Volume 7 - Melodic Aural Tradition of the English Speaking World - Songs 163 - 189

Composed by Traditional/Anonymous. Arranged by Socrates Arvanitakis. 151, Classical, Folk, Traditional. Individual part. 47 pages. Socrates Arvanitakis #752557. Published by Socrates Arvanitakis
This is the seventh volume of an extensive collection of folk songs arranged for the classical guitar mostly in two-part counterpoint. The arrangements are of moderate difficulty and the aims of this publication are to familiarise, entertain and educate guitarists (and other musicians) with a melodic repertoire of lasting aesthetic value, under the light of contrapuntal treatment. The thirty five volumes of this collection can certainly be printed on paper if so desired and there are a few pages in each volume, either blank or with photographs of various musicians, which can be inserted at will in any place for the correct ordering of left and right hand pages so that page turns can be avoided. The principle of avoiding page turns has been maintained in all volumes, but this edition is also designed with mobile electronic devices in mind such as tablets etc, using the environment and facilities of a score reading application, towards a paperless world, at least in music. Therefore the size of the staves is bigger than usual for ease of reading on a small screen but not big enough to exceed the limit of a two-page view. Active internal links for navigating from thematic indexes to particular songs and back to indexes have been added, and also external internet links to sites that give further information for the 945 songs of this first collection for classical guitar.

FINALIST. Variation 3 Arrebato. CONTEMPORARY CATEGORY. XXI COMPETITION FOR PIANO COMPOSITION FIDELIO. Madrid, SpainEach variation represents a scene:Tema / Theme Var. 1 La Tarara y los niñosVar. 2 MonólogoVar. 3 ArrebatoVar. 4 SoledadVar. 5 La Tarara bailaLa Tarara is a song that for generations Spanish children sung in circles. Some specialists point out that its origin would be Sephardic, although the first known versions date back to the 19th century. Collected by Spanish poet Federico GarcÃa-Lorca in 1931, still today it can be heard sung as part of the folk tradition of Spain. The song tells us about a woman (Tarara) who walks through the fields dancing, with add clothing and somewhat strange behavior, most likely crazy. Children would follow her and laugh loudly while playing and dancing. This piano piece presents the theme accompanied by a simple harmonization, followed by 5 variations, each of which uses the theme as material. The first variation (Tarara and the children) watches the scene from outside, while variations 2 to 5 describe the character of La Tarara from inside her own point of view.

Choral Choir (SATB) - Level 2 - Digital Download SKU: A0.821200 Composed by Traditional. Arranged by Gordon Thornett. Folk,World. Octavo. 16 pages. Gordon John Thornett #3018305. Published by Gordon John Thornett (A0.821200). These simple folksong arrangements were made for two community choirs based in Selly Oak, Birmingham, but they would be equally suitable for school choirs or other groups. Included are well known songs from England, Wales, Scotland and Ireland, which are woven into a continuous piece lasting about 6' 45. The medley starts with the English song, ‘Early one morning’, one verse of which re-appears at the end to round things off. The tradition of singing folk songs in schools and in the community has very much faded away in the UK, but the four songs selected for this medley are likely to be well known and loved by many of the older generation! The simple harmonies range from three to four parts (SAB/SATB), with some unison sections as well.

String Orchestra - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.773302 Composed by Traditional. Arranged by Yoel Epstein. Celtic,Christian,Folk,Holiday. Score and parts. 41 pages. Yoel Epstein #3236529. Published by Yoel Epstein (A0.773302). If ever there was a nation with song in its heart, it is the Welsh. These five traditional Celtic folksongs are among the best known and best loved of all folk music. Ar Hyd Y Nos (All Through The Night), first published in 1784 in Edward Jones's anthology of folk songs, Musical and Poetical Relics of the Welsh Bards, became one of the most popular hymns in the English-speaking world. A popular Christmas song, All Through the Night also appears in numerous films and stage productions, beginning with John Gay's opera of 1728 and up to the present day. Calon Lân (a pure heart), a traditional Celtic tune with lyrics later written by Daniel James (Gwyrosydd) in the 1890s, has become the anthem of the Welsh Rugby league. Llwyn Onn (The Ash Grove) was first published in 1892 in The Bardic Museum by harpist Edward Jones. In its English version, with words written by poet Thomas Oliphant, it is traditionally sung in America on Thanksgiving and Christmas. Dafydd y Gareg Wen (David of the White Rock). This song was written by David Owen, a harpist who died about 1720 at the tender age of 29. Tradition says that Owen was lying on his deathbed, and called for his harp. Too weak to hold the harp, he was helped by his wife, who held the harp upright while he played this haunting tune. Rhyfelgyrch Gwyr Harlech (Men of Harlech) describes the seven-year siege of Harlech Castle between 1461 and 1468. Commanded by Constable Dafydd ap Ieuan, the Welsh garrison withstood the longest known siege in the history of the British Isles I hope you enjoy playing this as much as I enjoyed writing it. If you enjoy this, you are welcome to try some of my other arrangements. You can see them at http://www.sheetmusicplus.com/publishers/yoel-epstein-sheet-music/3001988?ac=1. I have also arranged three songs from the Holocaust, which I arranged and distribute for free on IMSLP. You can find them at http://imslp.org/wiki/Category:Ravpapa. If you need arrangements of any of these songs for special combinations of instruments, feel free to contact me at yoelepst@gmail.com, and I will try to accommodate.

Its diversity reflects the small regional and cultural spaces of Switzerland. Influences from other European countries have also shaped this kind of music since the early 19th century. Polka and Mazurka have their roots in Poland, the Scottish in Scotland. The music has been passed on by word of mouth or has been written down in musicians’ notebooks.Between 1940 and 1960, the ethnomusicologist Hanny Christen travelled through Switzerland and collected thousands of melodies from the period between 1800 and 1960. The musicians played or sang in front of her. Some permitted her to write off their own hand-written dance booklets in full. In 1956, Hanny Christen began to record this music with a tape recorder. It is thanks to her that over 12,000 instrumental dance movements of Switzerland and many other pieces of tradition (costumes, biographies, musical instruments etc.) were saved from being forgotten. The instruments used in traditional folk music vary depending on the type of dance and region. Flutes are more or less non-existent. The author would like to fill a gap with this publication. She has therefore adapted one folk dance per canton from the Hanny Christen-collection* for two flutes. The pieces from the cantons of Basel City, Thurgau and Geneva do not come from this source, though. The melodies from the other 23 cantons are taken unchanged from the collection. The second voice was not always composed quite traditional. The melody follows - if possible - a contrapuntal melody of its own and is directed to the flute (difficulty grade 3 +).The editor, Helene Schulthess, is a flutist with a wide repertoire. She lives in Switzerland. She performs as a soloist, makes chamber music and is active as a music teacher. She is involved in various musical projects (www.helene-schulthess.ch).* Swiss Folk Music Collection. The dance music of Switzerland of the 19th and first half of the 20th century. You can purchase all 26 folkdances for 30 $ under this link: https://www.sheetmusicplus.com/title/26-swiss-folk-dances-for-2-flutes-and-accompaniment-digital-sheet-music/21673528The document contents 26 folk dances for two flutes (49 pages) and a score (52 pages)Swiss folk music is very lively. Score. 8 pages. Helene Schulthess #782677. Published by Helene Schulthess (A0.1182923).
