This choral work is sure to add excitement to your concert and it was given splendid reviews when it was first performed at London’s Royal Albert Hall. It was later performed at Croydon’s Fairfield Halls just outside London where it received a rapturous reception from the large audience. The work is ideal for music festivals (for which it was originally written) or any important event which needs a celebratory piece for choir and orchestra. The piece celebrates the endless joy of life and light, as children play on the seashore. The choral parts are not difficult and parts of the soprano could also be sung by children’s chorus if necessary. The words of the soprano solo part have a reflective, maternal quality as she watches the children playing on the shore. Singers are sure to enjoy the catchy melodies, the expressive soprano solo and the dramatic middle section of this work. Parts of the piece use several irregular time signatures. Don’t let them put you off! They are good deal easier than they look and the score contains indicates how they break down into simple units of two and three beats.The choral score contains a piano reduction of the orchestral score. The full orchestral score and parts are available separately from SMP. The orchestration is standard and requires: 2 flutes and piccolo, 2 oboes, 2 clarinets in B flat, 2 bassoons; 4 horns in F, 3 trumpets, 3 trombones, 1 tuba, timpani, percussion (4 players), violin 1, violin 2, viola, cello, double bass. A high-quality audio file containing the orchestral accompaniment is also available.The words are by the distinguished and much-loved Bengali poet Rabindranath Tagore (1861-1941). He made significant contributions to literature and wrote a prodigious number of works including essays, philosophical treatises, journals, memoirs, short stories and letters. The text of this work is taken from two poems in the book entitled Gitanjali. The title is translated as Song Offerings and was largely responsible for Tagore winning the Nobel Prize for Literature. The book contains over one hundred poems, translated freely by the author into English from the original Bengali, published in 1910. The English version appeared in 1912 published by the Indian Society of London. The text has been adapted slightly for this choral setting.Colin Kirkpatrick has published a great deal of music and his publishers include Boosey & Hawkes, Novello, Paxton, Schott, Oxford University Press, Chester and Belwin Mills. His music has been performed and broadcast world-wide.

Text is from The Shewings of Julian of Norwich, Part I LXXXIII lines 3362-3364:  “Thus I saw and understode that our feith is oure light in our night, which light is God, our endless day.†The soundtrack of night sounds changing to dawn reflects the message of hope in Julian’s text. Beginning with the sounds of dusk, the whispered words blend with insect sounds. The modal aleatoric passages create an atmosphere of echoing bells as voices overlap. As night passes into day, the modality changes and the insect night sounds shift to the dawn chorus of birds. Born in about 1343 in Norwich, England, Julian survived the Black Plague as a girl of six. She became an anchoress at St. Julian’s Church in Norwich where she lived in prayerful seclusion. In 1373, she became very sick at age 30. When Julian was near the point of death, a curate showed her a crucifix for comfort. She then experienced a series of intense visions of Christ and recovered from her illness to write eloquently about her “shewings.†Her beautiful Medieval English words reassure us with the hope that our faith in God is our light in times of trouble. This four-movement original work illustrates a prayer by David Dillon, which he used on his own vision quest. The movements use recurring but evolving themes, reflecting each petition of the prayer. A myriad of percussion instruments enhance the mystical quality of the music. The movements are entitled: I. I pray to the West which gives us rest and reflection; II. I pray to the North which gives us patience and purity; III. I pray to the East which gives us energy and emotions; IV. I pray to the South which gives us discipline and direction. Percussion parts include: Shaker (Maraca or Rattle), 2 Small Stones, Ankle Bells, Chime Tree/Mark Tree, Finger Cymbals, Whip Crack (without spring mechanism).

It provides a collection of pieces celebrating the winter season. Unlike our first book, which contains arrangements of traditional carols, this book is based on the rich tradition of secular folk music and songs inspired by the season. We discovered highly evocative folk music imbued with the winter spirit from around the world and had a wonderful time choosing just the right melodies to arrange as solo piano pieces. Amongst them are a Nordic reindeer call; a Joik (a hauntingly beautiful form of song from the Sami people of Lapland); an evocative Scottish winter song and an ancient flute melody celebrating the hardy plum blossom.

