOUS DANCES PART 1 from the sets PAPA’S FAMOUS DANCES Part I and Part II. Each Part contains 3 Dances. I have adapted the audio here for synthesizer so that it may be previewed. It is one of 6 works named and dedicated to each of my 6 Grandchildren: Lilly, Mary, Lydia, Emma, Joey and Wilson. Instrumentation for LILLY’S DANCE (THE TUMBLER) includes SCORE and parts for: ALTO SAX I ALTO SAX II TENOR SAX BARITONE SAX FLUTE CLARINET PIANO/KEYBOARD - GUITAR - BASS - DRUMS VITA Joe Procopio is a master musician and teacher with proven success for over 50 years. Gustav Holst: Japanese Suite Op.33Mvt.I Ceremonial DanceArranged wind dectet/bass (double wind quintet)2nd oboe plays cor anglaisClarinet parts are in AThe Japanese Suite was written at the request of the dancer Michio Ito, who was working in London in 1915.Most of the principal themes are traditional Japanese tunes, which Ito provided to Holst by whistling them. The lone exception is the “Dance of the Marionette,†which is original to Holst.Despite its origins, there is little that is “Japanese-sounding†about the resulting suite. Rather, Holst set these tunes in the same kinds of harmonies and textures that he was using in his other works, also taking the opportunity to experiment with other influences that were in the air at this time, an openness few of his British contemporaries shared. It is not known if the suite was ever used for Ito’s dance performances, but in September 1919 it did become the first of Holst’s works to be performed at a Promenade Concert, after which it received a handful of performances in the British provinces. The suite consists of six parts including a prelude and an interlude:Prelude: Song of the fishermanCeremonial dance (This arrangement)Dance of the marionettesInterlude: Song of the fishermanDance under the cherry treeFinale: Dance of the wolvesIt is unknown whether Ito did indeed use the music. The first concert performance  was during the Proms of September 1, 1919 under the direction of Holst himself.

Violin Solo - Level 4 - Digital Download SKU: A0.966341 Composed by Martin Bonk. Contemporary,Jazz,World. 2 pages. Martin Bonk #2858375. Published by Martin Bonk (A0.966341). The Elf Suite is a piece for solo violin and consists of a March, Dance, Polka, and Waltz and chronicles what I believe to be the events on the day of an Elvian Ball. The March allows some improvisation in the beginning using ricochet and glissando harmonics to imitate the snoring sounds of the elves and also at the end there is improv as the march devolves into chaos. The music incorporates odd meters and scales. The Dance of the Elves was written for and premiered by Eva Ingolf in 2015 at The Composers' Forum in New York and was the first piece written of the suite and he entire Suite was premiered in Sao Paolo Brazil in 2016 by Stephanie Stasiu Bonk. The entire suite's performance takes about 11 minutes with individual dances 1 1/2 to 3 1/2 minutes in length.

Piano Solo - Level 4 - Digital Download SKU: A0.862667 Composed by Edward MacDowell. Arranged by Michael Bomier. Concert,Halloween,Romantic Period,Standards. Score. 8 pages. Michael Butkus-Bomier #3630325. Published by Michael Butkus-Bomier (A0.862667). Hexantanze of Edward MacDowell is a fine example of American program music, much in the vein of The Sorcerer's Apprentice of Paul Dukas. Augmented chords, chromatic scales, and a lively double-triple meter dance section in the middle. Not all of the piece sounds minor, as there is a major section that uses a half-diminished chord to morph its way back to the minor. Key of B minor. Mostly original notes, some L/R re-assignment, and a few truncated chords and leaps. Our tempo is conservative, but this piece can really fly, no broomstick pun intended... oh, well, ya got me, I DID mean that! Marta Argerich can really launch herself into this one. MBB .

Piano Solo - Level 4 - Digital Download SKU: A0.914175 Composed by R. Nathaniel Dett, Robert Nathaniel Dett. Arranged by Music for a While. 20th Century,Romantic Period. Score. 6 pages. Music for a While #6411603. Published by Music for a While (A0.914175). Dance (Juba) is the fifth piece from Dett’s piano suite In the Bottoms (1913) and was one of his most well known pieces. The work was performed and recorded by Percy Grainger, a fact that was used as marketing on the cover of the 1918 publication by Clayton F. Summy Co., Chicago. About the work, Dett wrote:Juba is a social group-dance that involves stamping on the ground with the foot and following it with two staccato pats of the hands in two-four time. At least one-third of the dancers keep time in this way, while the others dance. Sometimes all will combine together in order to urge on a solo dancer to more frantic (and at the same time more fantastic) endeavours. The band usually consists of a single fiddler perched high on a box or table; who, forgetful of self in the rather hilarious excitement of the hour, does the impossible in the way of double stopping and bowing. A word of warning in regard to the tempo. Do not take it too fast! Much of the dancing in the river bottoms is done with a grace and finish that a Presto tempo never could suggest.R. Nathaniel Dett

E-Flat Clarinet,Piano - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.549561 Composed by Edvard Grieg. Arranged by James M. Guthrie, ASCAP. Concert,Instructional,Romantic Period,Standards,World. Score and part. 16 pages. Jmsgu3 #3508011. Published by jmsgu3 (A0.549561). Duration: ca. 3:20, Score: 10 pages, solo part: 2 pages, piano part: 3 pages. Delicate, not very difficult - suitable for a recital encore. Grieg Background In the first place, Edvard Grieg (1843 –1907) was a Norwegian composer as well as a concert pianist. As a matter of fact, most music historians consider him one of the foremost Romantic era composers. Consequently, his music is part of the international standard classical repertoire. Grieg moreover used Norwegian folk music in his own compositions. Consequently, he ushered Norwegian music to transnational consciousness. Furthermore, he forged a national musical identity for Norway. It is important to realize that he did this in a manner similar to Jean Sibelius in Finland, and Bedřich Smetana in Bohemia. Legacy Grieg is especially celebrated in the city of Bergen. For example, the city has erected numerous statues depicting Grieg. Specifically, the city has named a concert hall (Grieg Hall), a music school (Grieg Academy) and a professional choir (Edvard Grieg Kor) after him. As a matter of fact, there is also a museum located at his former home in Troldhaugen. Peer Gynt Suite No. 1 (Op. 46) Grieg wrote incidental music for the purpose of illustrating a play by Ibsen known as Peer Gynt. The play includes, in particular, the famous selection entitled, In the Hall of the Mountain King. In this composition, Grieg indeed depicts the exploits of the scoundrel, Peer Gynt. In one famous episode, for example, Peer steals a bride at her wedding. For this reason, the people chase him, but soon Peer falls, thereupon striking his skull on a boulder. He wakens forthwith in a highland bounded by angry gnomes. Consequently, the music of In the Hall of the Mountain King represents the mad gnomes taunting Peer. Therefore, each time the theme repeats it gets louder and faster. In the end, Peer surprisingly escapes from the mountain. Holberg Suite and Misc. Summary It must be remembered that Grieg originally wrote his Holberg Suite for the piano. In other words, he only later arranged it for strings. Further, Grieg composed by and large many songs with lyrics by famous writers such as Heine, Goethe, Ibsen, Hans Christian Andersen, Rudyard Kipling, and others. On balance, Norwegian pianist Eva Knardahl recorded altogether Grieg’s whole piano catalog on LP in 1980. These recordings were released again on CD in 2006. In any event, Grieg himself performed and recorded the bulk of these pieces toward the end of his life.Register for free lifetime revisions and updates at www.jamesguthrie.com

A delicate masterpiece, not very difficult - suitable for a recital encore.
