Strong ForcesThe work is inspired by the four fundamental forces of nature. These forces explain any phenomena which can be produced in the universe.Throughout all composition, it is latent the mathematic construction based in the series Fibonacci. In the first of the movements, Fibonacci's series is present in the notes' sequence that forms the series of 16 sounds and it is going to be present throughout the whole work. This series is taking form along the movement and it is getting melody and harmony.Although it is far away from the sonata form, as we know it in its period of highest glory, it takes elements of it and updates to our days. In this movement, we can find sonata form elements as the exposition, development, transitions or coda.The central part of the first movement becomes in the slow movement, being more intimate and lyrical, free of the serials ties although it uses resources before cited -now called common practice-.The movement finish with a short re-exposition that concludes with the virtuosic of the soloist doubling the series and adding more tension until conforming the series in its full whole.II. Weak ForcesIt is the most tribal of both movements. Its structure is more complex and in it, we also can find clear reminiscences to the sonata form.We can divide the movement into two big blocks. The first one is formed for the introduction and sections one and two.IntroducciónIt is based in one ostinato of three notes where the accent is changing provoking unsymmetric, this ostinato represents the nucleus of our existence. The piccolo and the trombone introduce us to the human element representing the two elements that form the development of the whole movement.The two elements of thematics are taken from the series, the first one is easily recognizable because it appears in his primary form.First section & cadenzaIn this movement, the rhythm, the melody, and the harmony are based on the sequence of Fibonacci. As the theme ostinato of the soloist as the melody is formed under the rhythm of 1, 2, 3 and 5. This section leads us to the second section with a clear mode of cadence. In the cadenza, the elements of the rhythm are varied freely with an accompaniment of the Spring Drum.DevelopmentIt is formed by two Rondo sub-sections in which the solo part has been created through the mirror technique.Both sections have the next form:Intro-A-B-A-B-(B(minor)+A)Intro-A-B-A-B-(B(major)+A)First section & CodaThe movement ends with the repetition of the first section and the final code.

J. Ricketts (1881 - 1945) a British Army bandmaster who later became the director of music for the Royal Marines at Plymouth. Since service personnel were, at that time, not encouraged to have professional lives outside the armed forces, F. J. Ricketts published his compositions under the pseudonym Kenneth Alford. Supposedly, the tune was inspired by a British military officer who preferred to whistle a descending minor third rather than shout Fore! when playing golf. It is this descending interval that begins each line of the melody. English composer Malcolm Arnold added a counter-march, which he titled 'The River Kwai March' for the 1957 film 'The Bridge on the River Kwai'. On account of the movie the 'Colonel Bogey March' is often incorrectly credited as the 'River Kwai March'.

This, the trombone octet adaptation of my trombone quartet arrangement of Hector Berlioz’ Symphonie Fantastique, again features all the well-known themes of the full orchestral symphony. The beginning is identical with the original, but then proceeds immediately to the March to the Scaffold of the fourth movement. The famous idée fixe of the symphony is first heard at measure 72, and this is followed by other themes from the first movement. The adagio at measure 164 re-creates the pastoral duet of the symphony’s third movement. As indicated on the charts, the first trombone (alto) should play this section offstage (as for the oboist in the original), while the others remain on stage. If this is not possible, then the first trombone should play this section muted. This very reflective interlude is followed by my personal favorite, the wondrously jolly waltz from the symphony’s second movement. The Witches’ Round Dance, a sort of fugue, comes next, and leads to the dies irae – played in four octaves here, but in this octet version heard together with the Witches’ Round Dance. The idée fixe is stated once again before the arrangement concludes in the same way as the original symphony.This is a light-hearted arrangement that is not intended to re-create exactly the grandeur of the original with its huge orchestral forces. Lasting nearly 9 min, depending on how fast you take some sections, this piece will require some stamina, but with many sections arranged for two, three or four trombones, every player does get a break. The first part requires a very capable alto trombonist with a good high register.Player 1 plays alto throughout, player 2 switches between alto and tenor, and parts 7 and 8 are for bass trombone.Sensible page turns were impossible to incorporate in some of the parts while at the same time not exceeding four pages. So in those parts the players are instructed – during longer breaks – to fetch the next page in good time, which is easily possible if the parts are printed out on separate sheets. Players using tablets won’t have any problems, of course.

