The main idea of this work is to continue the work of decades of study on Latin American music and highlight its diverse range of rhythms and musical colors in a work for solo cello that covers all this diversity as representatively as possible. The work does not intend to be literal in the approach of each rhythm and is compiled in six chapters of the many existing rhythms in the region, even because it is perhaps almost impossible to catalog all of its totality, but it tries to represent this diversity represented by the solo violoncello. Each Partita has three movements and each one has been named after an ecosystem in Latin America, in order to be able to group THE RHYTHMS APPROACHED by region, these being PAMPA, CAATINGA, ANDES, AMAZON FOREST, CARIBBEAN, and CHAPARRAL.

Around the Cauldron was inspired by the three witches from Shakespeare’s play Macbeth. With a nod to multi-movement pieces such as Schumann's Scenes From Childhood and Mussorgsky's Pictures At An Exhibition, Around the Cauldron is comprised of seven short scenes, each of which evokes a mood that resonates with an image of three witches gathered around a cauldron in a dark forest, muttering spells, and adding selected creatures to a bubbling stew. The movements carry individual titles: In Dusk, Pounce, Transmutation, Boiling, Witches Waltz, Newts’ Lament, and Sacrificial. Most of the melodies in the piece were tailored to fit lines from the original Shakespearean text and were also arranged as songs for a production of Macbeth at Ramapo College of New Jersey. Thus, the main theme sets the play’s immortal opening words: Fair is foul and foul is fair / Hover through the fog and filthy air. Honoring the three witches, the piece reflects the number three in its rhythms, which highlight groups of three beats; in its themes, which are constructed of three phrases; and in its instrumentation, which suggests that each instrument represents a different witch. Around the Cauldron was commissioned by Concert Artists Guild with support from the Adele and John Gray Endowment Fund for Lysander Piano Trio, which is fittingly named after another Shakespearean character.

One of that set was called Entry, which I have arranged for Instrumental Trio. In keeping with the characteristics of the Romantic period my arrangement is full of contrasts and constant shifts between dynamics, articulations, tempos, and themes. Each part is of equal importance and each part independently adds to the stunning polyphonic weaving. Requires careful counting and close attention to rhythms, but sounds quite advanced and dramatic when all details are observed. This piece is both playful and majestic at the same time. One of that set was called Entry, which I have arranged for Instrumental Trio. In keeping with the characteristics of the Romantic period my arrangement is full of contrasts and constant shifts between dynamics, articulations, tempos, and themes. Each part is of equal importance and each part independently adds to the stunning polyphonic weaving. Requires careful counting and close attention to rhythms, but sounds quite advanced and dramatic when all details are observed. This piece is both playful and majestic at the same time. Since the piece is practically a sacred text, no notes have been changed. Period. What HAS been changed is the presentation, especially in the 2nd movement, which is also our audio sample here. The small note-values, the radical time signatures, the measures that often take up an ENTIRE line of commercially-printed music, and the decided lack of cautionary accidentals: all these elements have been pre-decoded, essentially. No more using a hand-lens to see if that mark is a slur or a tie, or both! No more straining to see what note is held over, while the new one strikes. Our setting here, which you can see in the sample, often takes each BEAT, and puts a barline there, along with a common time signature, 3/4, 6/8, 4/4, etc. No smaller fractions, and no vast forest of dots and flags. All the 2nd movement rhythms have been arithmetically expanded, while maintaining their relationships. All the ornamentation, with its hidden melody, has been written out.So, while this piece has not been made any easier to play, it HAS been made vastly easier to read. One might claim that it is now readable at all, whilst the original cannot be deciphered at sight without great mental and visual effort. Please, print this double-sided for best results, as the repeats are either on a single page, or are on facing pages in our formatting. Single-sided gives you that same control, if you wish.