For the 2018 Chamber Music Contest Entry Eternal Bridge was made to be performed by a group of six soloists playing the following instruments: Oboe, Harp, Violin, Viola, Cello, Double Bass. It is not a difficult piece once learned. It is really a great fun for the players and very easy listening too, It covers a very wide range of audience demands. There is a groove feeling on it that makes it very pleasant to most all people. Because of its plasticity the piece allows many interpretations, therefore I did not made much use of interpretation symbols in order to leave to the performers the freedom of doing their own. Bowing and fingering are left totally virgin at the hands of the schools or the creativity of the performing Artists. P.S. - The score was written on Finale. The sound file For the 2018 Chamber Music Contest Entry, was performed with samplers from Garritan and conceived as an audio support for the presentation of the score. Imagine a little railway station, a train that comes and stops, and your friends go inside. As you step on the little stairs to go inside, the doors close letting you out, and the train starts rolling. It speeds up very fast and enough so you can`t jump out of the little stairs back to the ground, you are holding now to the iron bars around the doors of the train, you see your friends and the people inside but they can`t see you, they can`t hear you, and you notice that the train is now on a bridge so high, that you can`t see the earth any more. Wind is blowing around me and I feel this cosmic cold and everything starts to twist around in a gigantic spiral. I still feel the Gravity but it goes in all directions at the same time pushing me violently and I feared to fail the grip on the iron bars and fall down, in an imaginary endless abyss. Little by little the speed of the events slows down progressively until everything freezes. Now, The other side of the bridge does not exist at all, neither the beginning or up or down. The train disappeared in a glimpse and I noticed that I was not falling down, just hanging there out in hyperspace, Free from Gravity. I lost the fear of falling in the abyss, it felt kind a good, because the only thing that I could see was light, pure beautiful bright white light, I was floating in light, I realised I could stay there forever, but then I felt lonely and wanted to come back home. Premiered June 6th, 2023 by the Killarney Senior Wind Ensemble and Alumni directed by Meagan Lawson, 'Killarney Carnivale' is a programmatic piece describing a small town carnival in rural Manitoba in the early 1930's, spotlighting the family of the town dentist, Dr. Martin McLaren, his wife Irene, and their six girls. 'Killarney Carnivale' describes a fictitious event, but the family is that of the composer, John Hudson. His mother, (second in a family of six girls), as a young teen in Killarney Manitoba, loved playing piano and aspired to be a concert pianist playing her favourite composers in concert halls. Her dreams took a different turn when the family had to move west for Dr. McLaren's health, but she carried with her the melodies she composed and later played to her own children.Picture John Hudson listening to hours of his mother playing piano as a young boy in the early 1950's, immersed in his mother's beautiful music. After her passing in 2010, he longed to hear these beautiful, playful melodies again. His sister Jane Keyes had become a professional piano player and happily took up the task of recreating several of their mother's pieces, which John, now a retired band director, began to transcribe. Inspired by a photograph of the family that very much looked like a carnival booth style photograph, 'Killarney Carnivale' came to life. It opens as the youngest, probably under age two at the time, wakes up. The scene swiftly changes to arrival at the much - anticipated carnival, with all of its magical sights, sounds and heavenly smells of popcorn and treats. First is the carousel, with wooden horses flying about in endless circles with children regaling with laughter.The next is a sideshow tent featuring the exotic dancer Salome, who wiled King Herod, (and probably more than a few in the audience) as her thin, tantalizing veils hinted at her charms.The next tent is dim and displays the wierd and mysterious curiosities from around the world like bearded ladies, dwarfs and the like.The cakewalk is next, with children vying to be the last person sitting as chairs are removed and the music abruptly stops each time. (This section could host a real cakewalk with a few chairs and willing audience participation. Three chairs is suggested.)Finally, the exhausted family drives home in their antique (to us) automobile with the childrens' hair flying in the breeze.One by one, the excited children fall prey to dreamland, and at long last, the exhausted parents flop into bed too.Honouring his mother's short pieces has been a life long dream of Mr. Hudson, and to hear them played by the Killarney Wind Ensemble and Alumni Band was a poignant moment: the return of these melodies to the little town where they first came to life. Many, many thanks to Meagan Lawson, their director, and all of the members of the Killarney band who so very willingly took up the challenge of playing 'Killarney Carnivale'. Their hard work and dedication to this piece is deeply, deeply appreciated.

Penn’s Landing was written for the 2020 Curtis Young Artist Summer Program's Composer-Performer Collective. The inspiration for this piece comes from a very specific memory that I had in May 2019 of me and a friend visiting an empty Penn’s Landing at night. The skyline of Philadelphia was so vibrant as well as the lights coming from different booths and restaurants that were open. Experiencing Penn’s Landing without any people allowed us to witness the beautiful qualities that night brings in Philadelphia.The beginning of this piece starts with a reflective and peaceful feeling. The piano plays a descending two-note figure that resonates on the second note. It then mirrors itself with similar figures that represent the city lights reflecting on the water. The music transforms into something more lively, playful while still using motifs and figures from the beginning. We then move to darker, slightly slower music when the low register of the piano is introduced. The left-hand plays a dark chorale while the right-hand hits high endless, resonant notes. These feelings of elation, admiration, peacefulness, coldness, melancholia were all emotions that I hoped to evoke.