The première of Daudet's play, L'Arlésienne, with incidental music by Bizet, given at the Théâtre du Vaudeville on 30 September 1872, was a devastating event for both playwright and composer and the production was removed from the repertory after 19 performances. The critic Johannès Weber, however, was alert to the quality of Bizet's score and suggested that the composer should excerpt and rescore several pieces for the Concerts populaires where 'the lovely music would be better appreciated than at the Vaudeville'. Bizet must have moved rather quickly to follow Weber's suggestion, for the première of the first Arlésienne suite took place only six weeks later at the Concerts populaires on 10 November 1872 and the work in its new abridged form was soon taken up by many other orchestras. Bizet, however, did not turn to preparing a second suite from L'Arlésienne. Some four years after Bizet's death, the success of the first suite may have prompted his original publisher to commission the arrangement of more excerpts from the Arlésienne MS from Bizet's good friend Ernest Guiraud who had earlier written recitatives and put together a ballet for Carmen.In 1872 Bizet wrote the incidental music to Daudet’s famous tragedy ‘L’Arlésienne’. He had to tailor his composition to an orchestra of only 26 players, but these limited forces turned out to pose a stimulating challenge rather than an obstacle. Shortly after the premiere, he arranged four of the movements and formed them into the Suite No. 1 for large orchestra. The Suite No. 2 was arranged by Ernest Guiraud four years after Bizet’s death.

The texts for this work were selected by the composer, and they represent three different time periods, the 17th, 19th and early 20th centuries, to show that writers have long been fascinated by the seasons and by the distinct weather conditions that each season brings. Although certain types of weather, such as wind or rain, may occur in any of the seasons, the descriptions of weather in these four poems present specific weather conditions which commonly occur in each of the four seasons: a still, hot, sultry day interrupted by the movement of a light breeze from the hills (summer); the cooling morning mists and light frost which signal the coming of winter (autumn); the bitter iciness of fierce winds and frozen air-in this poem, further compared with man's ingratitude (winter); the warm rains and southerly winds that melt the ice and bring about new life (spring). Throughout this piece various musical devices are employed to underscore or even interpret the words. These devices include text painting, contrapuntal structures (double canon and fugue), and dramatically shifting harmonic colors as each season unfolds. The score prints on legal size paper and the parts on letter. I. From the Faraway Nearby The highly charged contrast of closely viewed foreground details and hugely distant horizons, which typified the New Mexican Views of O'Keeffe, was not a mere optical illusion. The large scale, bright light, and clear air of the region permitted one to see for the proverbial forever, and the juxtaposition of faraway and nearby was an integral aspect of desert vision. Soft dynamics and orchestration represent the faraway while the loud dynamics and orchestration represent the nearby. Near the end, the faraway and nearby begin to merge. II. Jimson Weed, White Flower No. 1 This painting depicts one of O'Keeffe's favorite subjects: a magnified flower. To her, the delicate blooms stood as some of the most overlooked pieces of naturally occurring beauty, objects that the bustling contemporary world ignored. So she made it her mission to highlight their complex structures, explaining: When you take a flower in your hand and really look at it, it's your world for the moment. I want to give that world to someone else. Most people in the city rush around so, they have no time to look at a flower. I want them to see it whether they want to or not. This movement is slow and lyrical reflecting the beauty of the close-up image. III. Red Hills and Bone O'Keeffe 's most effective composition of bones in the landscape appeared in 1941, with Red Hills and Bone; the large canvas is also among her most ambitions evocations of the arid country of which she was by then an owner, having purchase the house at Ghost Ranch the preceding year. In 1939, O'Keeffe had written of the bones as strangely more living than the animals walking around, and in the 1941 painting her response is given visual from. The minimalistic noodling represents the red hills and the bold triplets represent the mystique of the bone. IV. Ladder to the Moon This painting shows a handmade wooden ladder suspended in the turquoise sky. In the background are the pitch-black Pedernal Mountains and a pearl colored half moon. This painting was very similar to a picture taken of O'Keeffe and her surroundings at Ghost Ranch. In the picture, a large wooden ladder is leaned against an outer wall of a patio from where it rises up into the sky with the Pedernal Mountains in the background. In Pueblo culture the ladder is used to symbolize the link between the Pueblos and cosmic forces. The fact that the ladder is pointed up in the sky may represent the link between nature and the cosmos. While there are motifs that depict specifics of the painting, such as the scale-wise ascending and descending figure for the crescent mood and rising arpeggios for the ladder, the focus of this movement is the spiritual element. The music rises and grows in intensity from a ground bass-like theme to a soaring ending.

My quartets composed between 1997 and 2005 were conceived as an interconnected, self-contained cycle of works ranging from the (in my opinion) quasi revolutionary Quartet No. 1 to the Quartet No. 5 entitled Versuch über die Fuge [Attempt at a Fugue]. The Quartet No. 6 – Study on Beethoven – composed fourteen years after No. 5 should be conceived as a new approach and the commencement of a new quartet cycle with an unknown ending. All that can be said is that the subsequent quartets will be devoted to an intense study of Ludwig van Beethoven’s unique and consummate artistry of quartet composition. Despite a reverence for Beethoven at a very early stage, my own compositions have steered well clear of this unapproachable cosmos with the exception of my concert overture Con brio. The perhaps only link with the five quartets of the first cycle of quartets is the single-movement structure of the thirty-minute Quartet No. 6. The fundamental coordinates have otherwise been reset to zero. This is therefore also a ‘study’ in a literal sense. In the Quartet No. 6, I set out with a state of tonality displaying significant extensions whose centrifugal forces are barely containable. My focus is the detection of the inherent gravitation of tonality, including phenomenons such as tension/relaxation, suspension/resolution and fixation/deviation. From a formal aspect, the work is too experimental and unsentimental for explorations in a nostalgic-romantic sense. On the contrary, tonality or at least its fundamental assumptions are initially set down in the sense of a study or test assembly in order to permit subsequent experimentation, variation and the formulation of exceptions with the desire and firm conviction that it is possible to express something innovative and never previously heard with this seemingly exhausted fundamental material. I have been repeatedly astonished by the unfolding in the progression of this piece which has taken me to unknown locations, especially from a formal aspect. I am fascinated to see what forms the subsequent quartets in this ‘Beethoven study’ cycle will lead me to. The Quartet No. 6 has been created in close artistic and friendly cooperation with Anne-Sophie Mutter and she is the dedicatee of this work. History of the United States Navy and the Navy HymnOn August 26, 1775, the General Assembly of Rhode Island passed a resolution to create the Continental Fleet, to be funded by the Continental Congress in Philadelphia. But on October 3, 1775, Congress rejected it. On October 13, 1775, the Continental Congress changed courses and established the Continental Navy. This was the birth of the United States Navy. The Continental Navy obtained and armed two civilian vessels, the Andrew Doria and the Cabot. The first United States Navy ship was the USS Alfred, which was commissioned by Captain Dudley Saltonstall on December 3, 1775. John Adams served as the first Chairman of the Naval Committee, but in 1776 the Continental Congress appointed Commodore Esek Hopkins to be the Navy’s first Commander. After the Revolutionary War, the government abolished the Continental Navy. But 11 years later, Congress passed the Naval Act of 1794, which created the United States Navy. The Navy was involved in the Revolutionary War (1775 – 1776), the War of 1812 (1812 – 1815), the Civil World (1861 – 1865), the Mexican-American War (1846 – 1848), the Spanish-American War (1898), World War I (1914 – 1918), World War II (1939 – 1945), the Korean conflict, the Vietnam conflict (1964 – 1975), the war on terrorism through various military operations around the world (1987 – 2021) ), Operation Earnest Will (1987 – 1988), Operation Praying Mantis in the Persian Gulf (1988), Operation Urgent Fury at the invasion of Grenada (1983), Operation Desert Shield (1990 – 1991) and Operation Desert Storm (1991) which comprised the Gulf War, Operation Deliberate Force which was the invasion of Bosnia and Herzegovina (1995), Operation Allied Force which was the attack on Yugoslavia (1999), Operation Desert Fox which was the bombing of Iraq (1998), Operation Southern Watch which was the aerial patrolling of Iraq (1992 – 2003), Operation Enduring Freedom at the invasion of Afghanistan (2001 – 2021), and Operation Iraqi Freedom at the invasion of Iraq (2003 – 2011). The Navy emerged from World War II as the most powerful Navy in the world.In 1860, William Whiting of Winchester, England, wrote a poem titled “Eternal Father, Strong to Save” for one of his students, who was preparing to sail for the United States. The poem alludes to Psalm 107 and is a prayer for God’s protection from seafaring danger. In 1861, Rev. John Bacchus Dykes, an Anglican clergyman, composed the tune “Melita,” in 88 88 88 iambic meter, to accompany the hymn. “Melita” is the archaic name of Malta, which is an ancient seafaring nation. It was the site of the shipwreck that involved the Apostle Paul, as described in the Acts of the Apostles, chapters 27–28. In 1814, Malta became the Crown Colony of the United Kingdom, but in 1964 it gained independence and joined the British Commonwealth. The hymn has long been used by Navy and civilian chaplains during chapel services at sea, in navy and civilian maritime contexts. The Royal Navy, navies of the British Commonwealth, and the United States Navy adopted the hymn in the late 19th century as “The Navy Hymn.” Many verses have been written to Melita. James F. Linzey selected the four verses by Whiting (verses 1-3) and Hamilton (verse 4), which are the verses traditionally used in the Armed Forces Hymnal. James Linzey is the General Editor of the New Tyndale Version (NTV) Bible translation.
